Instant Barbecues are widely available at the moment, however they vary in price from store to store, i.e Tesco sell there's at 2 for £5, but Wilko's sell theres for just 2 for £3, and it is the exact same barbecue as Tesco just with a different cover on them.
We bought a couple of these for our camping trip at the weekend just in case we wanted a barbecue and I was surprised to say the least of how good they actually were.
When you open these they have a mesh rack over the top of them with a piece of paper covered in a flamable source and then coals in the bottom of the metal tray, you must ensure all packaging is removed before using the actual berbecue.
When you set the paper alight, it doesn't take too long to disappear and heat up the babecue, what surprised me was the actual amount of coals that are in there for such a good price. It takes around 20 minutes for the flames to stop and the coals to have turned white and for it to be ready to use.
Its quite amazing actually how much you can cook on one of these at any one time, we managed to fit on two quarter pound burgers, four sausages and three kebabs on there still leaving a little room to be able to turn thorughout cooking.
When the coals are as hot as they can be it doesn't take long at all to cook, a amximum of 15 minutes to cook all items on there and when you put a next load on, these cook even quicker as it is gradually getting hotter and hotter. YOu could cook on one of these for at least an hour or so easy, and then it is good to use to keep you warm if it starts to go cold.
I was also surprised by the taste of the food after, it can only be described as berbecued however was extremely tasty, as some disposable barbecue's are no good, and the food after it is cooked is not very nice or inedible.
I would definitely recommend these from Wilko's, sometimes it works out cheaper than actually investing in a proper barbecue and coals every year, but I think having a decent barbecue is a status thing especially when entertaining.... its a man thing, who has the best BBQ and I don't think the disposable one would go down from a visible point of view, however from a cooking aspect it could give an expensive one a run for its money.

- 23/08/09 I have often wondered what these are like and how well they cook, since my full sized BBQ was left outside unprotected last Winter and got ruined! Thanks for the info. |

- 30/06/09 Sounds a bit of a bargain but I wouldn't buy these. If you can't get them lit properly it is a real pain getting the grill off to 'play' with the coals below. Nice review though. |
