Bratislavsky Mestiansky Pivovar
by fizzywizzy When it comes to beer, the Czechs are quite rightly proud of their brews which are sold and enjoyed all over the world; brands such as Pilsener Urquell and Staropramen are not unusual or exotic, they can be found in pubs and bars (and supermarkets) across Europe and beyond. You would be forgiven for thinking that the Slovaks don't share ... this brewing tradition but nothing is further from the truth; Slovakia may not have any of the really big international brands but there are lots of smaller domestic brands and, better still, loads of good microbreweries. Some tour agencies offer trips to the large brewery just out of town, but if it's the local microbreweries you want to visit, you need to get yourself a city plan and get researching. There are a few places around the city, but my favourites are the Bratislavsky Mestiansky Pivovar - for surroundings and location - and Richtar Jakub (which I'll review in the future) - for atmosphere and the beer. The two are quite different: the former is quite touristy, though enjoyable, while the latter is off the beaten track and frequented more by young people who appreciate the good choice of beers and prices that are slightly lower than in the very centre of the city. Bratislavsky Mestiansky Pivovar translates roughly as the Bratislava City Brewery; on the website it's described as the 'Burgher' brewery but city brewery is a closer approximation for modern English. Although these are new premises and new owners, this beer hall, restaurant and microbrewery on Drevena, just off Bratislava's main shopping street, Obchodna, echoes the long tradition within the city and numerous old photographs and drawings hanging on the walls act as a reminder of this heritage. Although it's fairly new, there's a comfortable ambience at the Mestiansky Pivovar and this, in combination with a restrained use of traditional architectural features, makes it feel traditional, though it's a tad more comfortable and stylish than your average beer hall. This may come from the fact that the food gets equal billing with the beer and the two times I've visited, I've noticed that at least half the customers have been dining. I haven't eaten a full meal here myself but I can say that the food looks good - generous portions of traditional Slovakian/central European fare in the form of hearty main courses and the sort of snacks that go well with a beer. There are no designated areas for eating but it's quite obvious when you go in that some areas are more suited to dining, and some to drinking; on the ground floor there are a couple of small areas separated from the main area by walls of frosted glass which give the idea of a private dining area so they'd be good for groups. In the main area on this floor there are higher tables of the kind you'd rest a drink on if you were standing, or you can sit at the bar. The upper floor is also mixed in this way. You can expect that after a certain time in the evening, or from lunch time at weekends when the stag parties are in town, the place is busier and noisier though since these customers are used to standing to drink, you still stand a chance of getting a table. If you are particularly keen to eat at Mestiansky Pivovar you can make a reservation. Service is at table and the place is always well staffed so service is prompt. All the staff can speak English so if your Slovakian is patchy (like mine) or none existent, you'll get by. The Mestiansky beer is brewed on the premises. There's a light and a dark. The light is a decent unfiltered lager type beer, superior to your big mass produced lagers and pleasant drinking, if not remarkable. At the time of writing (April 2013) it;s priced at Euro1.20, Euro1.90 and Euro3.80 for 300ml, 500ml and one litre respectively. I'm not a particular lover of dark beers but my travelling companion tried it and I felt it wrong not to at least give it a try. This is a richly flavoured beer with a pronounced coffee flavour. The dark is served in 400ml only, priced at Euro1.70. Erdinger Weissbier is also available as well as an alcohol free beer, though personally I'd rather drink a 'proper' soft drink. If you want to try some of the other alcoholic specialities such as the fruit brandies there is a full range including ones made from pear, plum and apricot. It's traditional to have a 'beer snack' as you drink and this place offers a good range for the not so squeamish drinker. We had the pickled sausage with chilli peppers (Euro3.50 for 80g) which was really good: strongly flavoured it was the perfect snack to have with the light beer. For next time I've got my eye on the 'Bratislavské susi' - Bratislava sushi - which is pickled fish fillets with apples and spring onion in cream (Euro3.50). For a lighter lunch soup will set you back between Euro3-4 while a bigger plate of pork with red cabbage and potatoes will cost you a shade over Euro7. Meaty mains go up to about Euro14. There are a couple of fish dishes but those who eat no meat at all will be restricted to salads and some sides (be aware though that fried pork fat is a common garnish). Visitors in Bratislava during the summer may prefer to visit the second branch of the Mestiansky Pivovar on Dunajska heading east out of town, because it has a large summer terrace. In summer a limited amount of seating is available in the city branch on Drevena. Mestiansky Pivovar is not my favourite Bratislava beer hall - for me it's just a little too large - but the beer is a nice change from the ubiquitous Pilsener Urquell and if you can't get further out of the centre it is your best bet for a decent pint (or European equivalent). Both branches are open daily. The opening hours of the Drevena branch can be seen here http://www.mestianskypivovar.sk/en/contact Read the complete review |

Cegielnia (Wroclaw, Poland)
by loulou22 **Cegielnia, Wroclaw, Poland.** During a recent trip to Wroclaw we stopped off for some lunch in a small restaurant/pub called Cegielnia. Cegielnia is located on ul. Wiezienna 21 and is located about halfway along the street in amongst a few other cafes and restaurants. We chose this restaurant in particular as my partner ... had been here before and assured me it was good. The restaurant is located about a 10 minute walk from the main market square in Wroclaw and is very close to a couple of the city's universities and student areas. **Have Some Lunch** As we entered Cegielnia my eyes were immediately drawn towards the ceiling where there were lots of wooden spoons and other wooden kitchen utensils hanging above the tables. After this I noticed that the restaurant seemed rather full and began scanning the room for a table, I spotted one in the corner near the front window and headed towards it. Once seated I noticed that literally everything in the restaurant was wooden, wooden seats, benches and stools, wooden tables and of course the wooden hanging utensils. I really liked this effect and I liked that the wooden furniture was a nice chunky wood and quite dark so it felt secure and looked great. There is also an outdoor seating area at the front of the restaurant, but this was full at the time of our visit. After admiring the decor my stomach reminded me of the real reason I was here and I took a look at the menu. The menu turned out to be entirely in Polish, so not very good for tourists who don't speak Polish, thankfully though my partner does so I had a translator! The menu offers a variety of "small" meals in the form of salads, sandwiches, pizza and Panini's to name just a few. I chose to have a Panini with cheese and chicken at a price of 11.50zl (Polish Zloty) and my partner went for a seafood salad at a price of 18.90zl. The current exchange rate is around 4.9zl for every £1. There is a drinks section on the menu with the usual teas, coffees, beers, wines, smoothies and soft drinks but as we both had bottles of coke in our bags we decided not to bother ordering a drink with our meals. The prices were reasonable though at an average of around 8zl depending on what drink you had. We had to place our order at the bar and then our food was brought to us at the table. It took around 15 to 20 minutes for the food to arrive, I know this as I was quite hungry and it felt like forever! When the food did arrive my panini was presented to me on a plate with cutlery wrapped in a napkin and it looked nice and tasty. My partners salad was served in a decent sized bowl and apparently was also very tasty. The panini itself was larger than I had expected and I didn't quite manage to finish it all. It was cooked lovely, the outside was a nice golden brown and not too hard to bite into. As soon as I bit into it I felt the hot cheese oozing out of the panini and had to do an emergency napkin dive to save myself from missing my mouth! As I ate my way through the panini I came to the pieces of chicken which were also cooked really nice, not too dry and tasted fantastic with the melted cheese. The whole panini really was melt in the mouth and very filling! After finishing our meals we simply left the restaurant as we had paid for the meals when they were ordered at the bar. We had very little contact with the staff here other than ordering our meal and having it served to us, but the little contact we did have was pleasant, polite and friendly. **Toilets** The toilets in Cegielnia are pretty much standard toilets, they are located towards the rear of the restaurant and at the time of our visit they were clean and stocked up with the necessities. **Wheelchair and Pushchair Access?** There are a few steps leading up to the outdoor seating area and the entrance of Cegielnia, because of this I would say it isn't suitable for wheelchair users or pushchairs and I couldn't see any ramps anywhere to avoid the steps. ** Overall ** Overall, I really enjoyed my meal here, I am getting hungry thinking about it now and I wish I could make Panini's as good as these! I definitely recommend this restaurant and I would 110% definitely visit here again if I am ever in Wroclaw. Thanks for reading :) Read the complete review |

Fiesta Snack Bar and Grill (Cyprus)
by lak11 ~~~~~~~~THE NIGHT IS YOUNG~~~~~~~~ On our last holiday to Cyprus myself and my husband stayed, for the second time, in The Louis Imperial Beach Hotel which is situated on Poseidonos Avenue in the Paphos area of the island. My brother and his wife booked their holidays after we did and they stayed at a hotel near to ours, ... just a few minutes away, and also on Poseidonos Avenue. We were all staying on an all-inclusive basis, and so, apart from having a fairly light meal here once, when we had been out for most of the day, we mainly tended to eat at our own hotels and then have a late night drink at The Fiesta Bar. We met at this bar on several evenings and enjoyed a drink or two together. It was a convenient place to meet up, being almost half way between hotels, although slightly nearer to ours. But we didn't only go here because of the distance; it was an ideal place to have a late drink being lively after midnight and we could choose to sit outside or in. Our choice was always to sit outside. were told that this bar stayed open until the last guests left. MENU Food was being served here even in the small hours of the morning and certainly looked good. We were nosey and couldn't help but have a good look as the meals passed by on a waiter's tray. Decent sized portions were in evidence as they were taken to various tables. Mostly we had already eaten dinner at our hotels but the aromas wafting around were certainly tempting. When we were here just for drinks we requested peanuts and other nibbles. The menu is extensive and I feel has something for even the fussy eater. I don't consider myself to be particularly fussy but as I don't eat meat it isn't uncommon for there to be little choice when eating out. I felt that The Fiesta Snack Bar & Grill offered several options that seemed most appetising. An idea of the menu and prices is as follows: Avocado & prawn salad Euro9.95 Greek salad Euro7.95 Mousaka (served with chips) Euro9.95 Kleftiko Flavoured lamb cooked in a clay oven) Euro10.95 Jack Daniels Steak (Irish beef fillet topped in Jack Daniels sauce) Euro20.50 Garlic Sauce (steak served with a creamy garlic cognac and white wine sauce) Euro20.50 Chefs specials include chicken curry, pork in pepper sauce, lamb chops and much more these are all served with chips and cost less than Euro14.00. Plenty of sea food choices too were on the menu, including: Battered cod Euro9.95 Battered king prawns Euro15.95 Grilled trout Euro15.50 A good selection of burgers were included; these sounded (and looked) tempting. Pasta dishes such as spaghetti Bolognese and seafood penne were on offer. And for those requiring a lighter option, toasted sandwiches with a good choice of fillings were also available. VEGETARIAN OPTIONS I thought the vegetarian options were good here. As well as the choices in the vegetarian section of the menu, which I considered impressive, there were meat-free pasta dishes, sandwiches and salads that certainly made me feel spoilt for choice. A few options were: Vegetarian mousaka Euro9.95 Vegetarian platter (aubergines, courgettes, mush rooms, spring rolls, rice stuffed vine leaves) Euro9.95 Vegetarian Burger Euro7.25 In addition to these were spring rolls, and stuffed pancakes For our meal at The Fiesta Bar three chose burgers (served with chips) and I chose a toasted tuna mayonnaise sandwich. The food came to less than thirty euros but with about three to four drinks each the bill was around eighty euros. We all enjoyed our meal. DRINKS Our drinks here in the evening were mainly vodka with a lemonade mixer, southern comfort with ginger ale, local beer (Keo) and whisky and whisky with coke as a mixer. We thought the bar was very well equipped with both local and international brands of beer and spirits available. The Fiesta serves Belgian beer. ATMOSPHERE Apart from when we ate here we mainly appeared after midnight. By this time our hotels were quietening down but, for us, the night was still young. A short walk to this bar and we found it was still buzzing. The age range was mixed. There were some young families with children (mainly asleep in their buggies) and a few groups and couple of all ages. The weather was humid still but much cooler than it had been in the heat of the day. It felt wonderful to be seated outside and enjoying a refreshing drink and sometimes a slight breeze, while the music played and people chatted amiably around us. We were on holiday and were enjoying every minute. We left late, once or twice after two- thirty in the morning but we still weren't the last to leave. Guests remained chatting and drinking as we said goodnight. I thought the atmosphere was cheery and fun which I think is usual in most tourist areas of Paphos, which I believe generally feel relaxed, it being mainly a family resort. FAMILY FRIENDLY As is usual in Cyprus most places cater for children and it isn't at all unusual to see families with young children, both holidaymakers and inhabitants of the island, eating late and being out late. After midnight mainly adults could be seen here, but earlier in the evening and during the day there were more families. A rooftop section of the restaurant provided a well-equipped children's area. High chairs were in evidence. STAFF Waiting staff appeared quickly to take orders. Food and drinks were brought out quickly. Staff hovered around but not in an invasive way and so really, one barely had to move to order a drink. TV SCREENS Television screens showed football games earlier in the evening but after midnight when we usually went to this bar lively pop music was played. TOILETS On my first visit to this bar when the ladies was needed myself and my sister-in-law asked where it was to be found. On being told, "up the stairs" I must have frowned because a barman offered to carry me up. I expect he was relieved that I declined! Well, we made it up the stairs and to the Ladies and decided that these facilities were of a good standard. My husband later confirmed that the Gent's loos were decent enough too. DISABLED ACCESS I thought the Fiesta Snack bar and Grill itself was easy to access as the ground around it was fairly well tended (be careful of the irrigation pipes around though!) and different ground levels were ramped where necessary. The downstairs and outside areas of the Fiesta Bar were easy enough to access but the toilets were upstairs. Possibly a toilet was available downstairs but I don't know if this is the case. LOCATION/CONTACT The Fiesta snack bar is located on Poseidon Avenue set back and just inside the Avanti Village Complex, on the square. There are a few other bars and restaurants close by and some shops. It's easy to get here and to get home as buses stop close by and taxis are easy to find. Fiesta Snack Bar & Grill Avanti Village Plazza Poseidonos Avenue Paphos Cyprus Telephone: 0035 7 26913483 /26913341 Email: Nakpol@hotmail.com OVERALL I thought that The Fiesta Snack Bar & Grill offered a very good menu for lunch and dinner and the prices weren't too bad either. I wouldn't say they were the cheapest we had come across but for the choice and quality of food we all considered it to be fair. But mainly I enjoyed visiting this bar because of its friendly and lively atmosphere. I am going back to Cyprus in a few weeks for a holiday and I hope to again enjoy a drink or two and perhaps even a meal, in the Fiesta Bar. Read the complete review |
