Advantages: Gets you away from the Beijing headbangers

Disadvantages: closes about 4 hours a day though I have done 36 uninterrupted there

The Den,

The Den is a well established bar to the East of the Central area (the area that is home and playground to the majority of ex-pats here. It is a Western syle bar run (hands-on) by a tough, shrewd Chinese/Mongolian businessman. Its more or less like a good pub (though with a Chinese staff). You can get good value meals, (Western and Westernised Chinese) more or less any drink you want (including Guiness) and female companionship if you are in the mood. Its reasonably priced, good value, safe and the meeting place of many long-term expats. It has big-screen TV's and projectors which are used to play major sporting events including Rugby, Football (American and the real one) Aussie rules, Cricket etc., When there are no sporting events there is a decent background music selection. Paul, the owner is a good guy (Mongolian) who has been known to befriend many an ex-pat. It is the home of the Red-Devils rugby team and the Vikings soccer team both of which it funds for kit and transport. All together a safe, friendly home fom home for those of us who have been here too long and want to remember what a watering hole should be about, i.e. no spit and sawdust and no hi-tec glamour with prices to match.

Summary: A very useful oasis.
