Advantages: Varied nightlife until the small hours

Disadvantages: hard to know where to start

Hamburg has a lot to offer the pleasure seeker and I'm not just talking about sex. As the city has very lenient licensing laws, most bars and cafés can stay open as long as you would like to sit there. This often means that most places don't get going until about 10pm and can go on until the small hours or even mid morning!. I lived in the city for a few years and managed to sample some of the many bars and have compiled a small list to give you a head start:

'Aurel' in Ottensen is a great bar, the music can be very loud if all you want is a chat and it gets very full later on in the evening. It does however serve the best 'Caipirinha' in Hamburg and serves cheap cocktails until 9pm.

'The Tower Bar' at the Landungsbrücken is at the top of a large hotel tower. It offers spectacular views of the city as well as a very extensive cocktail menu. It opens at 6pm and the first hour is happy hour!

'The Miller Bar' in San Pauli is away from the hustle and bustle of the Reeperbahn. The atmosphere is very friendly and the drinks are good. They also offer light bar snacks and a wonderful continental breakfast to suit all tastes.

'Rosi's Bar' on the Hamburger Berg is a noisy, vibrant 70s retro bar. It gets very full at the weekends. But is worth a visit to see the decor and sit out on the sofas in the back room behind the bar. The place probably hasn't changed in 30 years but somehow manages to attract a young and hip crowd.

'Roschinskys' also on the Hamburger Berg. This bar also has a dance floor and the music played is very varied. It is not so loud that you can't have a conversation but it is quite 'boppy'. The drinks to try are the frozen margherita and the bottled Astra.

'Zitrus' near the Rathaus (townhall) is an upmarket place that caters for the black clad trendy types. The bar prices reflect the clientelle unfortunately. However it is
a great place to sit and have a chat with travelling companions in a very relaxed atmosphere.

'Finnigan's Wake' also near the Rathaus (townhall) is a tip for all of you wanting to keep up with your British football. Finnigan's is a typical irish bar that offers full Anglo-Irish fayre (fish and chips, cooked breakfast) all washed down with a pint of Guinness. It also show the football on a huge TV screen on week nights and at the weekend.

There are many many many more bars to suit all tastes but these are my particular favourites. If you discover some others then please let me know. Otherwise Prost and enjoy!

Update: Ryanair are now offering cheap flights from Stansted to Hamburg!

Wall Street by the Alster is great. It is a cocktail bar and there is a happy hour called "The Price Crash" where prices go down and sometimes you can end up having cocktails for 3 DM a time - of course you only find out at the end of the hour how big the price crash was, so you can't stack up 25 cocktails deliberately.
