Advantages: Visit all the icons, drink and eat in any type of bar you can imagine

Disadvantages: Too far away, staying there is expensive

I enjoy a drink in the UK and was a bit wary of the safety side of hanging out in New York. I went on holiday with a rough guide in hand. Staying in Hotel 17 @225 east 17th I traveled to many bars of vastly different types all over Manhattan. I have traveled far and wide but was amazed to find the friendliest people I have ever met in a major city. The bar staff introduce themselves (the cynics amongst us, me included, thought this was tip orientated, at least at first) and then introduced anyone else they had been talking to. I met Alcoholic Vietnam vets, Rich bankers, writers, singers, garbage men and wannabes from all over the states and Europe. I was drinking in swanky whiskey and wine bars and neighborhood bars in the ?worst? areas. Everyone has a story and if you enjoy meeting people it is just a blast. I saw live music in many small bars as well. I can recommend Tracy J?s near Union square on E19st, ask for Sean. I can also recommend a bar in the meat packing district in south Manhattan, it has 1000 bras hung up behind the bar, donated by customers, the waitresses abuse the customers with bull-horn megaphones. Unfortunately I can?t give you a name of the place as I arrived there at 3am on my last night with 1 Californian guy, 1 local guy and 2 Dutch girls I met the previous night??.
If you enjoy a night out in the UK, I can assure you Manhattan is safer and a hell of a lot less boring than a hot beach holiday.

The bar with the bra's is Hoggs and Heffers and is a hangout for actors. Drew Barrymore goes there a lot - she lives in an apartment block round the corner. The nearest subway station is 14th Street on the A,C,E lines.
