I usually go to academic conferences in Prague, which can be quite dry and sober affairs at the best of times. However academics, like many other sectors, like to unwind after a hard days arguing and posing, so repairing to the bar to discuss the latest theoretical perspectives, or to just get drunk, is a frequently-indulged pastime post-conference. Naturally, Prague is world-famous for its beer, and rightly so. Some of my favourites are the Irish theme bars off Wenceslas Square (which isn't a square, but there you go). Good food (a rarity in Prague in my opinion - Czech grub is too stodgy for me, I can feel my arteries hardening within a square mile of it) is available there, and a sort of Guinness stout that may or may not be passable, according to taste. Beware the sex bars in that area though, and the East European girls openly selling sex on the right-hand side going up Wenceslas. The Czech police are usually tolerant of these women, but of course that shouldn't detract from the fact that Prague bars are great, the usual English 'stag night' berserkers notwithstanding, the beer is cheap and plentiful, although as a non-smoker I find that the ubiquitous cigarette smoke in the pubs and bars literally gets right up my nose. But, don't let that put you off; Prague is still a great place to frolic, and the architecture is magnificent.
