Proper Old School Class (Cafe` Tortoni)
Member Name: paulie1975
Advantages: Classy, tasteful, well maintained, great food and drink Disadvantages: Too many tourists This is the oldest and most elegant cafe in Buenos Aires, it prides itself on its history and in maintaining its standards. The cafe was built in 1858 and is set on the historic Avendida de Mayo, one of the most important streets in the country. When you see the outsides of the cafe, there is a doorman which is unlike any but the poshest hotels in the city, you enter and its like a parisian cafe in your mind, waiters dressed in full penguin suit with the aprons and a tray on one hand guide you to a table, thankfully the menus are in Spanish and English, you can visit for a full meal, enjoying steak, empanadas and the best of Argentine cuisine, have a nice glass of Malbec, or settle down for tea, or the local drink Mate and a selection of amazing tortes and tarts, I did this and was so happy I did the Mate was lovely, the cakes lovingly prepared and presented. The service was amazing, the decor is wonderful with so many pictures and the whole building maintained so well, the only issue I had was the tourists rushing around taking photos, when your trying to read and take in the ambience this ruins it, but I guess they have to make their money somehow. Overall a real show of old style argentine elegance which is as classy and well presented as the city itself. Summary: Proper Old School Class |
