Advantages: Decent music, good location, reasonable prices

Disadvantages: A bit crowded, too small, not that authentic

I don't make a habit of visiting Irish bars when I'm travelling unless I'm seeking out a football match, I can't even use this excuse here though! What I do tend to look for is a rock orientated bar and I was travelling with someone who was partial to an expat bar who somehow managed to persuade me that Karaka - the Irish bar in Dubrovnik was the place to find rock music.

To be fair, he wasn't far wrong. Located in a busy little side-street, Karaka seems far too small for the amount of custom it manages to draw in. I suppose that part of the charm of this pub (which doesn't really resemble an Irish bar other than some tat on the wooden walls inside) is getting their early so that you can grab a seat outside.

The pub gets heaving with sweaty tourists and it most definitely does play rock music, it's not as bad as I thought or have made it sound - the atmosphere was pretty fun, the beer wasn't too expensive and there is a shop which makes delicious sandwiches just around the corner. I did notice that the clientelle was rather on the aged side and the gerry-atrick couples enjoying a quiet drink did seem a little out of place. If it was another town, I probably wouldn't go there but Dubrovnik is a bit limited in its nightlife choices in my book with nothing original and everything just geared to tourists.

Summary: Almost unavoidable!
