Advantages: Good, cheap pint of Guinness. Decent bar food.
Disadvantages: A wee bit frayed around the edges.
This is a grand city centre pub located on the corner of Merchant's Quay and Lower Bridge Street in Dublin at the far end of Temple Bar. Walk up the south quay of the River Liffey from O'Connell Street Bridge going towards Heuston Railway Station, and it's on your left hand side. (10 minute stroll)
The pub has been around a fair while and caters mostly for the tourist trade, with shamrocks, leprechauns, and all sorts of Irish memorabilia in abundance and traditional Irish music on a nightly basis. That is except for the weekends when the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) supporters are in town for a match. Then it is heaving to the rafters with GAA people all supping down pints of Guinness (and anything else they can get their hands on) at a rate of knots. This is never more so than when County Kerry are in town as the landlord is a Kerry native and well known in GAA circles.
The fact that it boasts one of the best (and cheapest) pints of Guinness in Dublin no doubt helps to keep it extremely busy.
I've used it a few times at lunchtimes when they have a decent enough bar food menu at reasonable prices. My wife and daughter reckon their chicken curry is excellent (I don't like curry!) and they also have traditional Irish fare like bacon and cabbage on offer.
The décor is OK and clean enough but the place could do with a good makeover at this stage as it's beginning to fray around the edges just a little.
A decent enough pub to drop into for a quick pint or a bite to eat if you happen to be passing, but not one to go out of your way to visit. (Unless of course you're big into GAA or traditional Irish music!)
