Advantages: Quiet, beergarden, play area

Disadvantages: Quieter than others, wasps divebombing your beer

The Hofbraukeller is the quieter, less touristy cousin of the famous Hofbrauhaus. You can find it on Wienerplatz a ten minute walk from the Deutsches Museum, and it has the requisite beer hall along with a large beer garden. There's a children's playground in the beergarden as well, and it's shaded with trees so you can sit out with no fear of sunburn.

Traditional Bavarian food is served and they have some fantastically good value lunchtime specials - there's nowhere else in Munich you can buy half a duck with dumplings and veg for six euro, and it tastes good too. Try the kasespatzle with mushrooms if it's available, or eat the traditional beergarden food outside at the self-service areas.

Staff are no more or less friendly than you'll find anywhere else in Germany, but they all wear traditional Bavarian dress and tend to be older, career wait staff who know exactly what they're doing. It's a far nicer experience there than at the busier, more rushed Hofbrauhaus and the beer's the same. Try this one.
