Advantages: Not too artificial

Disadvantages: Pricey

PJ Clarks is situated on the corner of 3rd Avenue and East 55th Street. It is billed as an old style pub, and it bears an uncanny resemblance to many Irish theme pubs in the UK. Inside there is a long bar where you can sit and drink, and behind that there is an area with table for food too. I suspect that it is not all artificially styled though and the bar has been around for a long time. It's certainly worth a visit, and is a welcome change from another Starbucks, or a hotel bar.

The beer is typical for America - there's Budweiser and Coors, and there's Samuel Adams too, which tries to be like a British beer, and fails. There are also a couple of more local beers which were surprisingly tasty. Better then Budweiser anyway. The only problem with the beer is the price. When I went it was $3.50 for about a half pint (they didn't do bigger glasses). This is steep even for Manhattan in my opinion.

The food in PJ Clarks is quite good. It is trying to offer something a bit different - e.g. they only do saute potatoes, not chips. The food tended towards the Irish kind of thing as well as more typical pub junk food, which generally meant that there was something a little healthier on offer too. The service is very good - not too pushy, but prompt and polite. The prices for the food were more reasonable, with a large sandwich costing as much as 2 halves of beer.

Better is very relative in this case. Give me a nice pint of 6X any day.

Interesting - I thought Samuel Adams was a good beer - better than the normal rubbish they sell.
