Advantages: Absolutely delicious

Disadvantages: We dont have it over here

Swiss Chalet first opened in 1954 on Toronto's Bloor Street and stayed open for 52 years, until 2006 when it closed down due to the construction of a condominium. There are now over 200 restaurants throughout Canada and America.

Swiss Chalet is mostly known for being a rotisserie and grill and is famous for it's chicken dishes and dipping sauce. In certain parts of Canada, you can order online as well as having numerous restaurants and drive through. You can also phone in your order, or place one in a restaurant for take out.

Even though Swiss Chalet is more commonly known for its chicken dishes and Chalet sauce, they also serve a wide range of other foods such as burgers, ribs, salads, vegetarian options and sandwiches as well as many deserts, starters and drinks.

One of the most popular dishes is the half-chicken dinner, which was also my favourite. The meal consists of half a slow roasted chicken with Chalet sauce, a bread roll and a choice of side from fries, poutine (extra cost), baked potato, coleslaw, corn, salad, vegetables, rice or mashed potato that comes with or without gravy. This meal costs only $12.99, which is around £6.50, and although this seems a lot, you do get a lot of food and it keeps you full for a long time.

The man I lived with, John, loved Swiss Chalet as much as I did so it was a regular place that we went out for meals or ordered for a nice night in together. Generally when we ordered in, we would get the chicken and ribs family meal which consists of:
- Whole chicken
- ½ rack of ribs
- Large Chalet sauce
- 4 sides
- 4 bread rolls

The family chicken and ribs meal cost $36.99 (£16) and because there was so much food, it would normally last us for two meals.

John was the person who introduced me to Swiss Chalet so I totally blame him for me being so addicted. If ever he had done something wrong, he knew that instead of buying flowers or chocolates, Swiss Chalet would do the trick and I could never stay mad at him if he brought some home.

I wish I could tell you more about the food that Swiss Chalet serve but after my first visit, I was sold on the chicken and ribs from my first visit so I never tried anything else. Pretty boring, I know.

Even though the food at Swiss Chalet was amazing, I think it was the Chalet sauce that really made the meals for me. I can't quite put my finger on the exact taste but it has been compared to a more watery bbq sauce with added spice. The Chalet sauce is available in some Canadian supermarkets as a powder, like our gravy granules, so I made sure I bought a fair bit of it home with me and John still sends me some every now and again.

Seeing as this was my favourite place to eat while I was in Canada, I ate A LOT of it before I left, knowing I might not go back for a long time or even at all.

Summary: My favourite restaurant in Canada
