My MIL works as an Avon Rep so we always get a few of their products for Christmas pressies. My husband commented on this shower gel from Avon when he received it, saying "what a whopper!" as it was a large 750 ml bottle and we usually have smaller bottles of shower gel.
The shower gel is from the Avon Senses range which is usually nice so we had high hopes for this shower gel. Hubby started using it straight away and whilst I prefer a bath,, I shower when in a rush so nicked a bit every time I had a shower. It has just come to the end of its life (the bottle) which is pretty impressive with daily use as it has lasted more than three months!
Aside from the basic appearance of the large clear shower gel plastic bottle with a flip top lid in black plastic, which is fully recyclable. Through the plastic you can see it is a clear blue colour which is pretty manly looking which is fortunate as my hubby seems to be a fan of blue shower gels. I think it reinforces his masculinity! Scent wise, the shower gel is classed by Avon as 'Exhilarating' and has grapefruit, amber and cedarwood in it.
The first thing I notice when using this shower gel is the citrus hit. I don't think it is overly male in scent but the cedarwood and amber add a bit of a male musk to the smell of it. It is almost gel like in substance, it is so thick and we both used it with a shower puff which is the most economical way to use shower gel I find. It foamed up well and the whole bottle lasted ages.
The shower gel leaves you feeling really clean and the grapefruit adds an extra freshness to the whole experience which stays on your skin for ages afterwards. I do love citrus scented products and think I never quite got over the CK1 mania! I thought it gave great cleaning performance but didn't feel totally exhilarated after use but then I am usually rushing when I have a shower so it's a perfunctory wash and run for me.
For such a large bottle this shower gel is surprisingly good value to money, whilst it was a gift I know these retail for £2 - 4 pounds and my MIL will always buy our Christmas gifts when they are on offer so it's been a real bargain buy.
I would actually repurchase this shower gel as it is a lovely smelling shower product and one my hubby has enjoyed using, he even commented how sad he was when it finished, I think it'd been in the shower so long he thought of it as a friend! I told him I'd tried it a few times and he was a bit cross with me but I know he does the same with my toiletries... wait until our two girls are old enough to pinch his things, then he'll start complaining. So, if it's good enough to pinch then I suppose I should award it top marks in this review.
Any regular readers of my reviews will be aware by now that I work part time as an Avon representative when my poor health allows. This means that I have great access to any new products that Avon are launching, often getting to try them out before they are released in the Avon brochures.
One such product that was added to the well-known Avon 'Senses' range of shower gels recently was a brand new gel for men, namely the "Senses For Men Xtreme Shower Gel". I have tried out many of the products in the Avon Senses range in the past and have found all of them to be of a fairly high quality, with most of them containing some really gorgeous aromas, so I was keen to try out the newest offering and ordered it, regardless of the fact that it is a shower gel product aimed at men. I will often use my husband's shower gels as I find their rich, slightly spiced scents are often preferable to me in place of more feminine, rather 'flowery' products.
The Xtreme shower gel is available to buy in two different sizes, with the smaller bottle (500ml) generally costing around £2 - £3 and the larger (750ml) bottle costing £2 - £4. As @ June 2012, there is a promotion running on the Avon senses range where all of the smaller bottles can be purchased for £1 - £1.50 which is a bit of a bargain in my opinion.
The Senses Xtreme shower gel is described by Avon in the following statement: "Hydrates and cleanses skin, for a refreshing feeling. Mild and gentle, with grapefruit, amber and cedarwood." There was one clear point in this statement that really made the product appeal to me before I had even ordered it, and that was the addition of grapefruit in the formula as I absolutely adore products that contain refreshing fruit fragrances.
The bottle has a fairly attractive, slightly oblong design and is made of plastic which can be recycled. There is a black coloured plastic cap on the end of the bottle, which has a long 'strip' running down the middle of the cap. This is in fact a 'flip up' lid and I have found it very easy to use the lid on this product, even with wet or slippy hands. Underneath the lid there is a round hole, through which the shower gel can be dispensed. There is a fairly attractive label on the front of the bottle and the overall image of the product strikes me as being fairly attractive and eye-catching. The plastic bottle is clear, as is the thick gel contained within.
When it came to using the shower gel, I noticed that the liquid was quite thick when I was squeezing it from the bottle. This is not a criticism at all, and it gave me the impression that the product was one of a fairly high quality. I have found that cheaper or more 'budget' brands of shower gel that I have used in the past have been quite thin, and the liquid seems to run all over the place when it is dispensed from the bottle.
I noticed immediately that the smell of the shower gel was quite strong, and the aroma was present even before I had begun washing myself. I find the smell of the Avon Xtreme shower gel is a really pleasant one. I also find it quite a nice product to use first thing in the morning as the scent feels slightly revitalising as I am using the gel and I think certain scents and strong-smelling products help me waken up in the morning! This slightly 'revitalising' quality made the product an ideal candidate to take with us on holiday recently when we knew we would be suffering from the high humidity and hot climate, together with the horrible jet-lag from our long flights. I was right in this assumption, and the refreshing quality of the shower gel was absolutely ideal, making us feel slightly more uplifted and refreshed which is just what we had needed!
The aroma feels quite woody at first, and has a fairly masculine tone to it which is what I had expected as the product is of course aimed at the male consumer. Once the gel has been allowed to reach a soft lather (which it does so quite easily) the tone of the aroma changes slightly and the citrus edge that had initially been sitting on the outskirts comes to the forefront, giving the scent a sweeter feel. Whilst not being at all overpowering or sickly, the sweetness in the aroma is balanced by the grapefruit fragrance to give a sort of 'tang' which makes the product feel quite refreshing to use. This is a very pleasant trait and I find that the scent is one that I have really enjoyed throughout my use of the shower gel. I have also chosen to use the product as a sort of 'bath foam' product, choosing to pour a little of the clear liquid under a hot running tap. Whilst this practice does not achieve the largest amount of soapy bubbles that I have ever experienced, there is a sufficient lather produced and I find the bathwater takes on a rather refreshing feel which has been quite pleasant given the hot weather we have been experiencing lately.
The gorgeous smell doesn't last particularly long on my skin, but this is not something that would deter me from repurchasing the product in the future as I prefer to use perfumes and body spray products to achieve my preferred fragrances.
I have experienced nothing in the way of irritation to my sensitive skin or my eczema after using the Senses Xtreme shower gel, so I do think that the formulation is fairly mild and rather kind to skin. In actual fact I do not find the shower gel has dried my skin out at all. Don't get me wrong, I don't find that the shower gel has any great moisturising properties and I still need to use a body cream or other moisturiser product after bathing or showering, but this is something that I find is the case with most similar products that I use on a regular basis, and so I won't be deducting any marks from the product rating for this.
Overall, I was very pleased with the performance of the Avon Senses Xtreme Shower Gel for men and I have already purchased a second bottle. It is a product that both my husband and myself have enjoyed using and I like the fact that the gorgeous smell has a slightly 'awakening' feel to it, making it an ideal product for us to take on our recent travels when we were suffering from horrendous jetlag! Whilst it could never be described as being the most luxurious product that I have used, I thought it met my own needs and I have nothing negative to report about it at all.
