Get yourself down to the Cowshed!

I had heard of Cowshed products and seen them in John Lewis, however it was only a few months ago that I got the opportunity to try them, courtesy of a magazine. I can't remember which magazine it was exactly (although I suspect it was either Cosmo or Marie Claire) but they were giving away free 100ml bottles of Cowshed bath and shower gels on the front.

The one I got was Moody Cow, others in the range include Lazy Cow, Knackered Cow, Grumpy Cow, Horny Cow, Wild Cow, Saucy Cow and Dirty Cow, and there is also a range of products for men entitled Bullocks! Cowshed are not limited to bath products they also sell facial skincare, baby and maternity products as well as candles and room fragrances.

All Cowshed products are made with 100% natural essential oils which they say are organic, 'wild crafted' (whatever that means) and fairly traded. They are also free from parabens, petrochemicals, sulfates and artificial colours and fragrances. They are also suitable for vegetarians, although not vegans as some contain organic beeswax and wildflower honey, and they don't test on animals.

The Moody Cow bath and shower gel is described as being 'balancing' and containing rose geranium and frankincense essential oils. I did notice however, when checking the ingredients label that these are not the only oils it contains as there are also lavender oil, ylang ylang oil, bitter orange oil, chamomile oil, clove bud oil and cinnamon leaf oil in this product.

The packaging of the product is modern and sleek. The bottle is made of a slightly frosted plastic which still allows you to see how much product you have remaining and it is adorned with a black white and blue label. The label is predominantly white with a black silhouette of flowers (they actually look like thistles) and it has a blue band and blue writing at the top. It seems each fragrance has a different colour associated to it which makes products of the same fragrance more recognisable. For example Lazy Cow is packaged very similarly however has a purple band, Grumpy Cow is green etc...

The smell of the shower gel is lovely, although very strong. I'd say that if you are someone who likes a subtle or gentle scent from your bath products then perhaps this would not be the best choice. I can immediately smell the essential oils and I think they make the product smell quite herbal in a way. Cowshed describe this as 'a floral, oriental blend' and I'd say it is more oriental than it is floral, although there are definite floral undertones to the scent. The main scents to me are the frankincense and the ylang ylang which are quite spicy and the scent is quite heavy. In a way the scent reminds me of Christmas, but I don't know if that's a subconscious thing, with me linking Frankincense and Christmas in my head!

The gel itself is a slightly yellowish colour and very thick, which I think indicates its quality. You don't need to use a huge amount each time, which makes it a little more economical, as this is quite pricey. You can use it lathered up directly on your skin as a shower gel, or it also advises to pour under running water for a 'sumptuous soak'.

I have only tried this in the bath once, as I have another huge bottle of bubble bath on the go at the moment. I found that the product created some bubbles, but not a huge amount really despite me adding quite a generous amount of the gel. The bubbles didn't last very long either unfortunately, however on a more positive note the smell really lingered in the water and was quite relaxing.

As a shower gel I find this to be a much better product. As I said only a small amount is needed, and if you use a mesh shower puff you will get a better lather which means you can use even less. I wouldn't say the gel feels particularly creamy, but it does feel good against the skin and produces a very rich lather which is more than adequate if you need to shave your legs or other bits! The smell of this is really strong and it really does envelope you ...like I said not for the faint hearted! Because of the thick consistency and strong smell of the product I do think it feels like a very luxurious product to use, and I do come away feeling more pampered than when using a 99p bottle from the local chemist! They say you get what you pay for and this certainly does feel very indulgent.

After using this my skin feels incredibly soft. I have fairly dry skin in general as well as eczema on my neck and foot, and I find some shower gels can leave my skin feeling quite tight and uncomfortable as well as exacerbating the dryness issue. This product leaves my skin feeling hydrated and there is no irritation to the areas where my eczema is, although I know ideally I shouldn't be using scented products on those areas anyway. The scent of the product lingers too, and it's quite a relaxing scent. I know the product is called Moody Cow, and although I wouldn't necessarily say this is uplifting as such, I do think it's quite relaxing and the scent makes me feel quite chilled out.

Of course for all its good points there has to be a downside and I suppose that for me it would have to be the price. For a 300ml bottle expect to pay £16 at John Lewis. Personally I think that's a hell of a lot of money for what I would class as an everyday product. Saying that my travel sized bottle has lasted a very long time as it's thicker and produces more lather than cheaper shower gels, so you will probably get more uses per bottle.

Price aside I actually think this is a really lovely product. It smells lovely (although may be a little strong for some tastes) and lathers up well making my skin feel gorgeous. I couldn't really afford to buy myself another bottle of this, but Christmas is on it's way, so hint hint Santa!!
