Recently I've been trying to tidy my bathroom - which involves finishing off the tons of bath products that are half used, and working through some of the stuff I was given as gifts that I've never used .
This Decleor product, the toning shower and bath gel, was a present I recieved last Christmas . Knowing that Decleor was a premium brand with a price to match, I resolved to put it aside for a treat, so I could really use and savour it . Recently having started a weight loss programme and lost a good amount so far, I decided the time was right for a reward, and decided to open this .
I've no idea how much the person who gave this to me paid, and it would be rude to ask, but a quick look on google shows that it ranges in price at between £18.70 - £32.80 for a 400ml bottle. Even at the cheaper end of that price scale, thats a pretty hafty price tag for a shower gel - someone out there must love me very much . The bottle, as you'd hope for something so pricey, si a rather stylish teardrop design with a pearly lid, through which you can clearly see the lovely blue gel.
The instructions for use advise either to pop a little into your bath, or to use on a sponge in the shower . Not having a shower, I opted to squirt a little under the taps in the bath , where it started to bubble up . I'll admit I was quite stingy, with this being so pricey, but it didn't seem I was getting many bubbles .
I wondered if perhaps I had been too stingy, so decided to pop a little on a sponge to wash myself with - after all, it promises to tone the skin, and I really do want to look toned. It seemed to lather up much better with the sponge, and it had a lovely scent to it , a spicy mix of marjoram, lemon, rosemary and lavender . The scent is lovely, but not too feminine, so I imagine men might like it too . The scent didn't linger too long after getting dried after the bath though - perhaps a half an hour, then it was gone.
I didn't immediately notice any difference in the texture of my skin - but then nothing works immediately. However, I have been using this for 3 weeks solid now, and I still haven't noticed any difference . I don't feel, or look, any more toned than I did before I started using this.
This might be an expensive luxury product , and it might smell lovely, but it doesn't do what it claims . While I wouldn't be averse to recieving this as a gift again ( we all like a bit of luxury) simply because of the lovely scent, I'm only giving this two stars, for not matching up to it's claims .
I have always been a fan of decleor products and have been lucky enough to use them on many occasions in my previous career as decleor is a brand often used in salon and spas. It is a high end brand and therefore it is quite expensive and I often got lots of little sample pots which was just as well as I couldn't afford the full size!.
As my hubby know I love the brand I quite often get the odd product for Christmas and birthdays and the bath foam was one of my recent ones.
I love a good soak in the bath and I make it a proper event, lock the door, light my candles a nice coffee and my favourite magazine or latest blockbuster book and I always need bubbles and lots of them and preferably ones that last and don't disappear the second I get in!.
======= The Product ======
The decleor gel comes in the classic bottle shape of decleor bath products and has a screw off lid.
The product is marketed as a toning shower and bath gel with plant extracts. The colour of the gel in the bottle has a gorgeous turquoise hue and looks like the Caribbean sea.
It claims that it "removes impurities and neutralizes the effects of hard water. The specific properties of the Laminaria algae extracts with their trace elements together with the essential oils of ALGUROMES gives the shower gel soothing , relaxing and invigorating properties." I have to say that I have worked in the beauty industry for a long time and in all honesty I have no idea what that means apart from the ability to soften hard water!.
======= The Scent ======
When I unscrewed the cap and sniffed the bottle as you do I was greeted with a very strong scent that filled my nose and nearly brought tears to my eyes!. After using high brand products in salons for years you think I would have learned that the high brand products if they have a scent it is usually quite strong and because the quality of the ingredients are high it is usually very potent.
The ingredients used in this gel include essential oils of Rosemary, Lemon, lavender, Marjoram and Laminal Algae extract.
The scent is well balanced between all the essential oils and although I am not a fan of Lavender it does mix in well with all the others and producing a very refreshing and uplifting scent.
======= Using The Gel =====
I have to be honest and say that I tend to use it as a bath gel rather than a shower gel as for that price I want my moneys worth!.
When you pour it into the bath the gel has quite a fine gel quality to it and if you are using it in the bath I would recommend using only a capful or maybe two. As soon as the gel hit the running water the scent really did fill the bathroom and the gel started to bubble straight away.
As soon as I got into the bath the water did feel very soft and smooth and the bubble were really creamy when I rubbed them on my skin. I did notice that the bubble lasted longer than a cheaper brand but not really long enough to warrant the price based just on the bubble factor.
I did notice that after the bath my skin felt very smooth and moisturizer and the scent stayed on my skin but only in a very subtle way and I don't think that anyone else would have noticed it.
======= My Conclusion ======
I am not sure that it is the best bath gel to use at night as the scent is very refreshing and invigorating and I think is better suited to the morning as it really does wake you and clears your head.
I would also recommend using it if you are blocked up or suffer with blocked sinus as it really cleared my nasal passages (Sorry but it really did and I think it's great for that purpose alone!)
I have mentioned that I suffer with migraines and I find that if I am having a mild one (Doesn't happen often!) a bath with this can help alleviate some of the pressure and tension.
I am not convinced that the gel has any toning benefits though and if you are considering buying it for this reason that I would save the money and buy some trainers to go running!.
It will last a long time as you only need a capful or if using in the shower only a small drop on the sponge. At that price it's best saved for special occasions or when you want a treat.
====== Cost And Availability =====
Decleor products can be purchased at some department stores such as larger Boots, John Lewis and others. It can also be purchased through spas and also online at decleor.co.uk
For a 250ml bottle the price is £20.50 at decleor.co.uk
Decleor do an extensive range of beauty products and this is one of my favourites. I have to confess that I usually rely on getting it as gifts on birthdays and christmas etc as it's definently a luxury shower gel rather than an everyday one.
For a shower gel the initial price is extremely expensive, however saying that if you look around you can find some good deals. For instance at lookfantastic they sell 400ml for £20.50 which is a bargain as you get 150mls extra all for the price of around £1 compared to most shops price for 250ml.
If you can afford to buy this product on a regular basis then I would highly recommend it, unfortunately for me it's out of my price range except as a luxury item used occasionally.
The cost is expensive but saying that, it does last a long time as you really do only need a very small amount of this compared to everyday brand showergels. I guess that actually for amount of uses like for like on everyday brand products then this really doesnt cost much. Im sure I could use 3 or 4 bottles of everyday brands to one bottle of this. This does make it good value for money but to justify spending £20 on a showergel in one go is hard to do on a budget.
The product itself is a beautiful blue colour and smells gorgeous. If pressed to describe the smell I would say personally it reminds me of menthol with other less powerful scents included to take away the harshness. It's a very refreshing smell and lasts on your skin for a good amount of time when your dressed.
The most economical way to use this would be in a shower using a puffball thing (those net things you can buy) as you need a minimal amount to lather up and one go will do your entire body. Flannels arent so great as I find I tend to use a lot more gel as it doesnt lather so well.
If you can afford to treat yourself then I would highly recommend this as the smell is wonderful, it lasts well and you need to use very little each time.
Yes I am back in the bathroom again, this time with an old favourite Decleor Alguaromes. It doesn't sound so enticing but it really is a wonderful bathing experience. I first tried it when I was in hospital after having my daughter who is now five. After labour having a really nice luxury shower gel to use made me feel human again. This is a versatile product that can be used in the shower or the bath. In the shower you only need a little to get a good foam. In the bath I use a couple of squirts, which gives lots of fragrant bubbles. The bubbles are small and last a long time, apparently the smaller the bubble the better it's longevity, big short lived bubbles are to be avoided. I especially like to use it in the bath. This is because of it's lovely deep turquoise colour and delicious aroma. I imagine myself floating in the Carribean under a turquoise sky, the bubbles like fluffly white clouds floating by. The fragrance comes from the herbs, lavender and sea algae. It doesn't smell of anything in particular but a real mixture. It's lavender but herby with a hint of the sea in the background. The claim on the bottle is that the 'laminaria' algae extracts with their trace elements together with the essential oils makes the product soothing, relaxing and invigorating. This seems to be true as although you feel relaxed, you don't feel sleepy or lethargic after your bath, just peaceful and refreshed. My skin is quite sensitive, and I have not had any irritation problems. The skin is left quite soft, but not as moisturised as with a non- foaming essential oil product, so I generally follow with a body lotion. The active ingredients are... Essential oils of Marjoram,Lemon,Rosemary,Lavender 3%. Laminal Algae Extract 5%. Another claim on the bottle is that it is toning, but I probably don't use it often enough to get a toning effect.
Now I did say at the beginning that this is a luxury product, not just because of it's quality but also the price. Which is £20 for 400ml. So I tend to drop hints around Christmas and my birthday if I am running out. I also never leave it sitting in the bathroom for anyone else to use, this one I keep for myself. During the five years I have been using it the bottle has also improved. It used to come in a very utilitarian plastic bottle, with block lettering. Over the years the bottle has gained some attractive gentle curves and a more decorative appearance. Although this has no bearing on the actual product inside, if you do spend £20 on a bottle of shower and bath gel you want it to look good as well as work well. Decleor are a French company with over 20 years experience. They specialise in using essential oils and plant extracts in their products. The products are used in salons and health farms, and can be brought from salons and also from QVC, at qvcuk.com or sky and cable television.
This was the first 'high end' bath product I ever bought and still the only one that I buy on a regular basis. The big advantage for me is that I can use this, everyday if I want to, and get absolutely no skin irritation (which I am susceptible to) at all. It also smells really lovely, relaxing yet fresh at the same time, and is just as suitable for blokes too (in fact i've had to hide it so hubby doesn't use it all). Although it's expensive it does last for ages. It's not a bubby as some of the cheap stuff, probably due to the lack of artificial chemicals, but a little does go a long way. It also has 'proper' aromatherapy ingredients in which are supposed to be great for relaxing and unwinding, which I think probably work (I'm just very sceptical about such claims) (the 20 pound price tag below is for the salon size)
Decleor's Alguaromes may not be the cheapest bath product you ever buy, but it's definitely one of the best. This is a real Rolls Royce of bubble bath, packed with real essential oils and no artificial ingredients. It also contains sea algae extracts which are designed to have a firming and detoxifying effect on the skin. I really don't know if all that works, I just know this is one of very few bubbly bath products I can use which doesn't dry my skin into that wrinkled prune state. It also smells absolutely divine, not at all sweet but somehow fresh and relaxing at the same time. I'm not rich enough to use this all the time, but find it wonderfully theraputic after one of those horrible days at the office or if I've been digging the garden and ache all over.
