Baldessarini Ambre was a fragrance from the house of Hugo Boss and is actually a high end menswear brand from this famous house. Baldessarini fragrances claim to separate the men from the boys!
The range takes its name from Austrian born Werner Baldessarini, former chairman of Hugo Boss. This is the guy who snorted about the idea of dress-down Fridays at work: "Casual Friday - this is a disaster! Why should you come in on a Friday and say it's sporty Friday, so I'm going to wear a jogging suit?" This guy liked the idea of dressing up and his motto seemed to be to get every man to dress to his full potential too.
Anyway, enough about the man who this range was named after... My husband is a diehard Hugo Boss fan and when he spotted Baldessarini Ambre shower gel priced at £8.75 at cheapsmells.com he ordered a tube of it straight away before it sold out as he basically wanted to try out the shower gel before going for the EDT.
Before I go any further, this is clearly a man's shower gel. I wanted to see why hubby was so excited about getting this shower gel and paying £8.75 which was apparently a bargain (I understand it normally retails at around £15 in stores). I tried it out a couple of times myself to see what all the fuss was about.
Ladies, be warned; Baldessarini Ambre was REALLY not created for us females to use! It is very clearly a man's scent; I won't be using it again (to my husband's relief). I had to have showers again shortly after using this as I didn't like the quite masculine smell of it on myself. It definitely smelt much better on hubby when he used it, although I was glad the scent didn't seem as overpowering on him after showering with it as I found it to be on myself. It is worth mentioning that when using this shower gel the scent of Ambre linger in the bathroom for several hours afterwards. As a shower gel I can say that it assuredly works as a shower gel, i.e. it does clean. It doesn't lather up as well as many other shower gels I've used over the years but it's by no means the worst. It doesn't leave your skin dry though which is a plus but it's still necessary to use body lotion after showering with this.
Do you want to know how masculine this is? Baldessarini Ambre has a distinct composition of Whisky Oak blended with mandarin and red apple. The complicated heart notes have contrasting dark florals and leather accords whereas the base leaves you with a mix of labdanum, oakwood and vanilla and amber essence. The leathery scent is created from air samples from the scent of real leather and then infused with oils to add to the fragrance. I understand the fragrance's inspiration came from the luxurious interior of the Learjet aircraft!
If you're worried about smelling like an alcoholic after using this don't worry, the whisky scent is indeed present but doesn't overpower or suffocate. The leather smell though does become more evident as does the scent of red apples.
If you're interested in what the packaging looks like, the box the shower gel comes in is a nice bronze shade with the Ambre name and Baldessarini logo (which I understand is Baldessarini's signature), product size, ingredients, reference number, etc, in white text. Although there is a UK address listed on the side of the box, it also states that the product was made in Poland.
The shower gel tube itself is also bronze in colour and easy to open the lid to squeeze out the required amount of gel. It's nice and practical that this stands upside down (i.e. the lid is at the bottom) so you don't have to struggle with getting the last few bits of the gel out when reaching the end.
WHAT ELSE IS AVAILABLE IN THE AMBRE RANGE?
As well as the shower gel which is generally available in 150ml sizes you can get 75g deodorant sticks, 150ml deodorant sprays, 50 or 90ml edt and 50 or 90ml after shave balm.
WHO'S IT FOR?
This is definitely a grown up scent, I imagine it would suit men over the age of 30 or even younger guys if they want to seem more "grown up". I would recommend people testing it before forking out for the full sized product though as it might not be to everyone's taste.
All in all, I'm happy to give this shower gel an average 3 out 5 stars. I personally wouldn't be against hubby going the whole hog and buying the EDT now but I wouldn't say it's up there with any of my favourite scents.
