Happy Hippy is a Lush shower gel that I can certainly describe as being - lush!
I don't often use shower gel but this was a gift and a bit of a decadent treat for me in that regard. I don't use normal soap due to having very sensitive skin, but I'm generally happy to give new products a go, and what I can't use is always relished by my husband, so..
Happy Hippy is made of a pink grapefruit base, which I must admit put me off at first as I don't like grapefruit, but I like that they have used organic grapefruit as this means reduced pesticide residue which I know can have a negative effect on my skin.
This shower gel comes in the usual plastic bottles that can be recycled in store and is available in the usual 3 three sizes, £3.25 for 100ml, £5.95 for 250ml, and £10.25 for 500ml. I was given the smallest bottle and although I don't normally use shower gel I think the price is okay because, as with most high quality products, a little goes a long way with this product.
Happy Hippy is a pale yellow colour but apparently this can vary between yellow and red due to the natural ingredient of grapefruit. It is quite runny and thin so you have to be careful not to squirt too much into your hand when you use it - I made this mistake the first time I used it. I only used it on my legs the first time as the skin is less sensitive there than on my upper body and face, and I had no averse reactions to the shower gel, nor did I notice any excessive dryness afterwards like I do with soap.
The smell is interesting and I can't say that it reeks of grapefruit, which I personally think it s good thing! but it does also contain the essential oils bergamot and frankincense, so that could be why. I think it does have a bit of an Earl Grey smell to it which makes sense as the tea gets its flavour from bergamot oil. These oils are known for this strong smells and I suspect the tea-health connection of the oils led Lush to naming the shower gel 'happy hippy', although you don't have to be a hippy to enjoy good health and tea of course!
Although I have no complaints, I'm not a huge fan of this shower gel, simply because I don't feel a connection with the smell and feel of the product, which I normally do with Lush products. On the other hand it does leave the bathroom smelling fresh and clean, and it has given me a fresh, clean feeling when I have used it, which is of course what a good shower gel is meant to do. The mixture looks sticky but it isn't, it washes off well and if you are a grapefruit fan you will probably really enjoy the experience of showering with it.
My husband has used this shower gel a few times too and he says he likes it as much as any of his other shower gels, except that when we have run out of shampoo he has also used this shower gel in its place and been surprised at how well that has worked.
My main concern with Happy Hippy was that it would dry out my skin but after a few trial runs and regular uses now I can safely say that it hasn't hurt it at all, and that it creates quite a nice refreshing shower experience which I have missed in the absence of soap (I have been using a medicated alternative over the years).
As with all Lush products if you buy this shower gel you are paying for maximum natural and eco-friendly credentials, which they are always striving to improve. Pretty much all cosmetics contain nasty chemicals and although Lush hasn't ceased dependency on them entirely you will find that they use significantly less and are always updating products to use different ingredients that are safer for our health. Cheaper products simply do not have these credentials, and I speak here as someone with strong allergies to a lot of these chemicals - ordinary chemicals in some shower gels have for example caused me to start wheezing in the shower in the past. Thankfully this has never happened to me with a Lush product, probably because they use only a tiny amount of chemicals where absolutely necessary, compared to more mainstream products which contain loads of nasties. For this reason I have started using mostly Lush products on my toddler, as I don't want her to grow up with the allergies I have always suffered with.
I was really glad when they stopped using palm oil in their products too recently as it is causing such devastation to so many animal species in the Boreal rainforest and as far as I know no other cosmetics company has made the commitment to give it up, since palm oil is so financially cheap. Not cheap for the orangutans that are being wiped out though. So, I am becoming a bit of a Lush convert and realising that the products are worth the price, and I would even buy Happy Hippy again despite it not being an absolute favourite, because it doesn't irritate my skin and it doesn't have the drying effect that soap can have.
4 stars from me for this one - but 5 for this brilliant company!
For Valentines day, my fiancé bought me the Uplifted gift set from Lush, which included two 100 gram bottles of shower gel.
I do love lush but I am not very familiar with their shower gels as I usually use their bubble bars and ballistics, so I wasn't sure which shower gel to try first. In the end I decided to use happy hippy and I love it!
Happy hippy is a refreshing, grapefruit fragranced shower gel. A 100 gram bottle retails at nearly £4 and a larger bottle is also available. The shower gel comes in a reasonably small plastic bottle which is see through with a black flip-top lid.
It has a black label wrapped around it, which has happy hippy written on the front, along with a description of the shower gel. The shower gel looks a bit like honey, it's the same colour and the consistency is just the right thickness. It isn't a creamy kind of shower gel, it is more of a gel-like consistency.
The smell of this is gorgeous, it smells just like Lush describe - it is citrusy, fresh, uplifting and the smell of grapefruit is definitely very noticeable. I am not usually a fan of grapefruit as I find the smell quite overpowering and bitter, however the smell of it in this shower gel has a nice sweet edge to it and while it is very strong it isn't over powering.
The shower gel lathers well and can be used as a shampoo, but I just use it on my body. It leaves my skin feeling soft and fresh and I haven't had any irritation from it. I am very pleased with this shower gel however I'm glad I got it as a gift as it is quite over priced and I have used much cheaper shower gels which smell just as nice and have the same effect on my skin, the price is justified by the fact that the ingredients are all natural though.
Every Christmas my friend and I exchange Lush gift sets as we are both Lush addicts and this year she bought me an 'Uplifted' gift set which contained a range of products from Lush which are supposed to leave the user feeling uplifted and carefree.
Most of the products in the set I had used before including the Happy Hippy shower gel but to be honest it had been absolutely ages since the last time I had used it and I could hardly remember if I even liked it or not.
The main ingredient used in Happy Hippy shower gel is grapefruit which although is a fruit I detest to eat is one of my ultimate favourite scents in beauty products. This uses fresh pink grapefruit as well as bergamot oil and frankensese and it smells absolutely amazing and I couldn't believe that I hadn't bought this in years as I immediately fell in love with it and it has gone straight to the top of the list as far as my favourite shower gels at Lush goes.
The scent is much more fresh and natural smelling than most of the chemical smelling grapefruit scented products out there. I don't smell the Frankensense or the bergamot for that matter as the overwhelming smell is definitely the grapefruit. I don't mind this though as it is such a gorgeous smell and so fresh and almost edible without being sickly sweet and cloying. I even use this in my hair which is something I don't tend to do with shower gels because the scent sticks to my hair for the whole day. It also scents my skin for hours after getting out of the shower and I can use this in the morning and still smell it that evening. It is also really refreshing and great for mornings when you need a slight lift to get you going.
As well as smelling amazing it also works well as a shower gel and really cleans my skin without drying it out. It has a nice thick consistency and lathers up well meaning that I can really get to enjoy the benefits of the scent when I am in the shower or the bath.
For some reason this seems to be a lot cheaper than most of the shower gels from Lush which I think makes it a bargain. It comes in three sizes which are 100g, 250g and 500g costing £3.25, £6.25 and £10.75. I definitely plan on buying myself the largest size bottle when I get a chance to pop in to Lush and buy myself some treats.
First impression you have the same Lush bottle that you find across the entire range which I personally really like it has the black label with white writing and the logo across the top again in the same way that all the bottled products are labelled.
One thing you find on the lush bottles which I really like are the small round stickers which has a drawing of whoever it was which created the product you're buying and also there name written underneath. I just think this adds a nice personal touch to the product and knowing they made it rather than it being massed produce by machine is also reassuring.
I got the biggest bottle available but it comes in 3 different sizes but you will notice you make quite a reasonable saving the more you buy.
100g - £3.15
250g - £5.95
500g - £10.25
Obviously you'll notice looking at the price that it's quite pricey especially if you're comparing to cheaper options you may pick up in the supermarket. But for me there's a number of different reasons I will always pay the extra for Lush products =
Knowing exactly what's in your products as everything they use has a natural source and using the website you can see what's in and even more in-depth information about the individual ingredients.
Here's the ingredients from the Lush site -
Natural Ingredients are:
Water, Fresh Pink Grapefruit Juice, Grapefruit Oil, Bergamot Oil, Frankincense Oil, Lactic Acid, Limonene, Perfume
Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Cocoamphoacetate, Lauryl Betaine, Propylene Glycol, Methylparaben
All the packaging is recycled and is fully recyclable you can also take in your empty Lush pots and bottle tops and for 5 black pots they will reward you with a face mask which would usually come at a cost of £5.75 (they're amazing as well).
Absolutely no animal testing and all the products are sourced in the most ethical way and Lush employees are actually sent to inspect that everything is living up to the high standards (and rightfully so) that they have set.
Also could be included in here as it is a big plus for me is that a lot of the products including this one are made from completely Vegan ingredients which cannot be said for a huge amount of the other alternatives on the market.
Great quality products everything has been made using fresh ingredients and also natural ingredients meaning it's very good for your skin especially if you can sometimes suffer from irritation with the chemicals in other products.
(the above text is slightly edited as it is relevant across all my Lush reviews)
The actual conditioner is a transparent yellow colour it basically looks like a transparent version of the I Love Juicy Shampoo.
The smell you get when you first open and smell it out the bottle is straight away grapefruit this is because the main natural ingredient in the shower gel is freshly squeezed pink grapefruit juice.
When you use the shower gel you get a fantastic smell coming from it especially if you're in the shower you basically end up trapped in the lovely fresh grapefruit scent until you get out and likewise when using it in the bath you have the smell lingering around in the entire bathroom while you're relaxing which is always pleasant.
The good thing with the smell being very prominent is when you was it off the smell sticks to you very well as you would obviously like it too where as some shower gels will leave you with quite a strong chemical smell or unnatural fragrance you don't even get that in the slightest with Happy Hippy.
The shower gel comes out the bottle quite runny but not so much that it runs out your hands but just right so that it's good for washing with and not to think and lumpy.
It lathers up much more than you would expect even from using a tiny amount 2 small blobs in my hand is about enough to clean my entire body. But to get the most out of it as it is quite expensive so people would want to be sparing with how much they use I recommend getting a sponge as it foams up amazing off one tiny blob and is probably enough to give yourself a full clean 2-3 times.
When you wash off the shower gel before you get dried you already feel so cleansed which is obviously helped by the pleasant smell that comes with it as well.
When you're dry your skin is left feeling incredibly soft and healthy the essential oils are perfect for making sure your skin is healthy and hydrated.
Something to consider because Lush don't often have lines of products I would definitely recommend using this in conjunction with I Love Juicy Shampoo and Veganese Conditioner as they all contain sweet smelling fruits (pineapple, lemon, citrus and grapefruit). I have already reviewed both Veganese and I Love Juicy in my previous 2 reviews.
I would definitely recommend this product especially for someone who maybe hasn't tried Lush products before and isn't sure what to buy.
Having been a Lush fan for several years and never getting round to trying a shower gel (I was always preoccupied with their more innovative products!) I was really pleased to receive a bottle of Happy Hippy shower gel in my 'Wild Child' gift box.
Price and Availability
The bottle I received was 100g and retails at £3.15. This shower gel is available in two other sizes, 250g which is priced at £5.95 and 500g priced at £10.25. It can also be found in a variety of the pre-packed Lush gift boxes. Lush products are available in their stores and also via their website. I personally find £3.15 to be quite expensive for a shower gel especially one of this size but as a gift/treat it's worth paying more than you usually would. Overall the price is to be expected when shopping at Lush.
Happy Hippy comes in a clear, flip-top, squeezy bottle made of sturdy plastic. It takes a bit of squeezing to get the product out as the bottle is so sturdy. It a good choice of bottle design though as you can clearly see how much is left and towards the end of it's life you can stand it on it's top to make the last bits easier to get out. The label fits with the Lush 'chalkboard' theme and has the product title, logo, tag line towards the front of the label and an image of a stereotypical hippy and ingredient list round the sides. As with most Lush products it also has a 'made by sticker' which details who the product was made by, when it was made and it's expiry date. Overall there is no way you could mistake where this product is from, it is unmistakably Lush.
Having never tried a Lush shower gel before I had no idea what to expect. From the quality of previous Lush products I expected this product to be quite thick and from the packaging I expected a strong citrus scent, to be honest I didn't get any of these. I found the shower gel to be quite runny in consistency and my initial reaction to the smell was that it smelt like a cleaning product. However as the fragrance settled I changed my mind. Happy Hippy does have a citrus scent but for me it isn't over stimulating and shouting 'wake up and move' it's more of a mind cleansing fragrance and therefore I find it quite relaxing, it helps to clear my thoughts and freshen up my mind. I have used this product as both a bubble bath and shower gel and have found that in both ways you only need a little product to get a healthy bubbly lather. It also says that you can use this product as a shampoo, this is not something I have tried and I don't think I will try it. I much prefer to use a separate shampoo. In terms of how it affects my skin I can't say it has done wonders and I don't find it particularly moisturising but it does give a clean, refreshed feeling. I would say that this product can be used by either sex-although my fella knows better than to touch my Lush stuff!!
Overall I am pleased I got to try a shower gel and I quite like Happy Hippy. I'm not sure yet if I would go out and buy it myself but I would be more than happy to receive it as a gift.
Happy Hippy is a multi-purpose product from Lush. It can be used as both a shower gel/body wash and a shampoo. The product is hand made and contains only natural ingredients which are also suitable for Vegans.
Lush don't make any out of the ordinary claims with this product, the only major claim they make is that it can be used as a shampoo. They also state that this is the ultimate product for 'waking you up in the morning or for keeping you up all night' and state that it's a magic potion in getting you revitalised and ready to take on the day! This seemed like the ideal product for me as I am honestly like a sloth in the mornings, I drag myself out of bed and stumble around getting dressed, however I can honestly say that this stuff is very refreshing and it makes me feel quite energetic and ready to go about my day.
All the ingredients are natural and suitable for Vegans. There's a few different bits and bobs in this, but the ones that stand out to me most are fresh pink grapefruit juice and grapefruit water. Both of these provide Happy Hippy with its fresh and citrusy scent, and they are also acidic and antibacterial. Both of these ingredients are also suitable for spot prone and oily skin so if you do have oily, spotty skin then you shouldn't be wary of using this shower gel. Another igredient is bergamot oil. This is a citrus oil which has many purposes, and according to Lush, its fresh and light fragrance makes it a natural anti-depressant. They also state that it is thought this oil is able to ease anxiety and give mental clarity. Another very unusual sounding ingredient is frankincense oil, this has many uses including domestic, medicinal and ritual. It is used in chinese medicine as an antiseptic and anti inflammatoryand the scent is very unique - it's sweet and woody with a balsamic undertone. The full list of ingredients can be found on the Lush website.
**Price, Value For Money and Availability**
The thing that I love most about Happy Hippy is the price! It is so affordable and I like that there's an option of sizes to choose from - for example, some Lush products only come in big, expensive bottles, where as this comes in three different sizes. For a 100 gram bottle it's only £3.15, for a 250 gram bottle it is £5.95 and for a 500 gram bottle it's £10.25. I decided to buy the small bottle to start with, which lasted me for around 3 weeks with daily use. Because I was such a fan, I decided to purchase the 500 gram bottle in November last year. I have been using it almost daily and it looks hardly touched! A little goes a long way so it's brilliant value for money. Availability wise, this can be purchased from either the Lush website or in-store at your local Lush.
I really like the packaging, it's basically a sturdy plastic bottle. The bottle is slightly rounded and is transparent, meaning you can see how much you have left rather than having to guess! The bottle has a black flip lid and a black sticker wrapped around it. This has a brief product description, the product name, lush logo and a cartoon of a funky looking hippy. The product description simply reads "Mellow yellow hair and body gel with freshly squeezed grapefruits. Just the thing for centralising your aura." The packaging is simple but looks nice, it's easy to use and I can't really fault it.
**Smell and Texture**
The smell of Happy Hippy is gorgeous!! It has a strong citrus smell with grapefruit and orange the most prominent smells. It has a slight floral undertone with a grassy hint to it and it's the type of smell that most people will like in my opinion. The smell is the type that leaves me feeling 'clean' if that makes sense. It is definetly unisex and my boyfriend has used this several times! The smell builds up over a period of time, the more it lathers up the stronger it gets and it fills my bathroom with the gorgeous scent. The smell lingers on my skin for a while after use which I don't mind as it doesn't smell too strong or overpowering, nor does it clash with my perfume or body butter. The smell isn't really an accuired taste in my opinion as everyone that I know who has owned this has loved it - even my mum who is normally really picky about what scents she likes! The scent is definetly very refreshing and it's the type that makes me feel at ease and warm inside. The texture is nice, it's quite runny but is lightweight and lathers nicely. It doesn't feel heavy on my skin and is easy to wash off.
I purchased this mainly because I was in love with the smell, however a Lush employee also gave me a quick rundown of the product. I was fascinated that it could be used as a shampoo as well as a body wash and decided to purchase a bottle, mainly out of interest. I don't often have showers - only when i'm in a rush in the mornings and so I decided to keep this in my bathroom near my bath, rather than in my en suite. After using it in the bath though, I always take this into the shower with me as i'm really fond of it. The smell is gorgeous and extremely refreshing, the lightweight gel lathers up within seconds and it leaves my skin feeling clean, soft and silky, as well as smelling gorgeous!
I've also used this in the bath, for when I want a nice, long relaxing soak. In a weird way I think that it has the ability to be both relaxing and refreshing depending on what mood i'm in, if that makes sense! When used in the bath, it fills the bath with bubbles and it lathers just as well as it does in the shower. The bath water turns a very slight, light green if you use a generous amount of it. This shower gel isn't messy though and it doesn't stain the bath tub, it doesn't make the base of the bath tub slippery or greasy either like alot of shower/bath gels can.
I have used Happy Hippy as a shampoo several times now and have been very pleased with the results. I only need a ten pence sized amount to cover the whole of my hair and scalp, and the gorgeous smell lingers in my hair even once it's dry and straightened. The shampoo leaves my scalp and hair feeling nourished, rather than dried out and it didn't leave any white bits behind or cause my scalp to itch etc. My hair always feels smooth and silky after using this product and also looks shinier than it did before I began using it, so I think it's a brilliant shampoo as well as a body wash!
**My Overall Opinion**
I would highly reccomend this shower gel, it is quite expensive but you only need a small blob - a little goes a long way and even a tiny drop creates the most amazing smell. I love that it's a multi-purpose product and it is definetly one of my favourite Lush products! I award Happy Hippy five out of five stars - it's effective, affordable and a pretty flawless product!!
Happy Hippy Shower gel
You haven't heard of Lush?
I cannot imagine that anyone reading this has not heard of the lovely cosmetic/toiletry company called 'Lush' that started way back in the 80s as 'Cosmetics to go'. They make the most wonderful smelling and exciting things for pampering and they are very keen to support Fair Trade and eco ingredients. All their products are free from most nasty additives and not tested on animals.
"We believe in making effective products out of fresh fruit and vegetables, the finest essential oils and safe synthetics, without animal ingredients, and in writing the quantitative ingredient list on the outside.
We also believe in buying only from companies that test for safety without the involvement of animals and in testing our products on humans"
We are lucky enough to have a lovely Lush shop in the new Westfield centre in Derby and I get pulled in by the tempting smell every time I walk past. I love having freebies and the lovely people in this shop happily share all kinds of tempting freebies whenever I go in mainly because I seem to buy something after I have tried it so they usually get a sale as well.
This is one of the older bath/shower gel products as I can remember buying this one in the days of Cosmetic to Go.
The product description on the website for "Happy Hippy' Shower gel:
"The smiley and revitalizing grapefruit one. Our pink grapefruit shower gel is a magic potion to make the office seem inviting on dreary Monday mornings. It's made with fresh, organic pink grapefruits. These vary in colour, so your new bottle of Happy Hippy may have a slightly different lemon-to-rosy hue from the previous one you bought.
Now that the weather's improving, it's time to start indulging. This shower gel is the only product from Lush with this fragrance. There are similar scented products for example the Whoosh shower jelly but none are specifically this flavor.
Happy Hippy Gel comes in three sizes with prices of 100ml = £3.25, 250ml = £5.95, 500ml = £10.25. I agree that this is not a cheap gel but you really do only need a tiny amount to get a good lather and it is one of Lush's cheapest shower gels. My bottle has the usual 'packed by' sticker on it and a use by date but I don't get too worried by these days as I am not eating it after all. It comes in the standard Lush bottle with a flip top lid - at present these are not recyclable through Lush which their tubs are but hopefully they will do this in future. I do find these little bottles quite stiff and have to squeeze quite hard to get the product out which can be a bit annoying! .
Okay enough of the story behind what is it like?
The gel is a wonderful clear yellow colour but it can vary a bit depending on the colour of the grapefruit used and mine is quite thin - a bit like washing up liquid consistency. I dipped my finger in to the pot and the amount that came out was enough for one half of my upper body so you really need only the smallest amount to get a really good smooth lather. I like to let it soak in for a while before rinsing so that I can enjoy the lovely fresh citrus grapefruity smell. I find about a 2p amount in my hand is more than enough to create a good lather all over me and I can enjoy the wonderful refreshing aroma waking me up in the morning.
What do they put in this lovely Grapefruit gel?
Water, Fresh Pink Grapefruit Juice , Grapefruit Water , Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Cocoamphoacetate, Lauryl Betaine, Propylene Glycol, Grapefruit Oil , Bergamot Oil , Frankincense Oil , Lactic Acid, *Limonene, Perfume, Methylparaben.
The main ingredients providing the special properties in this fresh smelling gel are:
Grapefruit juice and water - useful for fighting cellulite and boosting the lymphatic system as well as being positively uplifting and reviving the mind .It also helps clear up congested oily skin and acne.
Bergamot Oil : Bergamot is a citrus fruit whose rind is used for extracting the Bergamot Oil. This oil is known to be anti biotic, anti septic, an anti depressant, and disinfectant so all positive here for me,
The main ingredients are uplifting so thereby living up to its 'Happy hippy' name.
Does it feel good and work well?
I am not one for showers as I love to lie and linger in a warm bath so I use this in my bath. I love the smell as I lie and close my eyes and the fresh citrus aroma gradually wakes me up and lifts me ready for the day ahead I would not use this at night time as it really is a refreshing lifting smell.
The other thing I like about Lush products is that when you use them in your bath or shower then the whole bathroom and our adjoining bedroom gets an air freshen as well. This 'Happy Hippy' gel does have a good strong fresh smell so it does linger in the bathroom and I can smell fresh grapefruit mildly on my skin long after my bath in the same way as other stronger Lush smells.
Not Quite so Great:
Lush products claim not to be full of unpleasant chemicals it should be okay for sensitive skin but it is always advisable to check if something you are going to use contains anything that you are allergic to.
Lush do somewhat gloss over the less great contents. I have done a bit of research and have discovered that some of these so called natural contents are anything but.
Methylparbens: see this site http://www.ehow.com/about_5453218_dangers-methylparaben.html These seem to be equally undesirable and can cause skin problems as well as possible links to male infertility and breast cancer!
Who is this product for?
This is a Lush unisex product meaning it is suitable for males and females and I would agree that it doesn't have an overly feminine sweet scent and I can't imagine a man being embarrassed to smell of this but I really like it too.
Is it just a shower gel then?
Lush shower gels can all be used as bath gels and shampoos as well. I tend not to use them as shampoos as I always have shampoo for dry hair and like my conditioner to match. I tend to use the Lush bar shampoos when travelling to save weight and spillage accidents. I do also use the solid conditioner for travelling for the same reason. However if you were going on short holiday you could take this small bottle ( 100ml is allowed in hand baggage) and it would serve as a shower gel and shampoo and that way you need not take lots of bottles and can still travel light with only carry on luggage. I was told that you can even wash your clothes with this but it is an expensive option for this purpose in my view.
I like this bath and shower gel, it is a nice fresh awakening scent which is refreshing and uplifting. It is gentle on my skin which is quite sensitive and sometimes reacts badly to shower gels. I find it nice to use in the mornings as it smells very fresh. It is quite expensive but as you only need a small amount it does last quite a long time so probably works out as economical as some others in the long term.
Thank you for reading and hope you may find this useful/interesting. This review may be posted on other sites under my same user name.
I'd never tried any of Lush's shower gels until recently, always opting for things for the bath as I love Lush products for relaxing. My friend recommended Happy Hippy to me, and said I should try a few out of Lush's range of shower gels as they're just as good as their other products. I decided to opt for the cheapest of the Happy Hippy range, a 100g bottle costing £2.95, although they also come in 250g and 500g bottles for £5.80 and £9.95 respectively.
What Lush say: "The smiley and revitalizing grapefruit one. Our pink grapefruit shower gel is a magic potion to make the office seem inviting on dreary Monday mornings. It's made with fresh, organic pink grapefruits. These vary in colour, so your new bottle of Happy Hippy may have a slightly different lemon-to-rosy hue from the previous one you bought."
Happy Hippy comes in a plastic bottle with a black flip top lid with the well- known black and white Lush labelling. The gel is a lovely shade of yellow, quite vibrant and really summery, I flipped open the lid and was hit by the lovely fruity, summery scents of Happy Hippy. It's grapefruit scent is lovely and citrussy and is strong but not overpowering, I wouldn't say Happy Hippy is a particularly girly scent and would suit men aswell.
When I used this for the first time I was surprised by how well the gel lathered up, I use this on it's own and with exfoliating gloves and both times it has created lots of frothy suds. The scent is lovely when using, it's still quite strong but does become a little more subtle when it's dispersed over the body, the freshness of the scent really comes through and this is perfect for sunny summer morning showers to wake you up and get you ready for the day ahead. Happy Hippy feels very soft and silky against the skin and there is a really luxurious feel to it.
When I got out of the shower my skin felt lovely and moisturised, I was quite surprised at the effects of Happy Hippy as I expected a nice scent, a good lather and that would be my money's worth. Not only was my skin left really soft but a subtle citrus scent lingered for a good few hours on my skin as well as in the bathroom.
Overall, I was really pleased with Happy Hippy, I would buy it again but not too often as it is quite expensive, although a little does go a long way. The fresh scent makes it perfect to wake you up in the morning and it leaves your skin feeling amazing. I would definitely recommend Lush's Happy Hippy, it's fresh, summery and leaves you smelling lovely all day.
For Christmas I asked everyone to get me toiletries, as although I didn't really need more, I want to try to save money this year, so thought it would be good to build up a supply! Amongst other things my sister bought me a bottle of Happy Hippy from Lush, which I was really pleased about, as it wasn't one that I had tried.
This is described as a 'mellow yellow hair and body gel with freshly squeezed grapefruits.' I must admit that I've only ever used this as a body wash and never tried it on my hair, so that will be what my review is based on.
The gel comes in a clear bottle with a black flip top cap, and the label is the standard black label with white writing that all Lush products have. There is something a little unusual about the packaging on this one, as unlike any other Lush product (at least as far as I'm aware) it has a picture on it. Down the side of the name, there is a cartoon picture of a hippy wearing red.
The product contains fresh pink grapefruit juice, grapefruit water, grapefruit oil, bergamot oil and frankincense oil amongst other things. That's a lot of grapefruit and I was interested to know if grapefruit is supposed to have any benefits on the skin. Having researched it briefly online (I wont pretend I've done hours of research, I simply did a few Google searches) it seems that it is predominantly used in products for oily skin and acne.
The gel itself is a yellow colour, and quite thick. Obviously as I got it for Christmas I've only been using it for around a month, but I find that the gel seems to have gotten thicker and seems quite jelly like now. I wondered if it could have gone off, but as Lush products are hand made they have expiry dates on them, so I can confirm that my bottle was made on the 15th November last year and won't expire until the 15th Jan next year.
As I say the gel is quite jelly like in consistency - although it seemed smoother when I first began using it - and now when I turn the bottle upside down, the gel all falls to the bottom in one big lump. I do have to use quite a bit of pressure to get the gel out of the bottle, so have found it easier to unscrew the lid completely.
The gel smells absolutely lovely, and I'm sure it wont come as any surprise when I tell you it smells of grapefruit! It's a very strong smell which is quite intense and sharp, but I am a huge lover of anything with a citrus aroma, so I absolutely adore it. It also makes it ideal for either sex as it's neither girly nor masculine.
When it comes to using the gel I find it foams up very easily. I was using it with a shower puff initially and that will give even more froth, but I've started to use it on its own now and it still lathers up very well. It feels quite silky against the skin and the aroma is really strong and almost envelopes you. It's a great one to use in the mornings I find as the scent really gives you a boost and wakes up your senses!
The big surprise with this product was the way it leaves my skin feeling. I don't know why, but I wasn't really expecting it to make much of a difference. In fact, I find my skin feels incredibly soft and smooth and the difference is actually huge. Even my boyfriend asked me what I'd done to make my skin feel so smooth. The scent of the product does linger, on my skin afterwards too, but it's not as strong as I would either like or expect given the intensity of the fragrance when I use it.
The product comes in three sizes - a small 100g bottle, a medium size 250g bottle which is the one I have and then a large 500g bottle. Prices are as follows:
100g - £2.95
250g - £5.80
500g - £9.95
The products can be bought from Lush stores, as you may have seen in the news the Lush website is currently down after being hacked but I presume it will be available again at www.lush.co.uk, although whether I would risk using it again I'm not sure.
On the whole, I found Happy Hippy to be quite a surprising product. It has been around for a long time but never really struck me as being very 'special'. The way it makes my skin feel however, is absolutely amazing, and the scent is lovely and fresh too. I'd have to conclude that this is a great product and I'm sure it is one I will use again in the future.
As a lover of lush products I was happy to receive a bottle of happy hippy shower gel as an early Christmas present and excitedly started using it right away.
The first thing that I noticed with happy hippy is the smell which is very strong as soon as you pop the lid open, with a fantastic tang of grapefruit which actually smells like the fruit (if in a concentrated form) rather than asoap or artificial version of it. The smell permeated my whole showerroom for a good half hour after I left the shower. It is also a fairly gender neutral scent which can be handy. In the evening after showering in the morning I could still detect a faint grapefruit smell on my skin so it has good staying power too.
Unfortunately, after using this shower gel I started to develop a rash around my neck and other sensitve areas which I had washed with the gel. At first I wasn't sure it was down to happy hippy but when I stopped using it the rash cleared up and when I started using it again it came back so I am reasonably sure this was the cause. I have never experiences this with a lush product before so am unsure exactly what the sensitivity is but would recommend to others with sensitive skin to be careful or do a test patch before using.
The bottle is squeezable plastic and it is easy enough to get the product out of. A second downside, however, is that I felt I had to use quite a lot of the product in one go to cover my body. It didn't froth up very well and sometimes I felt I had to use quite a lot of it and work at getting a bit of a lather otherwise it would just have slid uselessly off my body. If a lather was built up unlike some 'novelty' type shower gels I felt this wasn't just about a great scent but was also very effective at doing it's main job-of cleaning your body. It left a clean smooth feeling skin which wasn't dried out (aside from allergic reactions!).
As per usual for lush, this is vegan friendly and not tested on animals. It costs £5.50 for 250g.
I have been a fan of Lush products ever since I found out about them many years ago. Yes, that bit more expensive but sort of worth it. The closest branch of Lush is about 30 miles away from us, but there is also mail order, and since we are over in Edinburgh now and again then I tend to stock up on bits and pieces.
This looks like the Dooyoo picture. Nothing special or fancy, and I could say a bit cheap looking, but also this sort of looks natural and organic, Think of the Body Shop with their simple packaging. The bottle is clear and you can see the light yellow Gel through the bottle and there is a black label wrapped around the bottle. This has a flip top lid which is easy opened even with wet hands, and it's all ok in my eyes.
You can buy this in 3 different bottle sizes. The 100ml is £2.80, the 250ml is £5.50 and the 500ml is £9.60. At least you can have a little try with the 100ml bottle, but as usual the larger the bottle the better the deal.
This is a fresh handmade product. So fresh that it has a Best before date on it - for Shower Gel? Yes, really! It is quite a long date though and would allow you to use this in a long enough time. A little of this Gel does go a long way though, and especially on a Shower Puff. This is a thick Gel as well.
The main scent in here is Grapefruit. It is a fresh and zingy scent and i've used this first thing in the morning when I really didn't want to get out of bed, and although I cannot comment that this made to wide awake and raring, since generally going into a Shower should wake people up anyway, I would say the tangy scent probably did help. This is a nice juicy scent and it doesn't smell fake. It smells just like lots and lots of fresh Grapefruits.
I would recommend this scent if you like Citrus scents. Yes, it is kinda expensive for what it is, but it is a nice cleansing Shower Gel which should wake you up and keep you fresh for the day.
+ Hippy Happy +
Happy hippy is a shower gel from Lush , I got this as part of a gift set that I was given one Christmas and I recently found it sitting in a cupboard in my bathroom so I was excited to try this.
How does it look?
The first thing that you will notice about this little bottle of gel is for sure the colour , BRIGHT yellow!! Looks really intreging to use.
Comes in a small clear plastic bottle (1ooml size) and has the label on the outside with a flip up top and you just squeeze the gel out, I have noticed that lush products packaging is Nothing special but the product that counts!
This smells of grapefruit, it's such a fruity, citrus fresh scent!! Great for your early morning shower when your still half asleep.
Directions for use?
Use as you would with any other shower gel; i usually put it on a lather as it lathers up a lot!! It says it can also be used as a shampoo but i haven't tired this , let me know if you have.
I always recommend lush products so yes. costs around 4pound.
I am a huge fan of Lush and adore their products. I love the fact that for the most part they are natural, fresh and rather unique and whenever I use them it feels like a special experience from the run of the mill stuff I usually use...and me I buy it and keep it as 'special',
This I bought the other day. I was wandering around the store feeling a bit upset my boyfriend had gone back home (we have a long distance relationship at the moment that drives us both insane) and I was looking to buy myself a gift to cheer me up before I drove my poor and long suffering flatmate insane with my dreary music and bad temper!
Calling itself happy hippy, just the title made me smile and so I bought it!
This hair and body gel comes in a see-through plastic bottle and it has a black flip top opening to the top of it concealing a small hole. Around the middle of the bottle there is a black label and on that in white writing I am told that it is Lush 'Fresh Handmade Cosmetics' Happy Hippy 'Mellow yellow hair and body gel with freshly squeezed grapefruits' and that it is 'Just the thing for centralising your aura' and the size is stated (which in my case I picked up the 100g bottle). On the back of the bottle other information given is simply ingredients, being told that it is suitable for Vegans and contact details for Lush are stated. There is also a cartoon picture of the person who is meant to have made the product and the best before date is clearly given (as this is a fresh product). Simple and recyclable packaging once again from Lush!
Light yellow and transparent in colour this is a relatively thickish liquid and you have to really give the bottle a good squeeze to get it out. It has a wonderful and fresh smell of grapefruits to it which isn't too harsh and slightly softened by a sweet undertone to it. It is unisex in its smell and very uplifting...perfect for a wake up call at any time of the day.
All you need is a small amount of this to get a really rich smelling and thick, creamy lather going on. I can shave my bits and bobs with this with ease and it feels slightly hydrating when in use. Due to the smell of this it really does cheer me and wake me up a bit too which is an added bonus!
It rinses off the skin with ease, leaves me feeling clean and fresh and although my skin isn't overly moisturised or anything like that it just simply feels comfortable and normal really. The fragrance lasts a good couple of hours and all round I highly rate this cheery product.
I do not use this on my hair and opt to only ever use a shampoo for my hair that is specifically for my hair type though I will say that when I have got some on my hair (by accident!) it hasn't harmed it any way shape or form!
A nice every-day wake me up shower gel with a gorgeous scent and I'm so happy I found it!

Last Christmas I got a free gift in Lush for spending over a certain amount: this gift was a pre-packaged gift set and it contained a 100ml bottle of the Happy Hippy Shower Gel. I used it recently when I went to Glastonbury (I thought the 'hippy' references might be appropriate!) and have been using it intermittently ever since.
Happy Hippy is Lush's cheapest shower gel. A 100ml bottle costs £2.80, a 250ml bottle is £5.50 and the largest 500ml bottle costs £9.60. The shower gel is based around pink grapefruit, although the colour is more like lime or lemon (Lush do say the fresh pink grapefruit juice used in the product can be a different colour every time, so the hue of each bottle is different). The label also has the distinction of bearing a fun picture of a hippy!
The product also contains grapefruit water, grapefruit oil (that's a lot of grapefruit), frankincense oil and bergamot oil. It is suitable for vegans. Apparently it's a bestseller because it's so cheery and fruity and refreshing.
The product does smell lovely, and very fresh and natural, unlike the artificial fruity scent of some shower gels. It is refreshing and helps to wake me up in the morning. The gel is quite thick in consistency and sometimes disappears back into the bottle when I try and squeeze it out, which can be quite frustrating on occasion! On the plus side this does mean that none of the shower gel gets wasted by squeezing too much out. It lathers well too so you really don't need to use much.
Having said all this, pink grapefruit isn't my favourite scent in the world and the product isn't special or amazing enough to warrant the more expensive price tag. I do normally find that most Lush products are higher quality and make me feel special, justifying their higher price, but I can't say that for Happy Hippy, even though it does smell fresh and natural. It is really popular though, so I must be in a minority, and I bet kids would love it, especially with the fun cartoon hippy on the side.
Overall, I would recommend this if you love citrusy refreshing scents, but if you're not bothered about pink grapefruit, I'd suggest something cheaper. I wish I could give it three and a half stars - I'm going to be generous and give it 4.
I received this Happy Hippy Shower Gel as part of the Lush 'Happy' Gift Box my cousin gave me for my birthday this month. The Lush 'Happy' Gift Box is full of Lush stuff I've not tried before (along with the Happy Hippy Shower Gel, the gift box also contains Bohemian Soap, Lemslip Soap, Sandstone Soap, The Olive Branch Shower Gel and Whoosh Shower Jelly, as well as a 10% off voucher), and so I was looking forward to getting stuck into it. I decided to start with the Happy Hippy Shower Gel.
Lush Happy Hippy Shower Gel is quite a refreshing and fruity shower gel. It's made using freshly squeezed pink grapefruits and I think it has a slight lemony smell to it too, so it's a shower gel that's bound to help wake you up in a morning.
The shower gel has a nice thick-ish consistency, one I'd say perfectly suited to a shower gel (e.g. it doesn't run everywhere when you put it in your hand... though more about that in a minute). The colour can apparently vary slightly due to the fresh pink grapefruits used, however I'd say the bottle I've currently got looks like it could contain lemon curd or something, but it's not off-putting.
Happy Hippy Shower Gel lathers reasonably well and, due to it's lovely consistency, it doesn't take too much to wash yourself with. I wouldn't say that it moisturised my skin, but it didn't dry it out either (which is a good thing). I wouldn't normally choose a citrus-scented product, but I actually do quite like the smell of this shower gel and the scent does linger a bit.
I should at this point note that Happy Hippy Shower Gel is also suitable for washing hair. My hair easily tangles, especially after I've just washed it, but I found that after using Happy Hippy Shower Gel I was easily able to brush my hair without it getting tangled. Bonus! My hair also felt nice & soft afterwards.
Another good thing about this shower gel? It's got the type of scent that suits both men & women, so your bloke can use it too (that's if you're willing to share!).
Now, there is one bad thing about this shower gel and it's one that's common with a number of other Lush products, and that's the packaging. It comes in plastic bottle, but it's not really a squeezable bottle and it can take a bit to get the shower gel out. I find that when I try to squeeze the bottle to get the gel into my hand, the gel comes out but the bottle sucks it back in as soon as I stop trying to squeeze the bottle, which I'm sure you'll agree is just a bit annoying! If Lush could put their shower gels and shampoos into squeezy bottles I'd really appreciate it!
As with other Lush products, this isn't a cheap shower gel, but it is something I recommend treating yourself to every once in a while. A 100g bottle costs £2.80, a 250g bottle costs £5.50 and a 500g bottle costs £9.60. Happy Hippy Shower Gel can be found in Lush high street stores as well as on their website (www.lush.co.uk).
Anyway, all in all this is a lovely Happy Hippy shower gel that's refreshing and smells great (even if you're not a fan of citrus scents). Definitely recommended by me!
