Limited edition Retro shower jelly from Lush

My favourite store, Lush, recently changed their Retro policy to introduce several 'new' products that were discontinued years ago, for a limited time only. The first limited edition Retro products of 2012 included the Party On Shower Jelly.

A shower jelly is like a semi-solid version of a shower gel. It has the texture and consistency of a jelly (hence the name) and can be used at room temperature or kept in the fridge or freezer for a more refreshing wash. Personally, I've only ever used shower jellies at room temperature, as in my house the bathroom is on the second floor while the kitchen is in the basement - I'm not prepared to walk down and up four flights of stairs every time I want a shower! There are a couple of shower jellies in Lush's permanent range, available in two sizes, but this Retro one is only available in the larger 250g size, costing £6.85.

I've only been a Lush fan for a few years, so I don't remember Party On from the first time round. I liked the description on the Lush website: "Open your tub of Party On with caution; the first whiff of its zippy fragrance will have you reaching into the wardrobe for your posh frock and high heels. We've perfumed this bright and breezy jelly with ingredients that blend beautifully together, making a fragrant cocktail to keep you wide awake and ready for fun." The jelly is made from glycerine (used in many soaps) and sodium laureth sulfate - this is a foaming agent and is used in most shower and bath products. Most people are fine with it but it is a known skin irritant and so it's worth being aware of it if you have sensitive skin or eczema.

The 'fun' ingredients in this product include fresh mint infusion, carrageenan extract, lime oil, menthol crystals, rosemary oil and juniperberry oil. These combine to create a fruity, citrusy, minty, invigorating scent. When I received the product in my delivery I was taken aback by the colour - it was a bright yellowy-green which almost glowed in the dark! I really liked the scent as it was strong and in-your-face - the menthol made it smell a bit like a cold remedy, but with added citrus. It was quite fruity too and smelled a bit like a sugary fizzy drink. On the pot, Lush state that "This luminous shower jelly is packed with stimulating essential oils, not calming or balancing or any of that namby-pamby stuff, just a full-on blast of nature's finest attention grabbers". This really made me laugh! The jelly is basically designed to wake you up - either just before a night out, to revive you when you've had a tough day (hence the 'Party On' name), or the morning after, when you need to drag yourself out of bed to get to work! The jelly is packaged, like all the others, in a clear plastic pot made from recycled (and recyclable) materials. It's easy to see exactly how much product you have left, and once you've finally run out you can take the pot back to Lush as part of the "return 5 pots and get a free face mask" offer.

I've used this product several times, sometimes when I've had a bit too much to drink the night before, but mostly when I feel tired on waking up in the morning. My alarm goes off at 6.30 am and it's tough dragging myself out of bed sometimes! The jelly lathers up really well on my shower puff - I just break a small piece off and squash it onto the puff. It cleanses well and rinses off with no problems, just like a normal shower gel. In the shower, the scent of menthol, mint and citrus helps me feel much more awake - it's a really in-your-face scent that's really refreshing and reviving.

Even after I've got out of the shower, the effects of this shower jelly linger. Not only is my mind awake and revived, my skin feels more alive - it's tingling slightly (probably because of the menthol). This product is excellent at making me feel better all over and really waking me up. I think it would be ideal to use if you feel ill - especially if you have a cold. Only a very small amount of this product is needed at any one time, so a tub will last for ages.

Overall, I completely recommend this shower jelly, but you'll have to be quick if you want some as it is limited edition and only available on the Lush website. It's strong and in-your-face and extremely effective at waking me up and making me feel more refreshed and revived.
