Lush Sultana of Soap
Advantages: Exfoliates and nourishes
I have finally got my other half into using Lush, still haven't managed to get him into a store as it apparently smells "too girly" but he is at least using the products! It was recently his birthday and I put together a Lush goodie bag (among other items) for him of the most "manly" fragrances. One of the items I chose was Sultana of Soap due to its complex fragrance.
I had a slice of Sultana of Soap cut for me in the Lush store and it reminded me of nougat, the sort which has plenty of added ingredients in! Sultana of Soap is packed full of dried apricots, sultanas and cranberries which not only add texture but also exfoliant properties. As soon as you smell this soap its quite warm and spicy unlike some more feminine fragrances that Lush produce.
The only reason why I have used this soap was simply because I wanted to see what all the fuss was about as my partner has used it several times and has smelt wonderful! He does like to take care of himself and he even commented that his skin was softer. He has normal type skin so doesn't have to worry about using a moisturiser after use, but he did mention that it was nice to use a product which exfoliates which isn't "girly"!
Sultana of Soap's fragrance comes from olibanum oil (also known as frankincense) and bergamot. This gives the soap quite a deep aroma which does initially remind you of a man's aftershave but slightly sweeter. Olibanum oil has a naturally fresh (lemon hint), woody but sweet aroma, it helps soften the skin and is delicate enough on dry and sensitive skin (ideal for me as a sufferer with eczema). It is also a natural antiseptic making it ideal for people who suffer with spots and blemishes. Bergamot oil is a great citrus based oil which is known for its uplifting properties and is incredibly refreshing due to its floral, light fragrance. Teamed up with olibanum this soap's fragrance manages to calm and sooth the mind.
The dried fruit which is contained in the soap is not just for visual purposes they also provide good exfoliation properties especially as when they are exposed to the air once you have used the soap for a while they tend to go hard, which for some can be annoying as they can be a bit scratchy but for others they do a great job of getting rid of dead skin cells. Lush used dried apricots in Sultana of Soap for their nutritional content as they are rich in beta carotene. Dried currants are a great source of minerals but as I said above they are also mild exfoliants as they are soft and nutritious for the skin the same also goes for the dried cranberries which Lush use.
Sultana of Soap's base of rapeseed oil and coconut oil gives this soap a wonderfully moisturising base which provides an incredibly luxurious, creamy lather which in my opinion is completely wasted on men! The foam is incredibly rich and manages to nourish every single part of your body including those hard to moisturise dry areas.
Sultana of Soap does have quite a masculine scent but it's still very suitable for women as the initial aftershave scent is sweetened by the refreshing bergamot which makes this scent incredibly natural and not synthetic unlike other cosmetic companies.
After using Sultana of Soap I have to admit that even though I would personally prefer a sweeter scent (but not overly sweet) this soap really nourished my skin. I didn't find the dried fruit a problem and my skin was gently exfoliated without being scratched to pieces. After my shower my skin was nourished and felt incredibly soft. It took a while for me to part with the rich lather the soap provides immediately upon touching the sponge! The fragrance did however manage to sooth my mind after a hard day at work and this same mood lifting scent stays on the skin for hours. So yes, may be this soap's scent is more suited for men but its rich, luxurious properties are definitely suited for women!
What Lush say:
"The royalty of soaps.
The creamy fruity one. The Sultana of Soap looks like a big cake of nougat from Brighton Pier. It's soft and creamy, filled full of chopped apricots and currants and scented with spicy olibanum; it's hardly surprising that it looks tempting enough to take a lick."
