Lush Sunny Side Bubble Bar
Advantages: great smell, shimmering bathwater
Disadvantages: glitter glitter everywhere!
Bubble bars are a great deal softer (and less perfectly formed) than the more famous spherical bath ballistics (or 'bombs'), but I've always far preferred them. For a start, I like bubbles in my bath, and I also like the flexibility of being able to use half a bubble bar - plenty, in my opinion! Crumbling just half a bubble bar into the running water of your bath will provide plenty bubbles and (generally) an enveloping but not overwhelming scent.
The first thing to notice about the Sunnyside bar is the glitter - lots of it. In fact, you can't see any of the actual bar, just a solid lump of yellow glitter. And yes, you will end up covered in it! Picking it up in the shop was enough to coat my fingers (and it's clingy glitter!), and crumbling it into the bath was just a recipe for decorating your hand like a christmas card! It does rinse off, thankfully ;) Breaking the bar in half first showed a very unglamorous interior to the glitter mania: the bar underneath is a rather uninspiring yellow ochre colour. It's also a very 'moist' bar - something that makes it very easily crumbled - and containing at least three types of essential oil, I'm not surprised.
Those essential oils making up the scent are sweet orange, lemon and tangerine. Somehow they combine into a very warm citrusy smell - Christmassy! The smell was my main reason for wanting to try this, actually, and if you're unfortunately stuck with just mail order, please don't think this is going to be a sharp citrus smell, like Sandstone soap or Cif! ;) I find a lot of citrus-scented products do remind me of kitchen cleaners, but this isn't one of them. It manages to be warm and soothing, calming and head clearing all at the same time.
Just to bore you further will essential oils, a bit of research into the properties of the three included here confirmed my feelings on the bar anyway: sweet orange oil is "used to create feelings of happiness and warmth"; lemon "improves concentration" (and helps with cellulite, apparently!); and tangerine helps to relieve stress. All perfect traits for a bath - and as all three apparently help aid digestion, perfect for this time of year, too! ;)
Once my bath was run (and I could see through the bubbles!), I was disappointed to see the water looked rather murky. It wasn't until I was in the bath and peering rather myopically into the water that I realised it wasn't 'murk', but rather a shimmery, glittery, iridescent swirl! It was lovely - really hypnotically pretty! I wasn't expecting such attractive bathwater, so bonus!
The only real downside to this product for me was the price - at almost £3 a bar it's just not something I find myself willing to justify more than once in a blue moon (if indeed it remains available outwith the festive period). I sometimes get three or four baths out of a bubble bar, but in this case I 'splurged' and crumbled half of it into the water. I'm glad I did - any less and I think the smell would have been too subtle, and certainly the lovely iridescent swirl in the water would have been diluted. On the other hand, I don't think a full bar would have been necessary (aside: I think if you have hard water in your area, this might be different) - I tend to find too much of the bar leaves me feeling 'soapy' when I get out.
Instead, my skin felt nice and soft, and surprisingly unglittery! I always assumed one would exit a bath such as this looking like... well! Instead I found only a few sparkles had attached themselves to me (on my collarbone, so good placement, too!) and I confess I have mixed feelings about this: really, I'm very pleased to find that you don't have to suffer glitter ending up everywhere (and by that I mean both on towels and sheets, and in more personal places you don't want glitter!). On the other hand, there is a girlie little bit of me that was quite excited by the idea of emerging from the bath as a glittering Venus ;) LOL!
No disappointment with the staying power of the smell. The bathroom was orangey sweet through to the next morning, and a very subtle hint of it remained on my skin. It's just as well that I didn't feel the need of moisturiser, as it would have destroyed the lingering scent.
So... recommended? Totally! The look of Sunnyside is a bit tacky, if I'm being honest - all that glitter it'd be hard not to be! But the bath itself was possibly the most 'luxurious' I've ever felt a bath ballistic to give - and I say that as a huge fan of the product range. The scent appealed to me completely, striking the right balance between fresh and cosy. I'm not really surprised there's a slight premium on the price for this one, but I'd love to see a non-glittered version below the £2 mark, making it a more cost-effective luxury :)
Half stars off for price and an overdose of glitter on the outside, otherwise I loved this!
