Being a GEL, as opposed to a cream cleanser, Lynx Shower Gel is suitable for the average man’s skin. (Shower CREAMS are more suited to those with dry skin.)
Perhaps influenced too much by the advertising, I thought the smell of Lynx Africa was seductively masculine, and for the 10 years that I worked in a female dominated work environment, I used it in the shower every weekday morning, followed by the matching anti-perspirant. I believe I had a good working relationship with my female colleagues, but it never went further than that.
My wife was pleased that, unlike some other colourful shower gels (this one is green) it did not leave its colour behind in the shower. However, she did not think the fragrance any more attractive than some of the cheaper shower gels that I have tried.
The manufacturers (Unilever) say, “The classic fragrance is an exotic mixture of warm African spices and aromas, designed to keep you cool in the hottest situations.”
As a keen gardener, the fragrance makes me think of seasoned compost. No not the sort you find in a rotting compost heap – rather the sort of aroma I experience when using shop bought compost to plant a wide variety of my garden herbs. The sort of “cleaned-up” compost my wife wouldn’t mind me growing things in on our kitchen windowsill.
I would find the brand name Lynx a bit off-putting, if I did not associate it with those sexy adverts. Lynx Africa does not smell like any cat (big or small) that I know of – and neither to I!
Lynx shower gel is often more expensive than a lot of other shower gels. Its undiscounted price seems to be about £2.50 for 250ml. However, I have seen some good offers recently.
It was especially good to see it in 99p Stores on my last visit.
If tempted to buy Lynx toiletries for the man/men in your life, you may well find it better value to buy in a discount shop like this, even if you decide to splash out on a 99p toiletries bag to put it in, instead of the throw away cupboard box that comes with ready packaged gifts. Also I prefer the anti-perspirant to the body spray that comes in a lot of gift sets, so it would be a way of getting me exactly what I like.
I have found that the Lynx Africa shower gel has a pleasant masculine smell, is an effective cleanser, and the fragrance lasts longer than some cheaper shower gels. However, I think it is over-hyped and overpriced if not on special offer.
I give it five out of five stars if bought on offer for about £1.
It's been a long time since I used any Lynx products - through school and college they were a staple in our house, but they discontinued my favourite one (anyone remember Lynx Tempest?) and I just seemed to grow out of them.
I've tried the shower gel before and been fairly happy with it, but I prefer moisturising shower gel like dove these days. Anyway, I was recently caught without anything else but this stuff, so this 'spare' was brought into play.
It's a tall, slim oval shaped bottle with a slight taper. It's made of black plastic with a black plastic lid - similar to the stock photo but mine is the 'XL' bottle with a different top section, grey/silver push release as a cap.
The shape is easy enough to handle, but the curved top section makes it near impossible to stand on its head (you know, when you get near the end you leave it turned it upside down).
The gel is nothing like I remember - instead of quite a watery, flowing liquid it's very thick and very gooey, and quite uncomfortable to spread about as well to be fair, even with my Lynx ManWasher sponge thing (don't ask - X-mas gift!).
The last time I used this fragrance shower gel, it was red. It's now green! I can't find reference to them changing it, but I'm almost certain they have. I suspect that's when the quality changed too.
I must admit I quite like the smell of it. This is miles away from any of the other Lynx fragrances, being quite sweet as well as masculine. I've had a go of the Chocolate one and it's sickly sweet, this one is a bit more of a tangy, almost citrus sweet.
The smell doesn't stay on my skin for very long, which I was disappointed with. I would have hoped a Lynx product would have had a bit of life, lingering a while after drying off.
Simple enough, do I need to tell you? Ok, spread the gel about yourself, get it into a bit of a lather then rinse it off.
As above, the gel is a bit thick for my liking. It comes out of the bottle easily enough but isn't comfortable to spread about and tends to settle in blobs when applied directly. When used with a sponge (sorry, ManWasher!) it's marginally better, but still takes a bit of work.
Rinsing is fine, it comes off without any trouble and doesn't leave any slimy bits. One blast over with the shower head and it's done with.
Frankly I'm a bit disappointed.
It's not rubbish by any means, and was great value for money considering the bottle size, but it's just not as good as others on the market in my opinion. Dove and Gillette both do similar products which are much nicer to use and keep me feeling (and smelling) clean for ages afterwards.
If the smell lingered a while and the gel was a bit thinner then I'd be a happy camper, but after this bottle is done and dusted I will be unlikely to buy another.
Price and availability:
Usually a 250ml bottle of this is £2/£2.50. This XL bottle (400ml) was reduced to £2 in ASDA which is the only reason I gave it a whirl. Good value, but in my opinion a sub-standard product.
Not for me.
That isn't a reflection on Lynx products in general, for the most part I think they are good quality, but this new formula 'Africa' isn't going to be a regular in our bathroom.
The last Lynx product I tried was the 'Recover' shower gel which I recommend heartily, so don't take this review as me being negative on the brand.
Lynx: Africa shower gel came tearing into my bathroom with promises of 'Evoking my wildest instincts', and preparing me for 'My next exotic adventure'. I wasn't entirely sure what they meant by this, but it sure did sound important so I decided I better give it a go.
To be honest I probably wouldn't have given Lynx: Africa a shot if not for the fact that I managed to snag the bottle for a measly 90p. It's packaged in a Lynx standard black bottle with Red and Green claw slashes behind the popular logo. I think this is supposed to have a more vibrant effect on the eyes than it did, but I found it quite bland to be honest. As with most Lynx gels the bottle features small grooves that prevent it from slipping, and an easy to click lid that permits access to the mysteries inside.
Lynx: Africa is a sharp green shower gel with a look and consistency reminiscent of fairy liquid. It gives off a very slight soapy fragrance with just a hint of Lavender. If I'm honest it's a nice enough smell, but is just too faint to really impact your bathing experience. Although credit should be given for the fact that after drying myself up I could detect pleasant traces of the odour on my skin.
All of the standard Lynx bonuses are in place with Africa. It produces a rich foamy lather on a body scrub that enables you to cover your entire body with a small portion of the gel. I will give kudos to the fact that this particular gel keeps a decent lather when applied directly to your hands. It's still can't compete with using a body scrub, but shower fans everywhere will likely find this the Lynx gel with the longest lifespan.
Once the bath was completed I have found the after effects to be very mixed. My skin does feel softer; and a little springier, whenever I use this gel. Unfortunately there have been many occasions where the gel has left my skin feeling a little on the dry side.
With an RRP of £3 for a standard 250ml bottle this may be an expensive proposition. A larger bottle is available for just 6p more, but I can't imagine buying something this average in bulk. If you can find it in an offer without the rest of the Lynx range then I suppose you could do worse, but otherwise I'd recommend sticking with some of the other Lynx gels.
Still checking in with Vicky to see if the 'Lynx Effect' has taken hold yet. She replied "Carl, the smell's not even that great!" I think that's a good sign.
I recently bought 3 packs of Lynx Africa, all in the new pack style. The contents seem to be quite different from my old style packs, the colour is a lot lighter and the smell is very weak and not at all like the last packs. I noticed the same thing about the latest deoderant cans as well. I contacted Unilever and they asked for the batch numbers etc, then sent me a couple of vouchers. I used to like the Africa smell but not anymore!
I have been given a lot of Lynx gift packs over the years, ever since I reached puberty. Never a year goes by without me receiving a present of Lynx shower gel, deodorant or body sprays of some kind or another. One of the better smelling ones I think though is the Africa range. I first used this about eight years ago and my other half used to love me wearing the body spray and deodorant when we were courting.
The shower gels in this range are now selling at my Home Bargains store for just 99p each and so I have stocked up on a few. They come in a nice masculine black bottle with grips at the side so you don't manage to let it slip when you are in the shower and it's wet. The lid flips off and is strong and clips back down with a nice firm close mechanism. I love the smell of this shower gel and so does my other half. You only need a small bit to get a great lather and it rinses off well and easily and leaves no sticky residue on my body. It smells of spice and woody hints and is not feminine at all so no chance of my other half nicking any. Makes the bottom of the shower slippy though so beware.
I also use it on my hair and on my beard. I have a full facial beard which I occasionally let grow very long and I have a lot of body hair including my back and shoulders. In fact, I think you could safely say I am hairier than the average man but I like to use the Lynx shower gel in my beard as it really gets it nice and clean then I brush it through afterwards - or my little lad does. It moisturises my skin and make sit feel soft and clean and it does not irritate at all or cause me itching. Its a good decent price and I use the doedorant too to make the smell more intense if I am trying to impress my other half.
Good offer at the moment and throughly recommended by me. ..
Lynx is the deodorant and shower gel of choice for many men. Lynx Africa is my personal favourite and is one of the longest standing products in the Lynx range. It smells great and my fiance loves it (which is always a good sign!).
The shower gel bottle is beautifully designed with the intention of making it easier to grip when your in the shower. I like this aspect of the bottle although I don't partically carry it with me in the shower - its nice to know its there.
Unlike some of the other shower product in the Lynx range Africa is smooth to put on and creates a good lather. It is quite a strong scent and last all day which is what I look for in a good shower gel. Coupled with using the spray on deodorant you will be smelling good all day. You do feel great after you have used it and you feel fresh and revitalised.
There arn't many negative points really that I can think of. Maybe the bottle is too thin but this is nit picking really.
Shower gels can occasionally be a bit like mens aftershave; better than the female alternative! I love this Lynx AFRICA shower gel. I actually buy it for my son, but occasionally I have used it myself (admittedly its normally if i have run out of my favourite shower cream). I really love the fragrance and it's usually the only one i buy for my young son. It's a pity it can't be used on hair (or not supposed to be!); though when my son is in the bath i remind him to wash his hair and I am convinced he is using this gel to wash his hair with! I usually end up re washing his hair in any case as he never seems to rinse it!
I like the bottle that Lynx gels come in and this Africa one looks good. I get the standard size 250g bottle, which can, on on occasions, be found on special offers such as BOGOF. The bottle is your usual shower gel/cream shape; its black with the word LYNX printed down the centre of the bottle. On either side of the letters L and Y on the bottle are green and red sort of stripes. They remind me of an African Zulu warriors shield; It looks good actually and underneath the LYNX logo is the word AFRICA printed in green. On the back of the bottle the product speaks of users having 'exotic adventure' and of evoking 'your wild instincts'! That is overdoing the sell a little bit, but quite humorous all the same!
There are plenty of different types of flavour of Lynx shower gel around and its probably worth trying them all out to see which ones you like though i'd leave this until they are on special offer.
The only problem with so many fragrances, gels, soaps etc is that there do not seem to be that many which are hypo-allergenic/non perfumed; (not that i search for these, so there may be more out there than are known to me) ; but then i expect it would be really difficult to maybe get the the wonderful aromas that are around in many of the products which are available without the perfume in them. In saying that this Lynx does state that he has been dermatologically tested; but again it contains 'parfum'. I guess it could be a case of trying it out and see how you get on re any rashes etc, depending on how bad your allergy/skin condition might be. I have alot of empathy for anyone who has skin conditions and allergies which may mean they just cannot used perfumes products. Fortunately, its not often i get allergies to soaps/perfumes etc, although it does happen occasionally.
At the moment i don't think the Lynx Africa gel is on special offer anywhere and at its usual price i wouldn't say it was cheap at around £2.35 per bottle. However, Asda currently have some Lynx shower gels (250ml bottles) on great offers at the moment for only £1.00. So they are definitely worth checking out.
What i usually do is try to stock up whenever i see special offers on items such as this. Its well worth doing that as it won't go out of date and at the end of the day you'll save yourself a fair bit of money. However, this gel really is lovely; its smooth and soft on the skin (i am not keen on shower gels that feel like sandpaper, the exfoliating ones!); also the fragrance lasts; very refreshing indeed! Highly recommend mainly to males but girls, if you havn't done so as yet, why not give it a try (or borrow a bit from your partner or your son!)
I have used this shower gel as it is a very masculine and lovely-smelling one. If it had a somewhat more interesting texture such as the Imperial Leather Foamburst range then it'd be just perfect and I'd use it all the time. Instead it has quite a common texture of a thick gel. This one doesn't have any little bits in it either like some of the other Lynx shower gels. Mind you I think these little bits are just a bit pointless and unnecessary.
The shower gel comes in a black plastic bottle, which has pretty good grip on it. It has little bumps over a nicely designed part for your fingers to fit along. Your fingers actually sit in the ridges on the side of the bottle and with the bumps, there's no letting go of this in the shower! This really helps as when it gets slippery, I usually drop my shower gels by accident but the risks are greatly reduced with this.
The lid pops up to reveal a decent size hole where the shower gel flows out. The gel has quite a nice thick consistency and has a pretty clear colour. It has a wonderful smell, which resembles the exact smell of the Africa Deodorant Spray and the Africa aftershave. It's a very attractive smell for both men and women! It's slightly woody and a bit spicy and seems quite a 'dark' smell. It's not very potent but seems to be quite long-lasting and you will certainly smell of it when you come out the shower.
The shower gel is lovely to use and the most masculine one I have ever used as opposed to more unisex ones. It bubbles up quite nicely and you don't need to use much thanks to the thick consistency. A bottle of this will set you back over £2 but should last a good month if you don't use too much, so it's not that bad for such a lovely shower gel. I'd certainly recommend trying this one as it's my favourite in the Lynx range!
Thanks for reading!
I find this Lynx show gel to be the best of the range. The smell is the strongest and the longest lasting out of the range. The bottle is all black which is quite basic, but it is effective with the green and red stripes across the front.
The simple flip open top is easy to open, but makes it hard to empty the bottle when it is near to empty. The logo is displayed vertically on the front, which is effective as there would not be much room horizontally.
The colour of the gel is orange which matches the orange strips over the front. There is a modern feel to the gel, making it attractive to a wide range of people.
Yeah, Lynx does cost a little more than other gels, currently around £1.20, but I feel this to be the best gel and is worth paying that little extra.
I would recommend this shower gel to anyone wanting a reasonable priced shower gel with a smell that last a while.
Lynx Africa shower gel
If I remember correctly the Lynx Africa Deodorant was the first ever deodorant I have ever used and I have to say I love it since them. So of course I was very happy to learn that they have also a shower gel!
Well who doesn't take a shower these days and doesn't use shower gel? Well I hope everybody does and I love the shower gels of Lynx and with most shower gels I just know you can't really go wrong with lynx. I like the look of the bottles and normally they have a really nice smell and are nice and fresh. When I was younger we always had Lynx, so it must be why I am positive about them.
All the bottles of Lynx shower gel have the same shape, it's only the colour that separates them from each other. The Lynx Africa shower gel has a black colour, with a few stripes and the brand name and product name. It doesn't really make it stand out from the rest of the shower gels. Lynx has bright orange and blue coloured shower gels, which look much better.
The bottle is not transparent, which most of the Lynx shower gels are. The shower gel is actually red. The bottle itself is really nice and flat on the bottom, but the sides are designed that your fingers fits right into it. This way you have a firm grip when you are in the shower. Quiet handy actually.
The shower gel is quite thick, but easy to get out of the bottle and to wash it off in the end. The scent is really nice. The scent is what I really enjoy about this product. It's fresh, but not like menthol, but more softer like the smell of fruit. It's certainly not a heavy smell like the smell of whiskey, but you can definitely smell it when you put it on. It's quiet out there but after a minute you don't really notice it anymore.
I like this shower gel and it gives me a nice feeling in the morning with the freshness. The shower gel smells nice but also important it really gives me a clean feeling. It doesn't make my skin dry and the shower gel is easy to wash off. I do like the Lynx shower gels although I do think other shower gels of this brand stand out more then the Africa shower gel. I love the Shock version, which has just a little bit fresher scent to it.
Lynx Africa Shower Gel
I love buying nice shower gels and my bathroom has quite a lots of choices of them and so does my partners side of the bathroom shelves as I also like to buy nice scented bathroom shower gels for him too.
Theres nothing beter than having a good choice of products to pick depending on your mood you can choose different scents to wash with.
There's nothing better than finding a nice scented shower gel and Lynx Africa Shower Gel is quite a nice one. I like the Lynx products as they are good quality and the scent isn't too overpowering, which with a lot of mens products you get an overpowering scent which can irritate your nose. Mind you most of the adverts on television for the Lynx products do over rate the scent of the product as yet no women have run down the street after my bloke, much to his disapointment.
Lynx Africa Shower Gel can be bought in most chemists, supermarkets and I have found it in the poundshop, so you can pay from £1 up to £1.89 for this product so it's good to shop around. I love it when I find a good named product in the pound shop, it makes my bargain hunting all the more worthwhile
The shower gel bottle is black with the Lynx logo on the front, like all the Lynx products and you get 400ml of shower gel in the bottle, it has a flip up lid for easy use, less spills and all you need is a small amount of shower gel on your sponge, body puffer or loofah depending on what you use.
The gel quickly turns from a thick gel into rich creamy lather, my partner loves it as he says it not only gets you clean but the scent is good and it lingers on the skin for quite a while after using it. He likes it so I am quite happy to buy it for him when I go shopping.
Lynx Africa Shower Gel is quite a good choice if your man likes the scent of it as it does the job well, lasts for a while as you only need a small amount everytime you use it and for value for money its on a par with most other shower gels.
8 out of 10 from me
The first thing that catches my eye about this product is the cool looking shower gel bottle. Nothing else like I have seen for other brands, which is a marketing plan I imagine, but with a useful handgrip on the left hand side of the bottle which makes it easy to hold, especially with wet hands for when you are in the bath or shower.
Opening the bottle is very easy as there is a small space under the cap, the grey bit at the top of the bottle (see picture) which allows you to get your thumb under the edge of the cap and flick it up.
The gel is consistent with other gels of having the same consistency with it being relatively thick. The gel is reddish in colour and smells similar to africa deodrant by lynx should you have smelt this before. The fragrance is quite a sweet, fruity smell, but has a lingering bitterness which makes the fragrance suitably masculine. When the gel is 'mixed' with hot water, you get lots of bubbly foam, with it still maintaining lots of the strong scented smell.
Application to the skin and hair is easy to rinse out under hot water, and leaves a lingering scent on the body. The smell usually lasts a few hours, with it not being too strong so it is obviously noticeable. After the fragrance has worn off, you are still left feeling fresh and clean for a least a couple more hours!
The lynx shower gels can be a bit more money than your average shower gels, but occasionally, they are put on promotion which tends to be the best time to buy them.
Africa is a Lynx smell that I love. I don't (often) use it myself, as I am a woman; however my dad, brother and boyfriend have all been known to buy this particular fragrance.
The thing I like about this product is that the smell transcends age groups and I would be willing to buy this product for any male member of the family. I think this is a fool proof purchase for any man and you can't say that about many male grooming products.
I have used this shower gel on the odd occasion and I think the consistency is good. It doesn't just slide off the body and a little bit goes a long way. However the smell is very masculine, so unless you want to smell like you bloke you should probably stay away from this!
The smell itself is warm, exotic and masculine. I would also say that there are earthy and woody undertones. You can also smell it around the house when this is being used in the shower, I think that the scents within the gel must mix with the steam because it seems to travel. You can also smell it after your man has showered and dried, it lingers for a good few hours afterwards.
The bottle is jet black and plastic; it comes with a red and green Africa logo on it. The bottle goes in slightly at the middle - I think this is a good aspect of the design, because it means that it is easy to hold in the shower.
This gel usually sells for around £2.99, however it can often be picked up on offer and it can be found in a box set (along with the Africa body spray) throughout the festive period. From a woman's perspective I think this would be a great stocking filler for any man in the family. And if you see it on offer in Tesco's then you should pick a bottle up for your man - the smell is lovely!
I love my shower gels, and have got plenty of them. This Lynx product is called 'Africa' and according to the manufacturer - The revitalising formula contains the classic Africa fragrance, with its warm, sensual and spicy notes. This is one of Lynx's signature fragrances and also one of my favourite.
The squeezy bottle is a standard Lynx design. It is black with the trademark African colours of Red/Green. The liquid itself is a pinky/red colour and smells beautiful. It has a wavey design and some indents that act as finger grips to stop it becoming too slippery when using in the shower.
Like most Lynx shower gels, it leaves a scent lingering in the bathroom and on your body for a couple of hours. This smell is quite sensual and should be used as a kind of 'posh' every-day scent. It seems it's not quite special enough for those special occasions but not common enough to be used every day. This smell suits everyone and has a general 'clean feel' about it, which is surely the primary aim of a shower gel? What I really like about this scent is how recognizable it is, and even though many people can identify the smell, it is still pleasant enough to be enjoyed.
RRP is around £2.99 a bottle, but often in Boots/Asda and other high street supermarkets you will find BOGOFs and 3-4-2 deals.
When it comes to choosing men's toiletries my husband is very laid back about the whole process. he likes to smell good but tends to stick to the same deodorants and toiletries that he has used for ages. There is nothing wrong with this but every now and again I like to gently suggest that maybe he should try a new fragrance or brand. He usually just says well have a smell next time you go shopping and surprise me. which can also be interpreted as I cant be bothered to choose myself so as long as you like it then ill wear it!!!!
Last month after a good browsing session around the men's deodorant and toiletry isle I came across lynx Africa shower gel. This is what I thought.:
The packaging is very masculine and minimalist. I would say the shape of the bottle is more impressive than the actual logo. I love the way the bottle nips in half way up in order for the user to be able to maintain a good grip of the product in the shower. It also has ridges going up both sides of the bottle I think this is to stop it slipping out of your wet hands when showering. The bottle itself is black plastic (great for recycling). the front of the bottle has the word lynx going vertically up the bottle. There are then just three stripes through the lettering in red and green colours. The packaging hardly screams out exciting but to me I think it represents in its simplicity its masculinity and I found this quite sexy.
The smell is so sexy and very masculine. It is quite heavy and smells both sensual and quite exotic. there is a hint of fruitiness to the scent but its also quite earthy and woody also. The main thing about the smell as far as Jim concerned is it is gorgeous and
when my hubby is showering, the aroma of this shower gel fills the whole of the upstairs. The scent also lingers on his skin and I can catch a waft for a couple of hours after he's used it.
The gel is red in colour and quite thin in texture. My husband sometimes suffers from dry skin on his elbows and he has definitely seen a marked improvement from using this over the last month. He tells me that it is also quite gentle on the skin and not at all irritating or harsh. He also uses this gel on his hair and says that it leaves his hair feeling really clean. You also only need to put a small drizzle on the sponge to get a good lather with this gel. Which means that it has lasted him the month and there is still a bit left. ( and he showers every day).
In conclusion I would say that I am glad I bought this for my hubby, It is gorgeous smelling and leaves him feeling fresh and clean. So we are both really happy with this product and I would certainly recommend it.
Revitalising gel for hair and body
