I have been wearing Dot by Marc Jacobs for a number of months now and it is by far one of my favourite perfumes. I received it in a gift box for my birthday and included was a tube of this delightful shower gel in the same fragrance.
The scent is described as, "a cheerful fragrance with top notes of red berries combined with pitaya fruit (dragon fruit) followed by honeysuckle, jasmine and orange blossom while a base closes with a trail of coconut water, vanilla, driftwood and sensual musk." I absolutely adore the smell, it's fruity but has a lovely end note of musk so it's not too sickly sweet or overpowering.
It was was launched in the spring of 2012 by Marc Jacobs so is a fairly new fragrance but definitely a well made and good quality one.
Firstly, the packaging of this shower gel is amazing. It comes in a red tube with lots if black dots all over it. It is made to look like a ladybird and looks amazingly chic and stylish in my opinion. There is a black lid at the top of the squeezy bottle.
The shower gel itself is wonderfully thick and luxurious and a real treat to shower in. The liquid lathers up well and really does cling to my skin and nourish it. Afterwards my skin and body smells wonderfully perfumed and the fragrance does last for quite a while afterwards. This is such a lovely shower gel and one I definitely recommend.
When I received my Marc Jacobs Dot gift set at Christmas I was absolutely in awe of the stunning spotty packaging - having a penchant for ladybirds this design just had to appeal to me, not only that but it looks stunning in my bathroom as a quirky change from the pinks and purples of the majority of my cosmetics. In the gift set was a bottle of the fabulous Dot perfume (obviously), a tube of body lotion (useless!) and a matching tube of shower gel - which is the subject of this review.
Packaging first. I can't do it justice with words so scroll up and have a look at this bright and cheerful shower gel tube, it's so simple but absolutely brilliant in my opinion and I'm actually sad that I've almost finished the shower gel as I won't have this little splash of colour in my bathroom for much longer! The tube works well as it's nice and pliable, the shower gel is dispensed smoothly and easily regardless of how much is left in the tube while the lid screws on tightly to ensure no gel escapes while it's being stored. I must say here that the full size version of Dot shower gel features a flip top lid, which is an infinitely better design than the lid on my 75ml gift set tube - a top which can be completely removed is a silly design for a shower gel as the slightest bit of slipperiness on my hands leads me to drop it and then I have to go on a lid hunt around my feet in the shower tray, not ideal!
The fragrance of the shower gel is gorgeous, my only complaint really being that it doesn't linger for long on my skin after I've rinsed and dried myself off. It kind of clouds around me while I'm showering and fills the bathroom with a glorious floral fragrance, but afterwards I have to really sniff my skin to get a whiff of Dot and even when I apply the perfume I don't seem to get any layering effect which is a bit of a pain as I'm very into layering my fragrances at the moment. I do love the smell of this shower gel though (longevity issues notwithstanding) as it smells so similar to the Dot perfume only in a more delicate way; it's gorgeous with rich florals and an undercurrent of sweetness, slightly fruity with a distinct yet mellow hint of coconut which comes through towards the end of my washing cycle. So beautiful that it angers me slightly when I can't smell it after my shower has finished!
As a shower gel it's fine, not as special as the fragrance or price tag would lead you to believe but there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. It lathers up nicely with a little perseverance (use a body puff for maximum lather with this one) producing a relatively strong foam which feels soft and luxurious on my skin. Oh, it doesn't feel amazingly luxurious but is a step up from the (still lovely!) sensation of using a more everyday priced shower gel such as Carex or Original Source - the problem with the lather is that it doesn't last long, it's strong as I'm washing but gets to the point where the bubbles are disappearing so rapidly you can practically feel them popping on your skin! This is disappointing as I like to wash as I'm allowing my conditioner to soak into my hair, so like a nice layer of foam to last for at least three minutes - sadly this one doesn't, I'd guesstimate the bubbles last for one minute max once you've washed and while this might sound a pathetic point to make it still stands that the lather doesn't last long...!
I always feel nice and clean after showering using Dot, I'm not a particularly dirty person anyway (in hygiene terms that is...) but this shower gel definitely removes any grime I've picked up since my last shower, usually twelve hours earlier. When I helped Mark in the garden recently I had visible dirt on my hands and arms; obviously I immediately stopped helping and went for a shower when I noticed this unfortunate side effect of 'gardening', using Dot and my loyal S&G shower puff my skin was pink and clean again in no time - and I haven't helping in the garden since! It doesn't do ANYTHING for the condition of my skin - it's not moisturising in the slightest, but neither is it a drying shower gel despite the reasonably high level of perfume. I wouldn't say my skin felt softer, but I don't have to reach for the body lotion as soon as I've toweled myself dry either. It's just kinda middle of the road, but again (considering the price) I'd expect better.
Do I recommend it? That's the question I've been asking myself while writing this review, and I'd say yes I would. I don't for one minute think it justifies it's £20 price tag (150ml tube) but if you get a chance to try it in a gift set then I'd say it's absolutely worth using - a 50ml bottle of Dot perfume costs around £42 at the moment, with the gift set being available for just £8 more so I'd say buy the set and try both the shower gel and body lotion at a fraction of the price. I won't buy a full size tube as gorgeous smell aside, this is no better really than any other shower gel I buy costing less than a fiver - I've a birthday coming up however so might add another gift set to my list as I'm running low on Dot perfume anyway, so I doubt this is the last my skin has heard of the shower gel.
