I initially bought this body wash as a gift for my husband as I had heard good things about it and thought it would make a nice present but we ended up both using it in the shower as I really liked the smell on him, and me in the end it turns out.
Molton Brown has been one of my favourite shops for a long time as they have some amazing products with equally amazing and different smells than you can't find anywhere else. Their products are expensive, yes, but they are such good quality and generally are something I like to buy as a gift for people. Talking about different smells, this is a really different and interesting smell and nothing I have smelt before when it comes to body washes.
According to Molton Brown, "In 2002 our much-loved hero, Re-charge Black Pepper Bodywash, was launched. It became an instant bestseller, going on to win award after award." The black pepper body wash is described as a body wash which fires up the senses in an instant, it is hot, spicy and rousing. The ingredients are listed as black peppercorn, earthy oak moss and bergamot.
When they say, they definitely mean hot as, oh boy, is hot hot hot. You know how black pepper is hot and makes you sneeze because it's really strong, well this is exactly how this body wash is. I loved the smell initially in the bottle when I tested it out, it's really strong and very manly and lovely and bold in my opinion. Then, when I first tried it in the shower it made me sneeze as I used quite a bit of it to lather up my body with. It's funny because the shower gel really brings my skin alive with the boldness and its a wonderful smell to use in the morning time.
The body wash comes in gel form and has a really nice consistency to it, not too thick but not thin at all. It really coats your skin when you apply it and nourishes it with a lovely smell added to your skin as you use it. Black peppercorns oil is said to be rich in antioxidants and so this body wash is also good for your skin and mine definitely feels very soft after use.
Like I've said above Molton Brown is quite expensive. A 300ml bottle of this body wash costs £18 which is probably not something I would normally purchase for everyday use but for a gift I thought it was well worth it and we love the fragrance.
Molton Brown products are I find a bit hit and miss for me, especially considering how expensive some of the products are, I do however love their shower gels and have tried most of them over the tears. This is by far the one that I have disliked the most. The shower gel comes in a clear plastic bottle with a silver screw top that is easy to use and does not leak. The shower gels usually come in 300ml bottles and are priced around £18 each.
This body wash it very manly smelling, it is a spicy scent that is very overpowering and smells heavily of pepper, bergamot and oakmoss. It is an orangey brown colour and is fairly like in consistency, like all of the Molton Brown shower gels. It is designed to fire up your senses, which it really does do.
I tried this shower gel as part of a gift set and only had a small bottle of 30 ml to use, but on first use I found it way to strong in scent and too manly smelling, it did wash my skin well and washed off well, but when I came out of the shower I felt like I had used my husbands shower gel, so I gave the remaining gel to him and he seems to really like it. You only need a small amount of the shower gel to get a good lather going and it did clean my skin well.
Overall, although I do love Molton Brown shower gels and body washes, this was not for me, the scent was too overpowering and I will not be using it again. I would however, recommend this to men who love spicy fiery shower gels.
I first discovered Molton Brown around 12 months ago when I was hovering around John Lewis in the Trafford Centre. They have several samples on display and after testing around 10 differt types I decided to buy the Black Pepper Re-Charge Bodywash (and also the Active Cassia Body Scrub which is amazing too).
First time I rubbed it on my arm in the shop I wasn't instantly sure of it at first. However, the assistant behind the counter told me it was on of their biggest selling lines of Molton Brown and I've often heard about people loving the Black Pepper flavour in the past. By the time I had finished shopping and was sat in my car preparing to drive back I could still smell the scent of this bodywash on my arm and it had smelt much better than when I first applyed it. Although i'm totally aware that you actually need water for it to have its true effect.
The body wash comes in a very cool 300ml bottle, and the term "a little goes a long way" definatly applies to Molton Brown products. The scent of the product is very 'spicy', and it has that warming feeling that most 'spicy' products have. Therfore it is a perfect body wash for those cold winter months.
Only a small amount is needed when in use. The gel builds up into a lovely thick lather and you can instant get a burst of that spice feeling. You can still smell the scent on your body several hours after showering it. I only shower and don't bath so can't tell you what its like to use as a bath wash but I can imagine it will be lovely.
Buying this has totally converted me to the Molton Brown brand and I have tried several of their products since then. If you want to buy a luxury product, maybe as a gift for a man (anyone else find men particularly hard to buy for) then I guarentee that they will love it. Maybe you'll be just like me and treat yourself to this wonderful product.
I was first drawn to this product when I saw it as a top seller on another website. Once I read the discription of the product, I just had to try it for myself!
I must say the first thing that I noticed prior to placing my order was that the price was quite expensive for just a body wash, but I am the sort of person to give things a try (at least once ) before deciding if it's value for money or not.
When it arrived a couple of days later, my first impression was that the bottle looks quite nice and I wouldn't mind leaving this on the bathroom shelf. I have since become a big fan of Molton Brown.
I first used the product the next morning. Waking up still tired as usual I had my shower and was pleasantly surprised. I found that just a little bit of the thick gel was enough to lather up my whole body. Not only that, but the aroma really did feel like it was waking me up.
The lather rinses off really easily (unlike some of the cheaper one's) and leaves the skin feeling and smelling really fresh without any irritation. When you open the bathroom door, the aroma escapes leaving the house smelling really nice too!
On the downside as someone who regularly uses the gym, I found that it did not really do much for my muscles. The product claims to boost circulation but I found no evidence of this.
Overall I would say that this is an excellent body wash and would recommend it to anyone who can comfortably afford it. A little bit goes a long way so the bottle really does last a good few weeks.
Well actually words fail me when trying to truly describe the aroma that this product has.....all I can say is WAW.
As a busy NHS nurse, by the end of your hectic and non-stop shift the thought of coming home to a warm and relaxing bath with Molton Brown's Re-Charge Black Pepper bodywash is just simply a joy.
On many occasions, I come in from being on duty, run my bath, make a quick cuppa and then relax in the luxury of this product which affords me the benefits of relaxing me, easing all the tension and strain in my muscles without making me drowsy.
The extra benefits are it is also great following a gym workout. It really soothes my aching muscles and leaves me feeling truly refreshed. It also acts as an excellent room freshener as the aroma lingers for ages
Many say that there is somewhat of a male fragrance to this product, but in my opinion it is very unisex and not male specific so we can all enjoy it.
This product comes not only in a 300ml bodywash but now comes in a 50ml Eau de Toilette - great my next purchase on pay day!
I must admit Molton Brown is an indulgance I thoroughly enjoy but seldom go out of my way to buy.
This black pepper bodywash is warming and invigorating, lathers well and leaves a warm spicy masculine aroma for a good few hours but won't last much longer than this. To eek out a few more hours of smelling sweet you have to use the full range and with Molton Browns eau de toilet at £35, soap bar at £15 and body lotion at £15 this can get expensive and since both my wife and mother as well as 2 neices all enjoy their own favourite Molton Brown products after buying these for them now and again I get reluctant to buy this for myself. I do receive some now and again as gifts from them in return though.
This body wash will last a good long while however as will all Molton Brown products, very seldom will you ever get a bargain price on any Molton Brown product though, the Molton Brown stores never seem to have any promotions or discounts, never a 10% off day and the best you will ever seem to get is free small testers now and again and mainly only if they have a new fragrance to promote.
You can't even get a bargain on Ebay, you will possibly save 50p on the retail price but thats as good as it gets.
A cheaper alternative to Molton Brown that I've found is Pecksniff's range of body wash products, very similar even down to the packaging but what starts at £15 a bottle will go for half that on Ebay.
But my biggest complaint about Molton Browns Black Pepper Bodywash is nothing whatsoever to do with is quality or fragrange but that showering regularly with it discolours white shower grouting far quicker than any other shower product and as the one who has to clean and fix it every so often this annoys me.
If I got this for my Birthday I'd still be a happy bunny though.
A Christmas present from last year, this body wash hasnt had much use as I still have it here to review. The bottle is almost full as I just havnt enjoyed the experience. With Molton Brown products and all other premium brands of bath luxuries I expect them to live up to their names. For example, I often indulge in invigorating Radox and I do also enjoy other Molten Brown products (who knows, I may review those at a later date).
When I recieved the gift I wasnt very encouraged it would be a pleasant experience because of the colour of it. You could say it is a more masculine colour than, say, pink(!) but it didnt look too appealing. nevertheless I were looking forward to using it. Since first using it I have reverted back to my parents' Radox!
I expect any product like this to serve one of two purposes - to wake me up and invigorate me, or to calm and relax my muscles. With the word 'recharge' in the name, you can imagine what I expected. Upon flicking the lid up I can sense the pepper tingling on my nose. However, once I use this body wash in the bath on my skin I find that the fragrance is less pleasant and it doesnt serve the purpose to 'recharge' me at all. I got out of the bath and my skin didnt feel exceptionally nice nor did the scent have a lasting effect on my skin.
Molton Brown isnt an expensive brand and I expected much more of this. In the future I will stick to Radox when it comes to recharging my body in a hot bath. Maybe the other varieties are nicer, but I will wait until I get some more as a gift before I make that decision.
I was given this as a unisex gift for both me and my husband one Christmas, I have used molton brown products for some time but my husband had never tried them before, too girly was his opinion, however this does have a quite manly aroma to it so he gave it a try, we were both impressed with it. It comes in a clear bottle with the molton brown logo on it this can be a bit off-putting as it is a brown colour, not very appealing.
It comes in a good sized bottle which lasts forever , this one isn't as strong smelling in the bottle as other molton brown products but once out it is quite strong but not overpowering and doesn't smell so strong it makes you sneeze! You can use this in the bath or in the shower. In the shower, I tend to use a puff and you only have to put the tiniest dribble on it to make lather up well so a little goes a long way and you can make it last for a long time, which is good, given the fact that it isn't particularly cheap. If you use this in the bath again, you don't need to put great deal in, and you will have plenty of bubbles, and the aroma will fill the bathroom.
If you're applying it directly to the skin It feels smooth on your skin and eyes away use it. You will come out smelling of it and this usually last for a couple of hours or longer if you sat in the bath for awhile however I don't think this one is overly suited to use in the bath I don't find it that relaxing its more invigorating. The main advantage to this product is that it is unsex so you only have to buy one bottle for anyone, I would say though that is more masculine than feminine though
Molton Brown black pepper shower gel is my number one favourite frivolous product to treat myself to when I'm in the mood to spend some money.
The scent is absolutely gorgeous and is an infusion of spices with black pepper oil to detoxify the skin and boost the circulation. When you use this shower gel in the morning it really does help you wake up and feel fresh and clean for the whole day.
It lathers really well and doesn't dry the skin out like I've found with a lot of other shower gels and two pumps is enough to do the entire body.
But let's be honest no one is buying this shower gel for how well it lathers. It's all about the smell and black pepper shower gel smells great it's a really musky masculine smell and it lingers on the skin for the entire day. I bought my black pepper from the men's department but I've been told it is technically unisex however as much as women love the smell it might be a tad too musky for most women.
I'm now a convert to the black pepper range and I'm planning on buying the cologne to go with the shower gel, they also do a body lotion and a candle for those who can't get enough of the smell.
At £16 for 300 ml it's expensive for a shower gel hence why it's my frivolous product because normally I couldn't justify spending that money on just a shower gel but everyone deserves a treat now and then don't they.
The bottle looks good and expensive so It would make a great present for the man in your life be that your boyfriend/husband or father or brother and is available from Molton Brown stores nationwide but also from a lot of department stores and online.
I really recommend it if you are looking for a great smell that lasts all day and don't mind spending £16 on a shower gel but its true what they say about getting what you pay for as no £4 shower gel would be able to compete with this one.
There are very few products that I feel I can wholeheartedly recommend, but this is one. I have used this on and off for a while now and, despite the price, I keep coming back to it. It feels a quality product - ok, it's a luxury product - but it's a nice way to start the day. The pepper smell is lovely but, more than that, it really does wake me up.
Radox have brought out something similar - separate review coming! But the smell isn't as potent and it doesn't give me the lift I need first thing.
There is no getting away from the fact that this is pricy - but that is the brand. And you don't need to use much. In fact, if you do the smell will be overpowering.
I think a lot of Molton Brown products, esp shampoos, are unisex - or am I just "in touch with my feminine side"! But this has a very masculine smell, which has the advantage that my wife doesn't borrow it.
All in all you can probably guess I am a fan - a five star product. Only downside is the price but all of us deserve a little luxury!
I am a firm fan of the Molton Brown range. Yes, it is pricey but I am also a believer of you get what you pay for.
I would always advise buying Molton brown products from one of their shops if you can. This way you re more likely to receive some small trial freebies in your bag. The only downside to this is that once tried, you are usually addicted & end up spending more money in their store.
Although Molton brown stores were once few and far between, mainly to be found in large department stores, there are more fo them popping up all over the place in shopping centres.
This was purchased for my husband. When smelling the product in the store, I was a little unsure. As it was a gift, I made the decision alone without my husbands input mainly through the recommendation of the sales advisor.
I certainly wasn't bowled over by the scent but I readily agreed to give it a go. It is quite a large price tag for a shower gel, however only a small amount is needed for a good lathery wash.
My husband too was unsure of the smell to begin with but it is now by far his favourite choice of luxury shower gel and judging by his verdict I decided to try some myself as it is technically a unisex gel according to Molton Brown.
I found that it left a comlpetely different smell on me as a woman but still a very pleasant fragrance. My skin was soft, smooth and felt cleansed and fresh smelling.
The after smell on my husband was very different from the concentrated smell of the bottle.
The smell is an over hue of black pepper oil and aromatic spice. It is actually claimed to be a natural aphrodisiac too!
The fragrance and experience leaves you feeling revitalised and refreshed which could also be due to its natural anti oxidants in the ingredients.
A highly recommended shower gel.
Okay so this is just one of those shower gels that you just have to steal from your boyfriend, because it really is great. I actually first bought this for my dad, and natural i tried it out! It lathers up really well, and it has a really nice warm sensual smell, which i love. At first i thought that the black pepper smell was a bit strange, but when i tried it, i found it very refreshing. Although it is very pricey, you don't have to use a lot when washing, so it is guaranteed to last you a long time. Also it has a strong smell so you won't want to put too much on! This shower gel followed by a molton brown body cream really is the perfect match. If you're ever struggling for a present to but a man, than definitely go for this, as although it is expensive, it is worthwhile!
this is gorgeous - I so love this body wash - my def. 'desert island' luxury item! this black pepper bodywash is subtle but refreshing and the lovely smell lasts for ages.
I do not know what it is about Molton Brown but everything seems so luxurious - is it the packaging alone? in this case -no - it is the product.
Their items are not cheap but are worth every penny I think and you need only to use a little of the product so tends to last ages and makes the skin feel really nice and soft.
So if you want to buy a special gift this is the product Iwould recommend - I would say it would be great for men as well as women as it does not have a particularly feminine fragrance.
If you have not tried the Molton Brown range because of the price why not go to the Lowry Centre in Salford Quays as they have an outlet store - also have a look at your next 'junk' along with your credit card bill? - sometimes you can redeem points for MB - mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!
"I'm not able to give as much as I have for the last couple of years," went my mum's best friend. But true to her word, even though she may not have all the money in the world, she certainly knows how to pick classy gifts. Last year for example my mum's best friend gave me a beautiful thick woollen scarf from Marks and Spencer, a scarf which I have never been able to buy since let alone find again from the same shop; the year before that, a beautiful glass solid crystal rectangular bust with a miniature frosted glass saxophone inside with hundreds of glass crotchet notes flowing out of the bell at the bottom of the instrument. So I knew in some way that whatever the plastic bottle was that I could feel through the Christmas wrapping that this year I wouldn't be disappointed.
And so came Christmas day when I tore off the wrapping to find the 350ml bottle of Molton and Brown looking up from me. I knew instantly that for all the lack of money my mum's best friend may not have had, she certainly thought of me this year!
Normally I associate Molton Brown with my mum as she adores the hand soap and hand gel she used to buy on occasion. Now that I have found out the price, it is not surprising to realise why Molton Brown is an expensive product; this shower gel for example has to be one of the most luxurious shower gels I've been given in a long time, let alone to even consider buying something like this for myself.
** How much is it? **
Well I received it as a gift remember, but online prices average from £15 for this 300ml bottle; even Molton Brown's own website charges £15 before postage and packing charges. That's quite expensive to anyone bereft of cash or not, but before you dismiss it purely on the price, there are probable reasons to why it is so expensive.
** Product Details **
Well the bottle isn't the most luxurious around, having been packaged in a clear soft feel plastic bottle with a silver labelled icon top. In this instant it doesn't really matter what it comes packaged in because it has the all important capital writing at the top of the bottle and the scent and version written at the bottom in clear classy writing whilst the main company logo sits in dark brown travelling around the centre. Understated design is the key here to the overall product and it looks quite different against other shower products in the bathroom.
** Product Claim & Scent **
And here is why it is probably so expensive! Molton Brown suggests that this body wash relaxes muscles, heats up skin, "recharges your energy banks," and positively softens and smoothes your skin as a bonus. Of course the inclusion of Black pepper oil has something to do with the fact that the bottle also states that it contains a little more than just muscle "stimulating" additives. The inclusion of the Black pepper oil is an apparent mix of antioxidants and an antiseptic, so naturally I couldn't wait to try this out!
Twisting off the bottle top and inhaling the contents, I was slightly disappointed to find that there is no actual smell of "Black Pepper," let alone black pepper you would normally associate with in cooking. But before I even go into how I can't personally find the smell of Black Pepper, this shower gel instantly appealed to me simply because it has great overpowering tones of my favourite aftershave; Christian Dior's Fahrenheit. I have a bottle of that too in shower gel form from another good friend given as a gift this year and it is close in price to this Molton Brown product too.
So, although there is some Black pepper available in the tones sniffing the product with the bottle open, there are also heightened tones of sandalwood and mixed spice. Vanilla can also be obtained as well as slight tones of herbs too which is nothing wrong in a man's range of shower gels in my opinion!
** So does it Work? **
Well my intention was to wait for a couple of days to try the product since I would get a sore back from shovelling up leaves, but curiosity got the better of me and with only a slight twinge in my neck from lying at the wrong angle in bed; I couldn't wait to try the shower gel.
As a shower gel, Molton Brown lathers up but very finely and not into thick foam as normal shower gels do. In some ways it could well be the fact that this product is called a "Shower Wash," as opposed to a gel even though the consistency is slightly thick and gloopy. The colour of the brown gel however doesn't look particularly pleasing when it's stuck in the bottle but out of the bottle it changes its colour slightly to a dark golden brown with slightly lighter colours.
So as I applied the shower wash to my body, I didn't notice very much at the start although the sudden scent of pepper began to attack my senses and I began to feel very awake by the overall hue. Eventually as I applied more of the gel to my body I began to realise the power of this product but it's not like Radox in the sense that automatically the tensions and stresses of the day simply run away. As I applied a little more of the gel, sparingly I might add as a lot comes out of the bottle my skin did begin to feel nourished and smooth - but not any more than a standard shower gel which is cheaper to buy and has greatest smooth skin supplements added.
In effect however, what I did realise after I left the shower was the fact that the bathroom stank of black pepper and suddenly the tones of the overall product were revealed. The pain in my neck had also mysteriously vanished too so in a way perhaps this product does work after all!
Still, I think it smells closely of Fahrenheit and I'm happy with that!
** Skin Afterwards **
"Oh you smell nice," went my friend the moment I saw her standing in the kitchen waiting to take me out for coffee and that was before I added my aftershave! After towelling down, I didn't think the scent of this shower gel had a long lasting effect as I certainly couldn't smell any of it wafting off me, but as she opened the door to the bathroom, the smell of warm pepper hit her in the face.
However, it is important to point out that I didn't feel any warm feeling on my skin when this shower gel was applied but rather the reverse effect - my skin didn't numb up but it did feel refreshing when the shower gel was washed and running down my skin before rinsing the product off.
This shower gel however reveals that it works best with a shower puff or similar cloth as it soon starts to run low the moment you use it only on your hand for full body coverage.
** Other Ranges / Important Info **
The beauty of Molton Brown is that there are loads of different products available from this company, not just this Black pepper shower wash which is geared towards men. Infact their website shows the complete range of products available from men with a few surprises along the way; if you're just thinking that this London company offer minimal ranges of toiletries, then think again! There is also other shower wash products with different flavours added as well as soaps and Eau de Toilette products but none of them are particularly cheap.
Importantly though Molton Brown does not test products on animals and none of their products contain any additives known to harm sensitive skin. They also supply a mail order service too and children can use their products too!
** Conclusion **
It may not have completely offered a smooth and supple skin experience but the luxury of this product doesn't just lie with the fact that its ingredients are non-irritant based. This Black Pepper shower wash can also be used as a slight water based additive if taking a bath, with the resounding effect that the bathroom will more than likely benefit from the heavenly scent if not re-awaken your senses through smell and touch of Black pepper. What a shame then that with its hefty price tag to match it doesn't offer extra soft supplements within its ingredients.
For some men, that simply won't matter as it blends well with most aftershaves thereafter. Importantly the title of this brand shows that it does what it says on the bottle; it re-charges and it re-opens your nasal passages whilst creating a warming, glowing feeling on your skin but at the same time even men need a little luxury sometimes anyway! To my embarrassment I have to admit that the first time I received a bottle of Molton Brown body wash was as a Christmas present a few years ago and the first thought which went through my head was what a cheap skate, getting me a yucky brown shower gel. It wasnt till a little while later that I learnt that this stuff is not actually that cheap and that rather than being yucky it is really nice. So when Mrs CFC treated me to some for my birthday a few weeks back, I couldnt wait to start using it.
>>>> What Do Molton Brown say about their own product
Get ready for a deeply aromatic adventure. This spicy infusion heightens your senses and reawakens your energy banks when you most need it. Steeped in detoxifying black pepper oil, the gel formulation helps to boost circulation and leaves the skin feeling deeply cleansed, warmed up and ready for action. - taken from the Molton Brown website
>>>> Look and Smell
To be honest it does look rather yucky, as it is brown in colour, something similar to tea and has the consistency of runny honey. The fact that it comes in a clear plastic bottle, doesnt really improve its visual appeal, and until you start to use it is really quite off putting. When you open the bottle, there is a slight smell to it but not one that fills the room; in fact you have to get very close to the bottle before you really get a proper whiff of the contents. Surprisingly for a product that has black pepper in its name, it doesnt really smell of pepper but more of a mixture of spices that tickle your nostrils and wakes you up.
>>>> Using it
The most appropriate way to use it is of course is in a shower as a body wash/ shower gel, but it can also be added to a bath and it is this way which I prefer. When using it as a body wash, you really do not need to use much and a small drop, about the size of 2 50p coins will lather up nicely in your hands before applying to the rest of your body. But when using it in the bath you only need a small amount, personally I fill the bottles lid with some and pour that in, and this provides a nice layer of cleansing bubbles across the surface. What you will notice whether you use it in the shower or in the bath, is that when it reacts with hot water it seems to increase the products smell and it is at this point that the whole room fills with a wonderful aroma filled with spices and so do any adjacent rooms.
>>>> Does it work?
I would have to say yes, to all of Molton Browns claims. The aroma that exudes from this body wash really does wake you up, but more surprising is that it also has a very relaxing aspect to it, especially when soaking in a bath, so much so, that I always have trouble leaving the confines of the bath, it is that nice. The actual smell also lingers on your skin for a good hour after finishing your bath as it also does in the bathroom. It also does a great job on the washing front, leaving your skin feeling very clean and fresh, although not overly moisturised. Plus it definitely does make you feel very warm which is down to the black pepper oil, which aids in stimulating blood flow. All in all it is one of a very small number of bath products that I have come across which does everything it promises to.
As is the case with the majority of Molton Brown products, the packaging is quite understated but also quite classy. The body wash comes in a transparent PET bottle with a silver screw top lid, with the Molton Brown logo embossed around the side. The bottle itself has the Molton Brown logo printed on it, along with both its claims and a list of ingredients. The bottle does not have any special sort of dispensing method and is not squeezable, as the body wash quite happily slides out of the open neck.
>>>> Price and Availability
Molton Brown Re-charge Black Pepper body Wash can be widely brought from leading high street chains such as John Lewis and can also be purchased directly from the Molton Brown website, the usual price for the body wash is £15 for 300ml.
Even though at £15 this body wash is quite expensive, and I am sure you could get cheaper brands that near enough do the same thing, I would definitely recommend it as it really does achieve everything it claims to do. What is particularly good about it is that even though it may feel rather like runny honey, this consistency means you do not need to use that much and a bottle does last for quite a while.
