Molton Brown Relaxing Yuan Zhi Bath & Shower
Advantages: Depth of fragrance de-stresses and helps me sleep, only need to use a bit
Disadvantages: Price is 'I'm going to need to have a sit down' high
I was very lucky to receive a bottle of the Molton Brown Relaxing Yuan Zhi Bath and Shower Gel for Christmas. It was bought for me because I had been having difficulty sleeping with general tension and the Relaxing Yuan Zhi Bath is said to aid relaxation, relieve stress and promote peaceful sleep. Before using this I did know of Molton Brown but had never tried any of their products, as for me they are just too expensive. For example, this gel retails at an eye watering £17.00 for 300ml. I did feel rather guilty at the time of receiving it as I was happy enough just using cheap shower gels, so I thought the gift was wasted on me.
Molton Brown endeavour to use as many naturally derived unique ingredients as possible but this doesn't mean that it equates to a completely natural product. None of their products are tested on animals. The main ingredients in the gel are: Yuan Zhi which is a wild plant from South China, traditionally used to balance energy (Chi) and soothe the spirit. Mango oil is added due to its anti-oxidant powers and also acts an anti-inflammatory to restore the condition of the skin. The gel also contains aromatic essential oils of vanilla, Ylang Ylang and rose. It can be used as both a shower gel and bath foam which I think is good as although I'm mostly a shower person I do have the odd bath from time to time.
The Relaxing Yuan Zhi is a deep purple colour and comes in a very stylish clear plastic bottle, bearing the classic Molton Brown logo. The bottle has a very swish looking silver coloured screw lid which is also embossed with the Molton Brown logo. The overall look is very high end, almost too good to use but its not meant for just looking pretty. If you buy the Relaxing Yuan Zhi from a Molton Brown shop they will package it in a lovely box which is tied with expensive looking ribbon. This is ideal for special gifts.
As soon as the bottle is opened you get a whiff of the strong fragrance. I just love it, I can definitely detect Ylang Ylang, vanilla and mango. All of these smells combine together to produce a strong exotic, musky smell. I don't think it favours either a feminine or masculine smell. Molton Brown products often don't differentiate between sexes, so their shower and bath gels can be used by both males and females. I feel the Relaxing Yuan Zhi would be suitable for men and women, although I guess it comes down to personal taste.
I normally use quite a large glug of my cheap shower gel in order to get a good lather. I didn't want to waste this so I was pleased to see that it's recommended to use approximately 5-10mls (this equates to about ½ - 1 capful) dispensed onto a sponge or cloth. I have to tentatively pour half a capful onto my sponge and start to later with water. I say tentatively as it is easy to pour too much out because the gel comes from a large pouring hole at the top of the bottle. I feel it would be better dispensed from a pump but this just my individual preference. I didn't expect this amount of gel to give me much of lather, I was surprised to find this not the case. There was a generous amount of lather which wasn't just for show either as sometimes I find you get a lot of bubbles but not much substance behind them. This was bubbly but had a richness as well that is luxurious on the skin. The fragrance is intensified as the warm water is added to the gel. Again the fragrance isn't just for show, after showering the skin does smell quite strongly of the fragrance, it's almost like I've sprayed some fragrance on as well. The scent does linger on the skin as I drift off to sleep. When I wake up in the morning I can still smell it on my skin which I find really nice. I've used the gel a couple of times in the bath where it's recommended 25ml-30ml is poured under running taps, though I find it sufficient to use just 1 ½ caps. This is enough to give a good amount of bubbles. It's nice to have a good soak and have more time to take in the fragrance. As far as moisturing the skin I think the gel does a good job. I always use moisturiser after my showers as standard but the gel does leave the skin feeling soft and smooth, I just like the added moisture of a cream.
Before using this gel I never really thought showers could be all that relaxing as I tend to have one in the morning to wake me up. I've now got in to the routine of having one in the evening and use the Relaxing Yuan Zhi to wind down. I can get in the shower feeling stressed and uptight but something in the luscious purple potion makes my whole body ease, clears any fuzzy head and just generally puts me in a better mood. I was sceptical to say the least with its 'promoting sleep' claim but I have to say I do find it easier to get to sleep after I've used this. The problem being I now love the Relaxing Yuan Zhi I'm a traitor to my cheap shower gel. It's just too expensive for me to buy myself though so think I will have to keep my fingers crossed for my Birthday. I do expect my current bottle to last me a good while longer. As only a bit of gel is needed I still have over two thirds of my bottle left and I've used it daily for 10 weeks.
The Relaxing yuan zhi can't be be bought direct from Molton Brown (www.moltonbrown.co.uk) or from department stores like John Lewis. Also in the Relaxing yuan zhi range is a body cream, a sleep mist and candle, but again prices are extremely high at £17, £25 and an eye watering £49 respectively. Which is a shame as I think it would be lovely to layer the gel and body cream together to get an added depth to the fragrance.
Thanks for reading
Summary: A ridiculously expensive shower gel but so worth it.
