Review of Original Source Almond and Coconut Shower Gel
Original Source products hit the UK market some years ago. The company who are part of the Cussons group, produce a wide range of products bearing the Original Source trade name including shower, shaving, bath, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant and similar goods. Original Source use 100% essential oils and natural fragrances rather than synthetic. Original Source products are packed in recyclable containers and the company work closely with the Vegan Society and are members of the Aromatherapy Trade Council.
Packaging and usage
A rich creamy shower gel, enriched with essential oils such as sweet almond and basil and scented with natural coconut and almond. The creamy coloured gel is presented in a cream coloured, trapeze shaped, opaque plastic bottle with a black flip open cap. The cap is at the bottom of the package and doubled as a stand for the shower gel. The container does not have a hook to hang the product up in the shower. The package contains 250ml and has a shelf life of 36 months once opened. The product is made in the UK.
The front of the package has the Original Source brand name, the fragrance and description in brown and black font. The ingredients and company information are on the reverse.
The shower gel is easy to use, the product does not spurt out as some brands do causing you to waste a goodly amount! Original Source Almond and Coconut shower gel is thick enough to need a little squeeze to remove it from the bottle. The design of the container also means that there are no problems removing the last drops when you get to the end of the bottle.
The directions on the reverse of the container tell you to 'Pour out, go nuts'. Seriously, whether you use a sponge, shower puff or your hands, a very rich and creamy lather is obtained with only a modest amount of shower gel. I live in a hard water area and find the product lathers well, so I would assume that this will lather where ever you live!
The shower gel promises to 'nourish stressed out skin'. I must say that after using this product my skin certainly felt soft and smooth, however as I'm not certain whether my skin was stressed out in the first place, I won't confirm the company statement!
The company warns on the label that as the product contains essential oils, these may not be suitable for your skin type and the usual 'do not get into the eyes' advice.
At first sniff, this product has fairly bland, yet sweet scent, however once under the shower, the hot water seems to bring out the scent. The scent is over ridingly almond with subtle coconut under tones. It reminds me of coconut cakes or if I am feeling poetic, a warm summer's day in the country!
The fragrance is delicate and feminine unlike some of the other fragrances in the range, I would say this is definitely one for the girls! The fragrance is clean and fresh, not over powering or intrusive, it would not interfere with other fragrances you might wish to use after your shower.
==Cost and Availability==
Original Source shower gels are widely available form supermarkets, chemists and other stores. The average price is around the £1.99 mark, however this product is sometimes available in 99p and £1 stores and on supermarket special offers. Mine was purchased on a Buy one, Get one Free deal in Sainsbury's supermarket.
A full list of ingredients is listed on the reverse of the container and one the company website, a break down of what they use in their products can be found.
I will not list all the ingredients here, it would read like a chemist shop stock list and I am sure no one really wants to read it anyway!
Original Source do warn that essential oils do not agree with all skin types and that some should be avoided by pregnant women.
I have extremely sensitive skin, I suffer from occasional flare ups of contact dermatitis and I have never had any adverse reaction with any of the Original Source products I've used.

Original Source Almond and Coconut shower gel is a great buy. It is easy and economical to use, smells divine, softens your skin and is a good cleansing product. One of my favourites and I would recommend to others with no hesitation.
Thank you for reading.

I was initially attracted to Original Source products because of their high content of essential oils, but after trying one 'flavour' I was keen to try more. The coconut and almond smells absolutely divine, it reminds me of cherry bakewells. It's not an overpowering synthetic smell though like some other branded products can be, this smells very authentic and extremely delicious. The smell of the product doesn't appear to linger all day or overpower my perfume (which is something I'm personally very pleased about) but having said that I smell 'clean'.
The packaging is perfectly designed to expel the amount of product you want to use, it doesn't pour out really quickly so that you end up wasting quarter of a bottle for one shower. The amount that comes out is controlled by the user and because the packaging is designed so that the bottle stands on the lid I've found no problem using all of the product right to the very end.
I use a body puff and I find that a pea sized amounts is enough to lather up to wash all over thoroughly. The consistency is actually creamy and leaves my skin feeling really soft after using, I've found that I'm using less moisturiser as a result of using this product and my skin stays soft all day. The packaging does claim that it is re-hydrating and I've certainly found that to be true.
I usually buy this product from Asda for £1.99, but there are often special offers on original source, and I have been known to pick up a bottle or two from the 99p store making it even better value for money.
Original Source is certainly a brand that I trust, their products are good quality while being value for money and very user friendly. It would take a lot to pull me away from this brand and this product.
I love Original Source products as they are so strongly perfumed that the smell really lasts on your skin and also makes your bathroom smell divine for hours after you have used the products in the shower. They are almost like an air freshener!
My favourites of the lime and mint flavours. I have tried the coconut and almond shower gel from Original Source and it is equally good in terms of moistursing your skin and getting you clean as the others. However, I am not so keen on the smell. The coconut is really strong, equally strong as the lime or mint, but for me it doesn't smell as refreshing and clean. I suppose that's because it is a more milky smell - if that makes sense at all! I think basically for a product to smell really clean it needs to be a sharp smell, rather than a warm smell. Having said that, I do like the smell of coconut and this shower gel does smell really nice.
A bonus is that the almond oil is really good for your hair so this product can double as a shampoo.
A 250ml bottle is about £2. Pretty good price for a good shower gel.
The packaging has been changed on this bottle, it now says "Seasonal Edition" and "For Summer Sabotaged Skin" on it, as well as describing itself as "Nourishing Almond and Coconut" - a lot of information just on the front label! I'm not sure if the recipe is any different, but I guess that Original Source wanted to corner the market when we were all so dried and dehydrated during a long hot British summer - yeah, that's why there is plenty still on the shelf at the end of October then.
This shower gel claims that it's 100% pure and natural essential oils will nourish skin suffering from the drying effects of the summer - almond oil will soften skin and help to balance water loss, and coconut oil will counteract the effects of over exposure to sunlight. Well, I can count on one hand the days this year that any of my skin was exposed to sunlight, so I don't think I can really test the 'seasonal' aspects of this shower gel very thoroughly, but I am a fan of the smell of almonds, and quite keen on coconut too, so I thought I'd give this one a try.
I associate Original Source with very zingy flavours - citrus, mint, tea tree - with bright colours and in-your-face scents. This product is completely different, although it has the familiar Original Source bottle, the colours on the label are muted - browns and creams and beige. Rather than claiming to zap you awake in the morning, this shower gel offers a more gentle rousing, it will nourish your skin.
The gel has a subtle smell too, it has undertones of coconut but more strongly a quite bitter scent of almond. It smells like coconut and like almond, rather than something flavoured with them, and as a result this is not a sickly sweet scent. The bottle opens at the bottom, which is handy in a shower gel so that you don't have to struggle to squeeze the last bit out.
My experience of this gel was pleasant, it smells nice and it lathers fairly well. It was not particularly memorable and I can't imagine that I would want to buy it again. As far as the claims for it's moisturising effects - I really didn't notice much difference. It didn't dry my skin, certainly, but I couldn't say that it moisturised either. If I was looking for a nourishing shower gel I would definitely go for Lush's Coconut and Almond Smoothie (which I reviewed recently). Same principle and same ingredients, but a much more enjoyable and successful product. However, Original Source wins the price war - as it costs around £2 a bottle - currently on 2 for 1 offer at Tesco.
I am a self confessed bargain hound, even more so in these credit crunching times. Out of all the many, many "essentials" that I buy the one thing that I won't buy is own brand shower gel.
I don't mean to come across as pretentious and in fairness I can't explain myself why I don't buy a shops own brand. The only explanation I can come to, and it is a pretty weak excuse, is the fact I can have up to three showers a day, so this being so, I do like a rich, soothing and heady scented gel, one that leaves you feeling refreshed, relaxed and still smelling of the gel a couple of hours after, hence the product I am now reviewing!
The product I will now review is "Original source- almond and coconut shower gel"
Ok, so I have always been aware of the Original Source products, but they have always been a little out of my price bracket.
I mentioned earlier that I love a nice shower gel product, well I also shop at Asda, and very rarely do they have all there shower gels at full price, so I tend to buy the ones that are at a reduced price, which in fairness makes them the same price as the Asda own brand ones, this is how I got these.
When I realised that the Original Source products were on offer I jumped at the chance of buying them.
For the very few out there that are not aware of the packaging I will of course indulge! The bottles stand on there top, this ensures that every last drop is squeezed from the bottle, meaning much less wastage. The bottle is shaped rectangular, but becoming slimmer towards the top.
The bottle is the perfect width for your hand, even little pigmy ones like mine, and the bottle is also textured making it none slip, perfect for use with wet hands.... Yes I know obviously most people will have wet hands in the shower!
The label on the front is simple, yet full of information. Stating that this product is perfect for sun sabotaged skin as it is nourishing.
The back label states that this contains almond oil, which is skin softening, helps balance water loss and absorbs moisture and also coconut oil which helps counteract the effects of over exposure to sunlight.
When you flip open the lid / stand you will notice that the nozzle is a small round plastic disc, that when you squeeze only allows out the amount you need, this again reduces down on wastage.
The smell is delicious, which is a huge bonus for me, I love products that smell of food, I'm always on a diet, so if I can't eat I might as well be bathing in it!
The smell is not as I expected, it smells neither of almond or coconut, but rather a deep and rich smelling cocoa butter, with a sprinkle of brown sugar, making it slightly sweet.
The colour is a creamy colour, and is thick when squeezed out. It doesn't run off wet hands and when used with either a shower puff, (my preferred method), or by simply rubbing together between hands, this gel produces plenty of creamy lather.
After use, this gel leaves you feeling clean and refreshed, my skin has always been tough due to the constant shaving that is has to endure so it feels no softer as such, but does not leave my skin irritated in any way.
Also, the fact that my kids use this stuff and my daughter has sensitive skin, should show how delicate this shower gel is as this does not irritate her either.
As the back of the bottle states, this contains 100% essential oils, not synthetic fragrances or parfum and is not tested on animals.
This product is also suitable for vegan use and has a shelf life of 12 months, although with constant use a bottle usually last a week in my house!
As I mentioned earlier this was bought on offer, at the time of purchase this was £1.00 a bottle at normal price, or at the moment at least, this will set you back £1.60.
This is a lovely shower gel, doing everything I wanted it to do without the skin irritation you can sometimes have with highly fragranced gels, recommended.

Thanks for reading x
I buy this and other original source products but I think this one is my favourite.
It costs approximately £1.90 but you can get them sometimes on buy one get one free in the supermarkets. It comes in a plastic bottle which tapers at the top and it stands on its black lid which is a good idea because its easier to get the last drops of it out.
It is full of almond and coconut oils which really nourish your skin. I think you can smell a bit of the coconut but the main smell is the almond which is quite overpowering.
When you wash with it it gives a good lather from a little amount of the shower gel. It smells gorgeous and it stays on your skin for quite a while afterwards although the almond does fade a little, and i always end up smelling my arms because it smells so nice! My skin always feels softer and smoother too and it feels moisturised.
This is a great shower gel and I really do recommend it to everyone and I will continue to use it as it is quite indulgent.
I use a lot of different shower gels, but this is the only one I keep buying again and again because I really love it! It usually costs about £1.99, but you can usually find it cheaper if you shop around in places like Bodycare or pound shops.
It comes in a tall thin clear plastic bottle with a black flip lid that it stands on. This makes it easier to get all the last bits out without having to stand around for ages in the shower waiting for it to come out. It says 'New' on the bottle, but I've been buying this for quite a while so I don't think it is, maybe they just mean it's new packaging or a new recipe, because the range has been revamped a couple of times.
On the bottle it says that Original Source is packed with natural stuff, using only 100% pure and natural essential oils to make sure you have a shower like you've never had before. Experience nutty nourishment with Almond and Coconut essential oils, taken straight from their natural source. Intensely rich to nourish stressed out skin.
The shower gel is a very light peachy colour and it smells, surprisingly enough, of almond and coconut. To me the coconut is what comes through the most, but other people have said it smells more like almond to them. It's a fairly sweet scent which I can imagine a lot of people wouldn't like, but I love it. The texture is quite thin and runny, like a shampoo or liquid soap, but it lathers up really nicely.
I always use a shower puff and it creates a really thick, creamy, luxurious lather and a little bit of this really does go a long way. When I'm using it, it feels really smooth and soft on my skin and it makes my skin feel smooth too. It feels like it's moisturising my skin as well as just cleaning it, so when I rinse it off my skin feels nice and refreshed, but also soft and hydrated.
The scent stays on my skin for a few hours after using it but it's not that strong. My skin also stays feeling hydrated for a few hours after using it, and it feels smooth and soft until I next get a shower. I find a lot of shower gels give me dry skin especially across my shoulders and down the middle of my back, but this one doesn't, it keeps it nice and soft instead.
I am having a bit of a buzz at the moment on shower gels, apparently I am not supposed to buy them for decoration or use them once and leave them on the shelf to gather dust (not that my bathroom has dust, its part of the décor!) So my other half has banned me from buying anymore until I have finished the ones I have. I think he got of lightly it could have been shoes! So I am working my way through them and got to this one, which I had used once before and couldnt remember why it was left on the shelf, after using I remembered!
Original source has been around a while and the company state that they only use 100% pure and natural essential oils. These are extracted from parts of plants and fruit peels. Essential oils are known for their relaxing and rejuvenating properties. These days people are turning more and more to natural products.
They also state that they do not test on animals or use a third party that does, their products do not contain ingredients derived from animals apart from sodium tallowate which is used in the tea tree, lavender and spearmint soap. They are also registered with the vegan society (again with the Im not eating it!) and are also a member of the aromatherapy trade council.
Actually it looks quite smart, they have changed the shape of their packaging lately. It has a black flip top lid that you stand it up on with that plastic bit in the opening. The rest of the bottle is clear plastic so you can see the shower gel through it. It is 250ml bottle and states that it is intensely rich.
The first thing I remembered was the scent and then it came back to me I bought this because I love coconut and I know that almond is good for nourishing and revitalising the skin. But the reason I didnt use it again was this seems to smell more like marzipan! Now I am all for my skin smelling sweet but I really hate marzipan, the almond is so overpowering that you cant actually smell the coconut at all. The gel is a creamy beige colour and feels nice and thick not at all runny, I use a puff thingy and with this the gel lathers up really well the lather is nice and thick and rinses off well. I must admit my skin did feel nice and soft after using with no dry patches, obviously I still had to moisturise but I didnt feel the need to straight away after. The good thing for me is that the scent doesnt linger and I found that really strange especially with this range. I really could not smell the marzipan at all after I had dried in fact I couldnt smell anything and just in case I had lost my sense of smell I asked the other half to have a sniff! After looking at me as if I had just escaped from the loony bin he did and even he couldnt smell anything! To be honest I was quite pleased about this but for anyone who likes this scent it would be a bit of a let down.
Bitter almond, sweet almond, coconut, basil also I was quite surprised to see quite of list of other ingredients with long names and numbers! If you want the full list then check out the original source website you can also get a free trial product if you register!
RANGE & PRICE
Pure lime £1.97
Tea tree & mint £1.97
Lemon & tea tree £1.97
Almond & coconut £1.97
Currently at boots they are on buy one get one free
So I suppose I am going to have to use this one up as I did promise the other half that I would or I could just find another hiding place! Problem is because you dont have to use a lot at a time it is going to last for a while.
To be honest as the scent doesnt linger I will get through it and just put up with the initial marzipan smell, but it has taught me a lesson of smelling before buying! It is a shame though as it does moisturise and lather well so any marzipan fans out there this one is for you!

I am soon to go on my holidays and rather than fill my suitcase with my ever growing collection of Lush products I decided to look around for something a little bit different and easier to carry with me in my suitcase.
I have used Original Source products a fair few times now, like Lush they seem to blend together a plethora of interesting ingredients which either smell utterly delightful or not so nice to be honest. I first came across Original Source products when I was sent a Tea Tree Oil Shower Gel sample and since then I become a Lush addict and never looked back.
So upon my recent shopping trip I came across an offer on Original Source products and the temptation was too much to bare with two products for £1 promotion so I ended up buying two bottles 250ml bottle of Almond and Coconut shower Gel, one to try before I go on my holiday and should my skin not be irritated, one to take with me on my holiday.
Now depending on which you buy, each Original Source product range comes in a differently shaped bottle. Shampoos and Conditioners come in bottles that you would expect them to be in and the shower gels come in all different shapes and sizes, some with the useful plastic hanger so you can hang it up in the shower and in the case of the product I just bought a cone shaped bottle with no hanger. Each product is also brightly coloured and clearly stands out within any display, again unless you bought the product I did. The one thing that did confuse me is that some of the products are both Shower gels and Shampoo, so when buying something from this range double check you actually have the right item you wish to buy, the bright spark in my local supermarket stocked the Almond and Coconut Shower Gel next to the Almond and Coconut Shampoo and so on across the entire range.
So, taking my little package into the shower I was pleasantly surprised to learn how easy it was to use, the bottle itself is a flip lid which can often cause a little difficulty to open when your hands are wet, but this one is rather study and it stands perfectly well on its own when you put it down. The first thing you will notice is the Almond smell once the bottle is open and I am a big fan of almonds in food and within beauty products and then you will find a faint smell of coconut once you begin to massage the cream into your body but it isnt a strong and overpowering smell and certainly will not leave you smelling like you have covered yourself head to toe in Sun tan cream. The cream itself is an off white almond looking colour and is quite thick and smooth but lathers really well, so you dont really need to use very much, just be careful when you do squeeze the bottle because it does release a lot of the cream.
After use the smell does linger on your skin as well as emanating throughout your home for a good few hours, I could certainly smell it for a long time after using and my skin did feel notably softer and much smoother. Having now used this Shower gel everyday for 3 weeks I have to admit that my skin is feeling very soft especially on my legs which do tend to dry out slightly in the hot weather.
Now I know you can use Shower Gel on your hair but I tend not to simply because I have never actually found they do as good a job as using shampoo and conditioner but you can find this product as a Shampoo within the Original Source Range.
So, to the ingredients, contained within this Original Source product are much simpler to identify than a Lush product. Like Lush Original Source use only 100% pure and natural essential oils in their products and also have a policy against testing on animals and each of their products are also Vegetarian and Vegan friendly, so natural products means no synthetics which also means they are much better for you and your body.
So the ingredients, well firstly we have Almond Oil (Prunus amygdalus dulcis )and it is used traditionally by masseurs to lubricate your skin and it is used within this product for its nourishing and reviving properties on the skin. Secondly we have Cocos nucifera which is the scientific name for a coconut and it is used to help smooth and moisturise your skin and then we have ocimum basilicum oil or as Sweet basil as it is commonly known and it is used quite often as an aromatherapy oil for its sweet smells but when contained in this way it is used to help refresh and clean the skin. There are of course many other ingredients which you would have to look into but these basic ingredients which are found within many other products all help to cleanse and soften your skin whilst helping to relieve dryness and flaking to leave you with smooth supple skin.
If you are pregnant or breast feeding, please double check with your Doctor or Midwife before using this product as they recommend not to use essential oils during pregnancy.
Now I was pleasantly surprised that I found myself liking this, there was no greasy feeling on my skin after using, in fact it does absorb relatively quickly into your skin and because there wasnt an overwhelming smell of coconuts for me it was even better, as much as I love coconuts I actually dont like the lingering smell, the almond smell is much sweeter and longer lasting and when you are travelling around London all day in the smog filled polluted atmosphere your skin does become dry and dirty looking so it is quite refreshing to be able to use a product which does make you feel clean and smell clean.
Having super sensitive skin and often having problems using anything other than hypoallergenic products or Lush I was impressed to learn that my skin was not affected by this Original Source product so I do recommend it to everyone, even if you do have funny skin like me.
Original Source products can be found in any supermarket or high street stored such as Boots and Superdrug and you can often find them in your local convenience stores. Prices do vary quite a lot depending on where you do buy them but for a 250ml bottle of shower gel you can be expected to pay anything from £1.59 to £2.49 unless you find a very good offer like I did.

What makes Original Source different?...
Original Source uses 100% pure and natural essential oils, producing the most amazing scented bath and shower products.
Being a company that uses natural resources, you would expect them to have strong ethical policies on the whole. And they do. Not only are Original Source taking a firm stand against animal testing they go the extra mile to ensure they do not use any third parties in the production of their products that do not follow this policy. As such, their products have been recognised by the Vegan society.
As Original Source uses natural products the impact on the environment is lessened and they use recycled products for packaging, which is designed to reduce wastage.
and now for the science bit
Essential oils are taken naturally directly from fruits and plants using elements like the leaves, stems and flowers in plants or the peel of fruits. This process means they have a natural and unspoilt fragrance which comes across the instant you take off the lid.
Essential oils are known for their physiological and psychological effects even helping improve one's health. Almond for example, as used in the almond and coconut shower gel, is known to have positive revitalising properties.
Original Source is a member of The Aromatherapy Trade Council working in partnership to safeguard access to responsibly marketed essential oils.
and more about the coconut and almond showering experience
So now you know about all the reasons why this is a good product to use ethically, you want to know if it is a practical and enjoyable product to use. The simple answer is yes.
The coconut and almond shower gel has by far the mildest scent. Unusually for coconut products, it was not the first aroma to greet me when I opened the bottle. Instead, I was greeted by a warm and gentle soothing smell of almond, closely followed by the sweet and refreshing scent of coconut. A truly pleasant and understated smell all together which comes to life as it is lathered into your skin leaving you with beautifully smelling skin.
As Almond is known for its moisturising abilities you would be right to expect a creamy gel opposed to many of the other Original Source shower gels. You won't be disappointed. This is a thick, rich cream which you can feel moisturising your skin instantly, leaving you with smooth, soft feeling skin. There is no greasiness or stickiness as can be the case with similar products. Instead, it rinses away leaving you feeling clean and revitalised.
how original is the packaging?
Original Source products are packaged with environmental sensitivity using recycled plastic materials. The shower gel bottles are clear with a black lid and clear label with simple black writing. Being transparent allows the vibrant colours of the products themselves to shine through drawing the shopper's eye towards it invitingly. As the Coconut and Almond shower gel is creamy in colour, the shopper is greeted with a warm, toasted almond butter.
In an attempt to prevent wastage, the lid opens from the bottom allowing reserves to settle within reach so the user doesn't have to come up with imaginative methods of scraping what's left from the bottle of an almost empty bottle. My only criticism is that as these are relatively un-pliable bottles it is still next to impossible to get everything out.
Does this wonderfully tempting aromatic experience cost the earth you ask
No! Prices vary from shop to shop but you can expect to pay no more than £2.49 for a 250ml bottle. FYI - Boots has a buy 1 get 1 free sale on at the moment on Original Source products with the shower gel market at between £1.89 and £2.17. What are you waiting for? Get going!
Do we have to scale the mountains of Tibet to find this wondrous creation
Unless Tibet is your nearest supermarket, no! Original Source is becoming increasingly popular and can now be found in ASDA's, Sainsbury's Morrison's as well as Boots, Superdrug and Semi-chem. I have even found it in a well stocked corner shop. Having said that, to find a more complete range of products and to ensure you can find the relatively new Coconut and Almond Shower Gel, I would head to Boots. Alternatively, check out their website at www.originalsource.co.uk where you will find an extensive shop including some products I have never seen available.
Do I rate Coconut and Almond Shower Gel
I do! I do! To be honest I prefer some of the citrus based gels simply because waking up is hard for me and they give me a revitalising burst of energy in the morning while the Coconut and Almond I find to be more calming and relaxing. For this reason, it makes a fantastic bath foam.
Having said that I get out of the shower smelling fresh, clean and not like I have rolled around in a vat of something overly sickly and sweet. Most importantly, my skin feels and stays feeling soft and well nourished throughout the day. What more do you want from a shower gel?
