I seriously think I have gone abit over board in the last few weeks on Shower Gel. For anoyone that reads my reviews will know by now that I am unable to use Shower Gel's or Bubble Bath products due to ongoing skin issues. I am instead supposed to only use Hibi Scrub what is better known as surgical scrub which is used before operations to remove extra bacteria on the skin.
About a week after my 6 monthly review with my specialist however I had a phone call to rearrange my appointment for 12 months time. As the specialist advised in his first appointment with me, traces of soap only take about 6 months to come of your skin once the use of Hibi Scrub starts. So I thought 'ohhhh I can use shower gel for at least four months and he will never know'.
I think though I have gone abit overbooard with buying some. On my last weekly shopping trip to Morrisons I spent ages smelling each one and I came away with about 20 choices. Whoops. The latest one I have tried is the Original Source Dragon Fruit and Capiscum gel.
I love the Original Source range and have used many over the years with my favorites being the Winter gel, the Lavender gel and the Mint gel which give the most amazing tingly feeling on my skin. The Dragon Fruit one is something I had never seen before and couldn't wait to give it a go.
The bottle comes in Black so you can't see the gel on the inside which again is something I have never seen with the range before. It is the same shape as the others with the lid being at the bottom so you can ensure you can get all the gel out. It is again quite wide at the bottom going smaller at the top. The top of the bottle advised that the gel is Refeshingly Spicy and the Original Source logo is in white with the Dragon Fruit and Capisum written in an orange and yellow colour with a label to advise it can be used on hair and body.
Dragon Fruit is actually something I only came across a few weeks ago in Morrisons. I was shocked to see this odd round red fruit with little green spikes sticking out of it in the fruit aisle. I had honestly never seen it before and though how on earth would you eat that.
Researching the product though advises me not only its it known for it's high Vitamin C content or Antioxidant properities but also for it's laxative affect. I thought that was quite worrying for a shower gel but I have used it and can assure you it doesn't have that affect on me. In parts of america the fruit is eaten raw and has a sweet taste to the pulp inside.
Capsicum I have also found out is a fruit which looks a lot like a red Pepper. It is mostly used in cooking but can be used for circulation boosting in shower gels, bubble baths and even fruit tea's. With these fiery combinations I couldn't wait to start using it.
As soon as I opened the bottle I couldn't smell the aroma at all which I found unusual for the Original Source range. As they only use natural ingrediants the smell is usually powerful open opening. As I squeezed the bottle I could smell the spiciness that I was looking forward to. However, it is not so good when you squirt it up your nose trying to smell it as I found out.
As soon as I poured the gel into my hand I again noticed that the smell was not quite as powerful and hoped that it would be once I started rubbing it in. I was so disappointed that throught my whole shower the smell was only slight and not as nice as i'd expected. The slight aroma that you do get I think smells like a peppery, spicy smell that is quite nice. But not the best smell I have experienced.
As with the Mint Original source I found the gel quite tingly as I rubbed it into my skin. It left my skin feeling refreshed, clean and oh so...... well tingly. I wouldn't suggest you use it on your delicate area's though as it is a hot tingly feeling I felt.
Once I had started to towel dry myself though I found the smell just completely disappeared. I was so disappointed. The tingly feeling lasted for a while so I wouldn't recommend this one before bed as I felt rather awake once used. My skin however was so soft. Even the next morning my skin was lovely and soft but with no smell what so ever. I felt like I was using that damn Hibi Scrub again. I was gutted.
This is one that I am glad I have tried but will not be buying again even if it did cost just £1.00 on offer.
This version of Original Source has a very strong earthy-like smell and almost has that underlining spicy smell you get from ginger root. The colour is red and rubbing it on your skin in a hot shower makes the smell even more intense, it doesn't really tingle much like you'd expect but it does have a slight tingle to it. I guess you couldn't sell a product that burnt like hell!
I found this version of Original Source slightly better than the others (even though they are all lush smelling) because after you have have bathed/showered the smell of the shower gel does seem to stay on your skin a lot longer and your left smelling and feeling rather spicy.
One thing I will say is that I found Original Source - Dragon Fruit & Capsicum smelt quite a lot like Lynx Boost with guava and volcanic stone, in fact it smelt pretty much identical but the Lynx Boost seemed to stimulate the skin a little more.
On a sad/geeky level, the type of chilli used in this Original Source product is a capsicum annum - bell pepper to be specific..
Original source is my one vice - at least, the one thing I like to think of as a vice. I'm not sure why, because it is just a brand of toiletries and it isn't like I'm doing anything illegal, but still.
I found this cheeky little number on a 2 for £2 offer and after smelling the fragance, decided to get it. I have been using it for a number of days now and really like it, so I thought I would do a write up.
What Is Original Source?
Original Source is a brand of toiletries that specialises in all natural, vegan ingredients. It is certified by the Vegan Society. They try to source and produce as many of their ingredients and products from the UK to reduce air miles, and produce a range of different shower gels, creams, scrubs, shampoos, shaving gels and more. What Is Dragonfruit And Capsicum Shower Gel?
This is a new member of the shower gel range. It has a distinctive, opaque black outer case (unusual, as normally the OS shower gel bottles are translucent which allows you to see how much you have left, and as a result I found this a bit annoying) with the name and manufacturer written on the front in white and orange. It has a flip lid at the bottom with the standard plastic sphincter-esque (not sure if that is the proper name but whatever) dispenser that allows gel to come out but nothing to go back in, which minimises waste and contamination. It is designed for hair and body, and it is a gel, not a cream, which has a pleasant translucent orange colour.
Why Dragonfruit And Capsicum?
Dragonfruit is full of vitamin C, which is an antioxidant and therefore (if you believe the hype) good for your skin and helps keep you looking young. Capsicum is a type of chilli pepper, and gives the product a lovely, spicy smell.
What's It Like?
I really liked this. The bottle has a very masculine appearance, and the smell is again very masculine - very spicy and sporty. It doesn't smell like a soap, which is nice, but neither does it smell particularly strongly of dragonfruit or capsicum - unlike many of the OS range, where you can really pick out the scents of the ingredient that were used, with this you would be forgiven for thinking it was just a sports-brand shower gel rather than OS. However, the smell really is top notch, far better quality than standard sport gel brands such as Adidas or Lynx.
I use it on both my hair and body. One problem I do have is that we live in an area of hard water, and as a result I have to use more gel than I would really like to work up a good lather. I think this is a fault with the gel as I have used other products which did lather up well. However, it cleans extraordinarily well - I have never smelt cleaner than after using this. It is not designed to be particularly moisturising and I do not think that my skin feels softer having been using it, but neither does it dry out my skin. The smell lasts a really long time - I haven't yet showered this morning, and I can still smell it faintly on my skin from almost 24 hours ago. The smell is not blindingly obvious, but the future Mrs. F could notice it and loved the way it smelt on me. It blends very well with my cologne, as well! (Hermes Eau D'Orange Verte, it picks up well on the citrus notes).
Is It Worth Getting?
In my opinion, yes. I love the smell, and I love how clean it leaves me. I don't really buy into the whole antioxidants/superfoods skincare nonsense so I won't comment on whether it leaves me with younger looking skin, but it does leave me feeling clean and, thanks to the spiciness, invigorated. As I said, this is quite a masculine smell so I would more recommend it for the fellas, but if for whatever reason you require a moisturising shower gel then I would not suggest you get this. It was not designed as a moisturiser as well, so probably best to avoid if you have dry skin or eczema etc. The price is great - usually goes for around £1.99 but will often be found on a 2 for £2 offer, and although it does seem to need a bit more gel to work up a good lather here in North Yorkshire's rock solid water (everything's harder up North!), it is definitely worth it.
I first tried this shower gel a few weeks ago when I was round a friend's house, and after I tried it I decided I had to go and buy myself some.
The Original Source Dragon Fruit and Capsicum shower gel is for use on both hair and body, and what's the most impressive is it gives your body a really nice tingling sensation, which serves as the most perfect wake up call imaginable, it also leaves you smelling gorgeous, and as a bonus your bathroom will smell really nice after use as well.
Having now converted to this shower gel, I can see it being my favourite and most used shower gel for the forseeable future, and it retails in most outlets for just under £2, you really can't go wrong.
Ingredients: Aqua, sodium laureth sulfate, lauramidopropyl betaine, sodium chloride, parfum, hylocereus undatus (dragon fruit) extract, capsicum annum, propylene glycol, sodium benzoate, disodium EDTA, citric acid, sodium citrate, hexylene glycol, potassium sorbate, sorbic acid, methylparaben, limonene, hexyl cinnamal, linalool, CI 16036, CI 17200
Original Source to my mind has always retained a distinctive brand thanks to its all natural ingredients, Vegan friendly and almost organic in its packaging. Over the last couple of years the company have grown in strength to the point that its shower gel products are the most distinctive on the shelf; no other brand has a rectangular speckled feel good bottle that looks like a thick splint of ice, frosted or self coloured to show the scent/variety - than Original Source products. Under its original brand, it was in 1997 that I discovered their Mint & Tea Tree Source shower gel and yelped about in the shower as the gel went to the farthest regions of my body and realised that the organic formula was quite eye widening, if not voice inducing! The accompanying shampoo was just as wild when it came to waking me up. Thankfully Original Source changed their formula somewhat, but against the competition I adore the simple fact that their Mint Source is particularly apt for both women and men. So, when I saw a black bottle from Original Source claiming to be spicy and refreshing, I took a closer look.
£1-57 from Asda for the 250ml bottle shows that times have indeed changed; I recall that Original Source used to be quite pricey so it was good to find a change, or some change from £2 literally. The name of this shower gel, "Dragon fruit and Capsicum," coupled with the all black speckled (great to grip) bottle, fiery red and yellow label suggests that this is a very hot intoxication of blended natural ingredients to wake the heaviest of sleepers up, or perhaps just to relax the intended buyer. I couldn't wait to get it home, and unusually without checking the scent first just bunged it into my shopping trolley.
Firstly, whilst Dragonfruit isn't a fruit that can normally be found at your local grocers, it is an exotic fruit that has a spicy flavour, but how Original Source have extracted the scent is unknown to me as I've never quite felt there was much of a scent to the original fruit. Capsicum to younger generations of pupils when asked, had no clue as to what a Capsicum is, and to most of the U.S, they know it as simply a red, green or yellow pepper. Quite why Original Source go to the bother of putting the "other" name, I'll never know - it is supposed to be a shower gel after all - not an exotic premium shelf shower wash like the brand Molton Brown.
Certainly when the flap was opened and I shoved the tube close to my nose, I did detect black pepper very readily and already adore Molton Brown's Black Pepper shower wash for men, so this was an instant attractant where comparisons could be made. Other than a strange fruity base level emanating (must have been the Dragonfruit) I find the combination to be quite refreshing to my nose. The crucial test however was using it in the shower.
As much as the natural ingredients, organic assumptions and general quality that Original Source have pumped into their ranges of shower gels, I'm mystified to find that apart from a slight awakening when used in the early hours of morning, the only passable scent that comes off my body after use is flat Coca Cola. That's not spicy at all! What happened to the scent when I shoved the tube to my nose initially?
The look of the gel is slightly bizarre too - it's like Tizer that has gone thick or a bright, strong and clear red gel that is quite possibly intended to look like hot molten lava when it comes out of the tube. This isn't off putting at all, but whilst I felt reasonably awake when using this shower gel I wasn't exactly awake from instant use with the shower gel. Infact I'd go as far to say that cold water from a shower first thing in the morning has a greater impact than this excuse. I'm sure children who use this shower gel will adore the colour - its not dissimilar to the colours that you can normally find with Walt Disney branded shower gels designed to thrill with their garish colours.
To be fair, for the price it doesn't surprise me entirely that Dragonfruit and Capsicum has been a let down. To boot, the gel doesn't foam up well unless of course you use it with a shower net or a sponge to prolong those natural additives. More surprisingly although I've come to expect that Original Source products aren't designed to keep skin smooth and supple, the scent wasn't lingering enough unlike other rivals on the market such as Radox herbal shower gels or even supermarket brands that aren't so organic in their make up. That's a large downside from a company such as Original Source where I've come to think their products past have given a better performance in terms of stronger and lingering scents.
So for those thinking that it's the latest hot organic product to fall off the shelves, think again; if you want a black pepper wash designed to fill your shower room with pepper and spices, this one is not it. Thanks for reading. ©Nar2 2009
I adore Original Source products. The make your skin tingle with cleanliness! I wanted to get my husband some and I saw this Dragon Fruit and Capcisum Shower Gel in Boots. I could not resist getting it - to be honest, mainly because of the packaging. It is black and therefore looks a bit more manly than the bit colours of most of the Original Source shower gels.
The smell of this product is really strong, like all the shower gels in this range. It is quite exotic. Dragon Fruit is a difficult scent to describe, other than unique and exotic! Sorry but you need to smell the product to appreciate how exotic it is. It is a bit spicy and peppery overall - this is probably down to the capsicum.
I have to say this is my least favourite original source product. The smell is strong but doesn't win me over. Maybe it is just too confused and exotic for me. I like the simple smells. However, it cleans and moisturises well. It didn't last long in our house, as my husband used it a lot - which must mean he likes it too.
Although it looks and sounds a bit posher than the rest of the Original Source Shower Gel range, in fact it is the same price, costing about £2 for a 250ml bottle. I think it looks a lot more expensive than this and do a great gift.
I've always loved and been faithful to the Lime Original Source shower gel but have now found a new favourite in this product!
I bought a bottle of this for my holiday (been in Cornwall for the last week) and have used it all up!
I was having a shower every morning using this gel then after swimming in the afternoon was having a bath and I loved this shower gel so much I used it then as a bubble bath, very successfully I must add; it foamed up beautifully and the bubbles stayed for ages.
As Original Source fans will know; their products are usually packaged in clear plastic so you can see the colour of the product inside. This one is different; the bottle/tube is opaque black plastic, it is in the usual shaped bottle of Original Source shower gels but not see through so you have to guess the colour!
The bottle is textured around the sides so easy to keep hold of with slippery, wet hands when you're in the shower.
The writing on the front says:
DRAGON FRUIT AND CAPSICUM
For hair and body
This writing is white, yellow and orange and looks warm like the spicy contents promise to be. Above this is the slogan 'Refreshingly Spicy'.
The label on the back is bright red adding to the warming feel of the bottle, on this label it says "It's naturally intense" and describes the spiciness you will get and says its perfect to spice up your life!
The two main ingredients are quite obviously Dragon Fruit and Capsicum.
What is a Dragon Fruit?
The Dragon fruits real name is Pitaya and is the fruit of a cactus. These fruits are full of antioxidant Vitamin C, I have never tasted one but my mum says they're nice and I trust her! Dragon fruits have red flesh.
What is a Capsicum?
A capsicum is called a sweet pepper in the UK. (They have them on Dominos Pizzas!)
They are spicy but sweet too, I love them on my pizza but will it work in a shower gel?
Both of these natural ingredients are red so that explains the choice of colour for the gel; it is a bright, fiery red which looks worryingly artificial but rest assured the colour comes from natural colourings.
As I mentioned above when you squeeze it out it is a bright, BRIGHT red.
The smell is the most impressive part of most Original Source goodies and this one doesn't let the side down!
The smell is very warming, it doesn't really smell like peppers or fruit but very spicy.
It reminds me of Atomic Fireball sweets (the little retro red balls in a yellow box) or Fireball Jawbreakers (my favourite gobstoppers) being the big kid I am I love both these sweets so it's unsurprising I love this shower gel. For any Lush fans reading, this shower gel smells a lot like the Christmas Kisses Bubble Bar.
It's definitely a unisex fragrance; it isn't too girly or too manly, perfect for everyone I think.
It foams up gorgeously both in the shower and in the bath (As I tried) and you do feel really clean once you've massaged this spicy smelling gel into your skin.
The smell doesn't last long on your body which I was a bit disappointed with but your bathroom will smell gorgeous for ages which is nice.
This gel says it is suitable for hair and body but I only used it on my body so can't comment on its effectiveness as a shampoo. I suppose it would be handy if you go to an gym to take an all in one product but I like having a separate shampoo and conditioner, one thing though I bet your hair would smell nice if you did use this.
So if you like spicy smelling bath products, this is the one for you; it definitely wakes you up!
Original Source Shower Gels RRP is around £1.97, but you can pick them up for as little as 99p in Bodycare and other cut price places and at the minute they are at the full RRP in Boots but are buy 1 get 1 free.
Original Source products are all Vegan friendly and they do not test on animals.
The packaging is also recyclable.

I've always been a bit of a fan of Original Source, sucker that I am for anything 'natural'. I used to use the Mint and Tea Tea shower gel a lot - nothing wakes you up quite as fast as that! And I am still in mourning over the discontinuation of their deodorant range.
There are plenty of good reasons to buy from the Original Source Range. Firstly, it is not as expensive as it used to be (or at least, it hasn't gone up), costing under £2 for a 250ml, with frequent 2 for 1 offers (there is one in Tesco as I write). They are also not tested on animals and the ingredients are suitable for Vegan sensibilities too. Original Source products are 'packed with natural stuff', and although I would prefer them to be slightly more specific (just TELL us, we'll understand!) than this, I do accept that they contain extracts and essential oils. (There are quite a few things on the ingredients list that I have no idea how to pronounce though, so lets not get too carried away with the 'natural' credentials.
Finally, and undeniably, I like Original Source because they always choose the zingiest and most stimulating scent combinations! Their mint and lemon will knock your socks off, their rose and geranium is deliriously heady and the fruity ones smell good enough to eat. Here is one I haven't noticed before - Dragon Fruit and Capsicum shower gel. In fact, the packaging is marked 'new'.
It wasn't till I got it home that I thought that perhaps this shower gel is marketed at men, looking at the black bottle, with colours that suggest flames, even the mention of dragons! It appealed to me due to the unusual design and ingredients, but would be ideal for men, perhaps even more so for boys - I wonder if I might persuade my 9 year old to shower by mentioning dragons... hmmme. Anyway another feature is that it can be used on hair as well as body. I may be being sexist - I think men are more likely to do this than women, but it makes this product a good option for showering after swimming or sport.
I am vaguely aware of Dragon Fruit as being an exotic fruit, probably one of those that is more impressive to look at than eat, and I don't think I have tasted one. Capsicum is pepper, and I was expecting this shower gel to be quite hot and spicy as a result. The bottle says 'Refreshingly Spicy'. In fact a capsicum is what we'd more commonly call a sweet pepper in Britain, not as exotic at all! As a result the shower gel is more sweet and fruity smelling with subtle spicy tones. It squirts from the bottle bright red and looking like jelly, not creamy at all. However, the gel does lather well and was a pleasant showering experience - although I didn't use it on my hair this time!
I think this product is a bit gimmicky (I fell for it this time!). Original Source have picked flavours that sound exciting but don't necessarily lend themselves particularly well to a toiletry product.
