“ Brand: Original Source / Type: Shower Gel / Suitable for: Body „
I love the Original Source range and always end up buying the new 'flavours' as and when I come across them. I discovered a bottle of this Original Goji Berry and Mallow Shower Gel lurking at the back of my wardrobe, and it must have been there a while as I can't even remember when or where I purchased it! This particular variety is a special release, and was available for a limited period as one of Original Source's Winter seasonal editions.
Product description: "Marsh mallow plants have been used for centuries to relieve coughs, sore throats and chapped skin, so we thought it would be a perfect ingredient for our latest winter seasonal edition.
We've also packed in a load of organic Goji berries for good measure - a super-fruit stuffed full of anti-oxidants, macro nutrients and vitamin C. So there you go! Ward off the winter!"
The shower gel comes in a clear plastic bottle containing 250mls of product. I like the clear packaging as it allows the product to show through and you can see exactly how much you have left. The bottle has a plastic flip top lid at the base, with a small hole inside through which the gel is dispensed.
The shower gel itself is a pretty bright purple colour and has a nice consistency that lathers up really well. I like to use this with my trusty shower puff and it creates a huge amount of foamy bubbles which is easy to spread over my body, giving a lovely cleansing effect, as well as making my skin feel softer. As with most Original Source shower products, a little goes a long way so it is good value for money. This shower gel is nice to use, but they thing that makes it one of my favourites is the gorgeous fragrance. The mallow is most prominent, giving off a beautiful sweet vanilla tone, and the Goji berries add a rich fruity note to lift the fragrance and turn it into a really dreamy, comforting fragrance. I absolutely love the smell of this shower gel, and it comes across very strongly when in use, as well as having good enough staying power to linger on my skin for a while after washing with it.
It's a shame that this was only released as a seasonal edition, as I would certainly purchase it all year round. I would have expected a Winter themed shower gel to have a more traditional scent, maybe something warming and spicy like cinnamon, and this sugary sweet fragrance does not really make me think of Winter at all. I absolutely love this shower gel and only wish I had purchased more of it at the time. I can definitely recommend it and will be keeping an eye out in case this does get released again.
This is a vegan product and Original Source are against animal testing - please keep your beauty cruelty free!
On our quest to become more environmentally aware and animal friendly, I've been gradually substituting our usual products for 'cruelty free' versions. I have always assumed that this would cost me a great deal more, so was pleasantly surprised to come across the Original Source brand. Original Source is a company that produce bath/shower gels, shampoos and soaps at a very affordable price. They don't test their products on animals and are vegan friendly. They use only natural stuff in their products and produce everything domestically which I think is a real plus in favour of this company. We have tried a few of their products now and for the most part we have been impressed with the results. Therefore I was immediately interested when I saw this seasonal edition shower gel which is part of Original Source's 'Winter' range. The Goji Berry and Mallow Shower Gel is one of the newer products in their range and as it is the middle of a particularly bad Winter, it seemed quite appropriate to bring out something that might help to perk the nation up in their morning shower.
This latest offering comes in the usual triangular shaped, recyclable bottle that all their shower gels apppear in. I was attracted by the lovely deep purple shade that could be seen through the clear bottle, which certainly reminded me of goji berries. I was also curious to find out what the mallow extract would add to this product. On the back of the bottle, the label claims that 'marsh mallow plants have been used for centuries to relieve coughs, sore throats and chapped skin'. Apparently, this is why they though it an ideal ingredient for their latest winter seasonal edition. They also mention that it is has loads of organic Goji berries in it which is also full of good stuff such as anti-oxidents, macronutrients and vitamin C. I think Original Source has been pretty clever here with the wording on this label. Without actually claiming that this stuff will have medicinal effects, it does lead you to think that it might produce some magical results. So with this in mind, and being totally fed up with the miserable weather, I was willing to give it a go. At only £1.19, it was also very cheap so I wasn't going to be too disappointed if the results were poor.
The first thing I noticed when using this shower gel was that the consistency was quite runny. I had to be careful not to squeeze the bottle too hard or too much would come out. The second thing that came to my attention was the very sweet aroma that came from this product. I would describe this as sickly sweet. There was definitely more marshmallow than goji berries in this bottle. It just didn't smell fruity at all, but more like boiled sweets. Now if I am honest with myself, I have a very sweet tooth. However, although I would rarely turn down a bag of sweeties, I have no desire to smell like one. I was determined to give this stuff the benefit of the doubt though and tried a bit more of it, thinking that maybe it would leave a more pleasant after smell. Well it did have a lingering smell but I couldn't really call it a pleasant one. All evening, I kept getting a whiff of this sickly sweet shower gel and realised that it was coming from me. The other thing that occurred to me at this point was that there was absolutely nothing 'wintery' about this aroma, or indeed of any other season. I would imagine a wintery smell to be more spicy or perhaps herbal, but definitely not sweet.
I like a lot of products from Original Source but I'm afraid this particular one gets the thumbs down from me. However, my teenage daughters seem to like it so at least it won't go to waste. It also just goes to show that we all have different opinions and I did notice that other reviewers also have very differing opinions on this product, giving it a range of between one and five stars. If you like extremely sweet smelling shower gels you may like this and at only £1.19 a bottle from Body Care it is still worth a try. It is also sometimes available in Poundland for £1.
I was tempted to give this shower gel only one star, but on the basis that my kids like it and that it is very cheap, I give it two stars.
Thanks for reading my review!
- Introduction / Thoughts Prior To Use -
I was shopping in Poundland a few weeks ago when I spotted a shower gel from Original Source which I hadn't seen before- it was labelled as a seasonal shower gel (whatever that means!), that season being winter and the actual type/flavour(?) being 'Goji Berry and Mallow'. Now that sparked my interest, sounding like an interesting if not somewhat exotic mix of flavours or ingredients and I also found the packaging quite appealing - its (like other Original Source products) triangular shaped and transparent, plus the gel itself is a nice dark purple colour and purple is my favourite colour lol so being that I was in Poundland, I couldn't help but give it a go.
Being honest, I didn't expect much from it - I regularly use Original Source's mint and tea tree products but I presumed that this one may well be of a lesser quality as I hadn't seen the mint and tea tree products in Poundland and you know if you see any particularly good brands in that shop, its alot more likely to be the one or two weaker items in that brands line that will be on offer for such a cheap price, so I wasn't expecting a great deal from it but I certainly couldn't argue with paying the mighty sum of £1 to try it out.
- My Experiences -
Back to the product and once I was able to try it out out for the first time, I discovered that the bottle is quite generous in terms of the amount of gel it produces when you squeeze it (you might need to give it a bit of a shake to start with but other than that its fine). You don't need too much to get it to lather, though you get quite alot for your money, so I tend to treat myself and use two, uh, squeeze's worth per shower lol given the low cost for the bottle and everything. I use a puff to distribute the gel and as I say, its quite quick and easy to lather but the main reason why I really like this product is the smell! It has a really nice, soothing smell that I've found does linger - not for hours and hours but certainly for about half an hour to perhaps an hour or so after having showered. If I apply it to my hands and arms and then have a sniff at it a short while after showering, I can definitely smell it and to me, its very appealing smell, which is quite comforting. The smell is (as the name of the product would hint, I suppose) a warm, fruity berry smell and in a way I suppose it does seem more of a winter-y smell, hence why its labelled a winter product. I suppose you could say its a bit of a comfort smell, if that makes any sense.
- Medicinal Benefits(?!) -
Having had a look on the back of the bottle, I should probably mention that it proudly claims 'Marsh mallow plants have been used for centuries to relieve coughs, sore throats and chapped skin'. As well as this, it also claims that the organic Goji berries which they also make the item from are 'a super-fruit stuffed full of anti-oxidants, macronutrients and vitamin C.'
Don't ask me what macronutrients are and I think its been discounted recently that having alot of vitamin C has much impact in terms of keeping colds away and the claims regarding the marsh mallow plants seems a bit far fetched - a shower gel that can really cure coghs and sore throats?! mind you, vicks vaporub I suppose is maybe somewhat similar.
Either way, it gives me a good excuse to use this product - it has medicinal properties (of a sort - supposedly!) so it must be good for me!. I have had a bit of a cough for a while now and I'm afraid I can't conclusively claim that my cough disappeared since using the product but that hasn't put me off using it by any means.
- Extra Info. -
This product comes in a 250ml bottle, which I think is about two months supply worth, I've had my bottle for a couple of weeks or so and I've only used about a quarter of it, roughly (though I may have forgotten to use it being in a rush once or twice or when having a bath but thats roughly about right).
According to the back of the bottle, its vegan friendly (that must apply to the plant extracts used) and it produdly claims that its 'packed with natural stuff' - as all Original Source products claim, I think. Having said that, the ingredients list below seems to be full of long, unpronouncable ingredients, so how true that is I don't know.
The bottle is recyclable and it has an icon of a pot with '12m' on it, incase that means anything to anyone.
- Would I Reccomend It? -
Yes, I'd definitely recommend this product, if you can get it for £1 then, to me, its very good value as it lathers quite easily and has a very pleasant smell, plus the bottle looks nice and it should last at least a month or two - plus if any of the stated medicinal benefits are true then what more could you want? I'm a little sceptical about that side of it myself but there again, I tend to catch alot of colds, so if I find anything new that claims to help guard against colds and flus and thats cheap, I'm happy to give it a go. I didn't actually buy it because of the claims as I only read about that after buying it but its got to be worth baring in mind anyway...
Thanks for reading my review, I hope you found it useful and thanks for all rates and comments.
I am a big fan of Original Source shower gels, and recently started buying them regularly rather than just swopping around from different brands. They do a wide range of great 'flavours' including lemon and tea tree which is another of my favourites.
Last winter they brought out a Winter special edition of Goji Berry and Mallow and I liked the colour so bought it. It is one of my favourites now. You can still get it so I don't know whether they will continue doing it even thought it was meant to be for the winter.
The bottle is 250ml for about 1.99 from Boots which I think is good value. The bottle is clear plastic with simple writing on the front. This is great because the colours of the shower gel are so eye catching so you can see them through the plastic. This one is a bright purple/red. It also means you can see when you are nearly running out and need to buy more!
The lid and opening are at the bottom so you don't need to turn it upside down when you are nearly out.
The shower gel is a good consistency and doesn't run off you. It also lathers up well which I think is important. It has quite a sweet smell to it, probably stronger than some of their other types so it may put some people off. I think the smell is nice though and does linger on your skin afterwards.
They use the Mallow as apparently marsh mallow plants are used to ward off chapped skin, coughs and sore throats. The Goji Berry is a super-fruit which is full of anti-oxidants, macronutrients & vitamin C.
I think this is a really nice shower gel that leaves you feeling clean and fresh.
Original Source offer affordable bath and shower products which they claim are packed with natural stuff! They offer various scented shower gels including mint, lemon and lime but also release seasonal edition Winter Range shower gels. One of these is the Goji Berry and Mallow Shower Gel which I will be reviewing.
So what do they say about this product?
*Marsh mallow plants have been used for centuries to relieve coughs, sore throats and chapped skin so we thought it would be a perfect ingredient for our latest winter seasonal edition. We have also packed in a load of organic Goji berries for good measure - a super fruit stuffed full of anti-oxidants, macronutrients and Vitamin C. So there you go. Ward off the winter*
This particular shower gel comes in a tall plastic bottle which can be recycled. There is a flip open cap which is at the bottom of the bottle with a dispensing hole. In order to avoid wastage and leaks, you will need to squeeze the bottle to release the shower gel. The bottle itself is pink/purple see through which is perfect for viewing how much gel is left. The front has the Winter logo up the middle, the flavour and that it is a seasonal edition shower gel. The back of the bottle has the Original Source logo, a bit about the product, ingredients and contact details. It also states that this is Vegan friendly and can be left open for 12months and still be fresh.
*The Shower Gel*
The shower gel itself a dark pink/purple shade and is transparent. It is a relatively thin consistency.
I won't bore you with the unfamiliar ingredients but this shower gel does contain water, fruit extract parfum and citric extract.

*Availability and Price*
As this is a seasonal edition, it may no longer be available in supermarkets and other stores. I picked my bottle up in March from Wilkinsons at a cost of £1
I am personally not a fan of the mint and lemon shower gels produced by Original Source, but spotting this in Wilkos, I was immediately attracted by the pink packaging and the promise of mallow!
Packaging - I think the bottle is a great shape and although I don't have a shower, this sits nicely on the side of my bath tub. The dispenser is ideal to avoid leakages and slimy messes whilst it sits on the side of the tub.
Smell and appearance - very sweet..if not a little too sweet but this is to be expect with marshmallows and fruit extracts mixing together in shoved in a bottle!
Lathering - this is where my issues with this shower gel started! At first I used my hands for lathering and cleaning which is typical of me. So sitting in the back, wet hands and body clearly and the shower gel just runs off me..I know I am a bit tubby but come on..that is just a waste! I ended up using lots more than I expected. So I located a sponge and found that it lathered up nicely on the sponge and I only required a small drop for this effect!
The scent of the mallow was evident but I don't have a scooby doo what a Goji berry smells like but I am sure its in there somewhere! My skin was left with a subtle sweet aroma which lasted a good few hours.
If this comes back on the shelves, I would recommend it but only for use with sponges and if you like really sweet shower gels!
Thanks for reading!
I used to work in a supermarket and came about this product when I had to tidy the toiletries aisle. It gave me an oppoutunity to look at all the products; and being in that aisle for over 2 hours just made me realise who much choice us ladies have with so many products on the market hehe.
I picked up the product in 'Goji Berry & Mallow', the reason for this is that the product was a luscious shade of pink and very inticing, when I flipped the lid and smelt the product it was lovely; very sweet and you could deffaintly smell the sweety smell coming from the mallow. I was a little dissapointd though as once I had squeezed the product out and it was on my skin, it faded too quickly for my liking. I was expecting it to last for quite a while, but to be fair I think by the time I had finished my shower the scent had gone, or faded, or just lingered away.
The product comes in a well designed bottle with it standing upside down, with the lid at the bottom; always handy I think as it allowd the product to fall to the base and therfore you get the last drips of the product out. It's a flip lid which is pretty ok for opening and closing back again. This particular product I got was part of ther 'winter' range; not entirely sure why, as I tend to associate winter based products to be white, and icey tones of blue. I think maybe as the scent is so sweet the product is aimed more towards an evening and the dark sensual nights that draw in maybe. (I think, im sure im blabbering ... anyways moving on) I was disspaointed in the way the product worked when on the skin. When I squeezed the product out onto my sponge and tried to lather it up, it didn't react as quick as I would have hoped. Once it was on the skin it lathered up a little, but not as soapy as I would have liked. Also I felt as though I had to squeeze more product out as the first lot only was enought for my arms, and I felt i needed more in order to do my legs.
*** Overall Opinion
This is generally a nice product and boasts how it contains loads of natural ingrediants. This product and its other spin of scents are sometimes on promotional offer for £1 each, however at full price their like £1.99 which is quite exspensive I feel and personally wouldn't purchase again. It's a lovely colour product for your bathroom and initially smells nice, but due to the scent not lasting and the lather not being very good, this is the reason for my rating.
Around Christmas time, most companies release seasonal goods and the Original Source company are no exception to this occurrence. Having been completely delighted with their previous years Christmas shower gel (the chocolate one- I have a review about it if you want to check it out!), I grabbed this as soon as I saw it.
At the time, it was only £1.00 from Morrisons (on offer), and I'm not sure if it is still available, but a pound for a well-known brand of shower gel is good regardless.
The first thing about this is how it looks. As with most Original Source bottles, this is clear and almost a rectangle shape. Because it is see-through, we can look at the gel inside. Basically it makes the whole bottle a deep pink/purple shade (an effect of the Goji berries?). For me, it definitely looks more feminine because of this.
When you open it up, it definitely smells strongly of berries; it is fruity, quite sweet and quite rich. Again, I would definitely say this is more a feminine fragrance, as it has an almost perfume quality to it. It is quite a fresh smell as well, and would definitely make you feel clean after using it. However, a negative about this is that I can't work out how it is festive. For me, this smell reminds me more of late spring/summer time rather than winter, and so it seems strange to market a sweet floral product during the dead of winter. Another negative is that it leads no after-smell whatsoever, unlike other shower gels I have used. While this may not be a negative to some people, I like to leave a shower smelling fresh and showered, and this just doesn't do it for me.
As with the previous Original Source product I used, this was not a positive opinion of the texture. While it is easy to get out of the bottle, the gel never really lathers up unless you use loads of it, and because it has an extremely runny consistency, more often than not you'll be wasting some as it just runs off the flannel or whatever you use. It does make your skin feel smooth though, which is definitely a plus.
Unfortunately, I'm not a massive fan of this particular edition of the Original Source shower gel collection. While it does clean you and smells nice inside the bottle, the lack of presence on the skin after usage and it's ridiculously runny texture means that I'm not entirely convinced I'd purchase this again. If you see it on offer then, by all means, give it a shot, but don't pay full price for it because it's not the best Original Source have to offer.
This product is suitable for Vegans so has not been tested on animals or contain any products derived from animals in it. Original Source redeem themselves from this lacklustre product through their ethics.
Thanks for reading and reviewing! :)
Whilst shopping in Asda a week or so back I noticed an Original Source product I had yet to try, the shower gel was an extremely appealing purple colour and I was drawn in by the promise of it being a special edition Winter scent. I've had just about enough of Winter actually, being literally snowed in twice already this year, but bought the shower gel anyway thinking it would have the wonderful spicy aroma of most festive bathing products.
I should have sniffed it before buying it though as when I got home and opened the bottle I realised this is actually more of a Summer shower gel, there is nothing wintery about it and I feel rather disappointed about that.
The scent of this shower gel isn't as strong as other Original Source products, it's not delicate by any stretch of the imagination but has got a sweet aroma that doesn't quite gel with how I think of this brand.
I find it a little too sweet if I'm honest, I adore the sweeter products you can buy from Lush and Boots but in my opinion this shower gel is rather cloying in its sweetness. It does have a very vague berry aroma which I assume are the Goji Berries, but it stops just short of being fruity and that's a shame because I think having a more robust berry fragrance would perhaps relieve some of the sugariness in the shower gel.
As with other Original Source products, a little goes a long way. I use a natural sponge in the shower and find I need to dispense a very small amount of gel to wash my entire body. This makes Original Source a very cost effective way of showering as a bottle will last for a long time, although unfortunately I believe I will be bored of this particular product long before the bottle is finished.
It doesn't seem to do as much for my skin as other Original Source shower gels, in fact the skin on my arms felt rather dry after using this product and my eczema became more itchy and irritated than usual. I assume the fragrance has something to do with this as the gel itself felt exactly the same as any other shower gel from the brand.
This one lathers quite well, better in fact than the Mint one which I used last. I'm quite surprised actually that this dried my skin out as although I do have very sensitive skin, Original Source is one brand which is kind to my problem skin and rarely have I had any kind of reaction to it.
The cleansing abilities are decidedly average too, I definitely didn't feel squeaky clean when I got out of the shower and again I put this down to the sweet fragrance as it didn't work to refresh my skin as well as their more tangy products.
I definitely won't buy this product again, and I honestly cannot believe I am saying that about Original Source as generally I adore their products. This one, however, seems badly thought out and is almost as though Original Source decided they needed a Christmas product and simply labelled it Winter instead of coming up with a refreshing new idea.
I wouldn't be surprised if over time this shower gel continues to be available, but without the Winter tag. It's a fragrance that I'm sure will appeal to many people, unfortunately I am not one of them.
I brought this new Original Source shower gel when it was on special offer in Morrisons for 84p, I LOVE Original Source stuff so couldn't wait to try it when I got home. It's called Goji Berry And Mallow and this shower gel is part of the special range that they brought out for winter. It's a shame Dooyoo haven't got a picture up of the bottle because it's proper pretty, the shower gel is a pinky purpley colour and instead of the words Original Source going up the bottle it says WINTER.
I loved the smell as soon as I opened the bottle for the first time, it's a proper sweet smell that smells a bit like marshmallows and a bit like very sweet fruit. I've got some goji berry stuff from Avon and this shower gel smells quite like it but the mallow makes it a lot sweeter smelling and loads nicer.
The shower gel is quite thin so you have to be careful not to squeeze too much out, you don't need that much for each shower and if you use it on a shower puff then you only need a little squirt.
You get a wicked lather out of this shower gel even if you only use a bit. It makes my skin feel mega clean and fresh and the gorgeous smell lasts for ages. Actually I had a shower last night and I can still smell the sweet smell on my skin now, I was a bit surprised about that actually because this isn't half as strong as most of the Original Source products. I also like the fact that this one isn't tangy or tingly like the lime or mint Original Source shower gels, I do love them but in this cold weather I don't want to use anything that's going to make me feel even colder! lol
This shower gel didn't make my skin any different so don't expect that it's going to leave your skin feeling softer or anything like that, the main thing is that it made me clean though and it deffo did that.
I love this shower gel and am going to buy more next time I'm out because I don't think they'll be round for long being as this is a limited edition winter one.
Goji Berry and Mallow shower gel is a new winter seasonal edition from the Original Source line by pz cussons.
Is this shower gel tested on animals?: Unlike most Original Source products there are no statements on the label saying the product is not tested on animals. The shower gel is Vegan Society approved however, which (according to the Vegan Society website) means the development, manufacture and ingredients have not involved animal testing by the manufacturer or anyone on their behalf/whom they have control over. However, I take this to mean that the product could still contain ingredients tested on animals. The vegan society stamp also means no animal products, bi-products or derivatives have been used in development and manufacture of the product. It should be noted that no Original Source product is BUAV approved.
How is the shower gel packaged?: Goji Berry and Mallow shower gel is packaged in a relatively standard rectangular (ish) transparent shower gel bottle. The bottle stands on it's lid, so the gel flows out with relative ease. However, the lid is difficult to remove which makes it difficult to get "that last bit in the bottle" out, something which always annoys me. The bottle and lid don't have any recycling information on them, so it is unclear if the bottle can be recycled (my guess is it can't).
So, what's it like?: Goji Berry and Mallow shower gel is a lovely bright purple colour, and has a nice thick consistency, which produces a good lather. It has a very sweet aroma, which is not overpowering and much more delicate than other Original Souce products. The scent certainly brings Marsh Mallows to mind, and makes the shower gel a good one to use in the evening as it produces a feeling of relaxation. When using Goji Berry and Mallow shower gel, I feel like I am using something a bit special and a little luxurious.
I would recommend this product, but have only given it three stars, as I feel there are much better products in the Original Source range. A star has also been lost due to the lack of clarity on recycling and animal testing.
