I love the Original Source range and always end up buying the new 'flavours' as and when I come across them. This particular version is one that I've had stashed away at the back of a cupboard for ages, and have finally got around to digging it out and using it. The Original Source Vanilla Milk and Cocoa Shower Cream was originally released in 2008 as their special Winter edition product. Each year different products are released during Summer and Winter for a limited period. I believe I actually picked this up from Poundland, where it would have cost me a measly £1.00. They often stock old or discontinued Original Source products so keep an eye out for these if you have a Poundland store nearby.
Product description: "Crop of Winter 2008. Shiver. It's nippy out there. Not only that, you and your skin are being battered by wind, rain, central heating and deprived of daylight. So why not treat yourself to a nip of this ultra-indulgent shower balm - with aromatic vanilla to melt winter blues and cocoa to help leave skin super soft. Almost as helpful as hibernation."
The shower cream comes in a clear plastic bottle which allows the shower gel to show through. This is good because it allows you to see exactly how much you have left. The bottle has a flip-open lid and a squeezy funnel neck. The lid is actually placed at the bottom of the bottle, so that when it is stood on the bathroom shelf all the product stays at the bottom and then can be easily dispensed straight away which is much better than having to tip it up and squeeze the bottle for ages waiting for it to reach a lid at the top of the bottle.
The shower cream has a brown colour to it that makes the cream look like mud! It seems a bit wrong to be washing with something that has a colour associated with dirt and uncleanliness, but even though it looks a bit weird this stuff really does work well. This is a shower cream rather than a shower gel so it has a nice thick and squishy consistency that feels smooth and silky. I like to use this with my bath puff sponge to get a really bubbly effect and to help it create a nice rich lather. The shower cream spreads easily across my skin and because it is so soft it feels really gentle.
The Vanilla Milk and Cocoa Shower Cream is a real treat to use. Whenever I use this shower cream it feels great against my skin and I am left with my skin feeling softer, smoother and moisturised. It turns the chore of keeping clean into a real pampering experience and is lovely to use in the bath or shower. The ingredients have a positive effect on the condition of my skin, and have helped to rehydrate it after time spent outdoors in the hot weather. It is also great at cleansing and removes general dirt, sunscreen etc without having to scrub away at it. This shower cream formulation is so gentle on the skin and it feels nice and soothing as well.
The scent of this shower cream is absolutely delicious and if you love sweet things then this will be right up your street! Imagine the scent of a rich hot chocolate drink, mixed with the scent of a creamy vanilla milkshake and that is what this smells like! It's totally gorgeous and I find the scent to be very comforting and relaxing which is just what I want when I'm having a nice indulgent soak in a hot bubble bath. The scent is very strongly noticeable when washing with it, and does stay on the skin for a short time afterwards but as soon as I've put my body lotion on later then the scent of the shower cream is easily overpowered and replaced.
Because this is a rich product and it spreads so well I find that I don't have to use a lot for each application, and the 250ml bottle has lasted me for a couple of months before I ran out. This is a real bargain considering the cheap price, and that Original Source always uses high quality and organic ingredients in their products. Original Source always give great value for money and even though their products are very cheap they are excellent quality and like top end products for just a fraction of the price.
I always trust the Original Source range and this is another brilliant product. It's a shame it was only available as a seasonal limited release, but I have thoroughly enjoyed using it and would certainly recommend it to anyone (if you can still get hold of it!).
Original Source are against animal testing - keep your beauty cruelty free!
Today, my dear reader, you will learn all about this special shower cream I bought. I suppose I bought the last ones that were left over because it is the 'Winter 2008' edition, but maybe my review will be of use to you if it comes out the following winter?
Lovely brown slime
What is it?
The Winter 2008 Vanilla Milk and Cocoa is a shower cream variety by the well-known bodycare brand Original Source. It comes in the usual bottle that stands on it's head.
The special thing about Original Source is that it's all vegan, so no animal has died or even suffered for this product. The company also claims to have their products "packed with natural stuff", as it says on the back of the bottle.
Why did I buy it?
I quite like Original Source and was delighted to see a new variety. I always get the really tingly peppermint one and the lemon zest variety as they make me feel so fresh and awake when I use them in the morning. When I saw the one I am revieweing now, I just had to have ti because I have never tried out a shower cream by them only shower gels, and vanilla milk and cocoa just sounded really nice.
This shower cream comes in the typical Original Source bottle - kind of cone-shaped, but placed on it's opening. It measures about 19cm and is see-through. Only the cap is black.
On the front, it says "Winter" upside down in beige, capital letters. On the letters we can see little snowflakes. Beneath that, it says "Vanilla Milk and Cocoa" with the "and" being written upside down in a beige square.
Under that, it says "Shower cream" in black capital letters on light brown background.
The back of the bottle has a beige label with more information. The title say Original Source - Crop of Winter 08. Below that we get a funny little text introducing this variety:
"Shiver. It's nippy out there. Not only that, you and your skin are being battered by wind, rain, contral heating and deprived of daylight. So why not treat yourself to a nip of this uktra-indulgent shower balm - with aromatic vanilla to melt winter blues and cocoa to help leave skin super-soft. Almost as helpful as hibernation.!
Below that it says "Packed with natural stuff" in a black square and below that there is a warning to "take care to avoid your eyes".
Then we get the ingredients and a few signs - the notion that this products is vegan, the logo of "pz Cussons", the recycle dot, information on costumer service and the information that this bottle contains 250ml.
On the lower left there is a large barcode.
Well, first of all: The smell is just perfect! I really really like it. I have had other cocoa shower creams and gels that all smelt awful. They usually tend to smell very moldy, but not this one! This shower cream smell like cocoa butter and I can also smell the vanilla. It's as if the Option's Vanilla Chocolate drink has turned into a shower cream. So the smell I am really satisfied with-
The texture - very slimy but spreadable. It looks a bit yuckie, but it's alright.
When using this lovely stuff, I only had one problem. I used it after shaving my armpits and it simply touched the area - I didn't rub it in or anything - and it started to sting really bad. It really hurt and I was very surprised because I am usually not that sensitive . I have never had problems with products stinging after shaving so I was quite surprised.
This is the only downside, so that is the one star I take off.

This was about a pound because Original Source was reduced by price wherever
I went around Easter, and I think they tried to get rid of their last supplies of this variety.
I really like this shower cream because it smells really really nice and I feel like it made my skin softer and nourished it. The only downside is that it really stings on freshly shaven skin and I wonder how bad it would be for a person who has really sensitive skin in general.
I recommend it, but be careful!
Original source a company who specialise in toiletries containing 100% pure essential oils. They do not test on animals and use no animal products as ingredients. Don't be fooled into thinking there are no chemicals in the product as it's not the case. They have a nice flash website, featuring lots of information (but sadly no more free samples), available here: http://www.originalsource.co.uk/
Usually the look of original source products is one of vibrance with bright colours sometimes bordering on neon, however with vanilla milk & cocoa shower gel this is not the case. As with all original source products it features the angular, clear, upstanding plastic bottle and this allows the brown cream (probably the only way to describe the consistency of this shower gel) inside. Some people may find this a negative and not fancy a brown bottle in their bathroom but I find it goes quite well in amongst all the other coloured original source products in my shower.
The main thing to notice with this shower gel is that it smells delicious. The chocolate doesn't smell artificial and the vanilla milk really finds its way through especially in a hot steamy shower. This is not the ideal gel for someone looking for a wake-up kick in the morning and so I tend to use it for showering later in the day or on cold mornings. The scent will wake me in the morning but mildly and so I tend to stay in the shower longer.
This product is really creamy on the skin and moisturises the skin. The creaminess of the butter milk really comes out, but again this is best when you're not in a hurry to get to work. This product does lather up surprisingly well and a little will go a long way.
Available in all major stores, supermarkets, boots Superdrug etc. generally priced between £1.50 -£2.50 for 250ml so not bad value at all.
NB This is the winter 2009 special edition and as the details are no longer on the original source website I imagine it will be gone from stores fairly soon.
Review of Original Source 'Winter Vanilla, Milk and Cocoa Shower Cream'
This Vanilla, milk and cocoa shower cream is the Winter 2008 special edition from Original Source. Being the cheapskate that I am, I purchased this just after Christmas when the supermarket was reducing their winter ranges. It has been sat in the back of the bathroom cabinet ever since and only came to light recently. As far as I recall, I paid in the region of 75p for my bottle of shower cream, I believe that the full price was around £1.50.
**Packaging, Appearance and Scent**
The shower cream is presented in a trapeze shaped, opaque plastic bottle with a black flip open cap. The cap is located at the bottom of the package and doubles as a stand for the shower gel. The container design means that the last drops are fairly easy to get out, but as the shower cream does not have a hook to hang the product up in the shower, I personally do not find it very convenient. This style of bottle is used right across the Original Source range of shower and hair care products, so others must like it, even if I don't!
The package contains 250ml, has a shelf life of 12 months once opened and is made in the UK.
The front of the package has the Original Source brand name, the fragrance and description in brown and black font, with the word "winter" highlighted with a snowflake design. The ingredients and company information are on the reverse, beneath the strap line "The Crop of Winter 08".
The shower cream is a little off putting in colour when you actually see it on your hand. A warm milk chocolate brown shade is the politest way to describe it! The texture of the product is rich and creamy, more like a balm than a shower gel or cream.
The lathering element of the shower cream is not great, I have used better. I do live in a very hard water region of the UK which means getting any bath or shower product to lather well, is a really tough test. The lather was satisfactory here in Kent, but no more than that.
The shower cream smells lovely. It is a warm sweet scent with vanilla high notes and cocoa, cinnamon under notes. As you massage into warm wet skin, the fragrance seems to develop into a very luxurious sweet scent. The scent is fairly strong, yet not over powering and it is not so long lasting on the skin that you wouldn't be able to use a fragrance after your shower.
The product claims to lift senses dulled by the winter blues....as I've been using it in July, I cannot really comment on that statement!
Original Source also state on the packaging that the Cocoa element of the product will leave skin super soft, it does soften skin, however I still need to apply a body lotion after use. In all fairness, that could be just my skin, other users may well find the Winter Shower Cream contains adequate moisturiser for their skin.
**Ingredients and Warnings**
A full list of ingredients is listed on the reverse of the container and on the company website, a break down of what Original Source use in their products can be found.
I will not list all the ingredients here, it would read like a chemist shop stock list and I am sure no one really wants to read it anyway!
Original Source warn that essential oils do not agree with all skin types and that some should be avoided by pregnant women. As with any shower product, care should be taken not to get into the eyes and should it do so, the eyes should be flushed with clean water. Original Source Shower cream is Vegan friendly.
I have sensitive skin, I also suffer from occasional flare ups of contact dermatitis and I am happy to say that I have never had any adverse reaction with any of the Original Source products I've used.

**My Thoughts and Conclusion**
Another winner from Original Source! The shower cream is a luxurious, beautifully scented product which I would be happy to use again and recommend to others. Sadly, as this was the 2008 Winter Special Edition, I do not know whether the shower cream will be produced again. Original Source lines can often be found in Pound Shops so if you see this one, do give it a try, it is certainly worth a go!
Thank you for reading

I found this product much different than the fruity explosions in other shower gels, but I was not disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed using this product in the shower. For a start, I think this product is better to use at night, it's not a sharp smell so does not have that 'waking up' effect as much, which isn't a bad thing for night time showers. The smell is very enjoyable though, especially if you like chocolate, and unline in several other products, with mutliple frangrances, you can smell the vanilla milk.
As with all Original source shower gels, it lathers really well, so little is needed, but unlike the fruit ones which I have had experience with, the smell of this one is not as strong after a few hours, and does not last as long, which may be percieved as a good thing as if you use it, as i do, before I go to sleep, you don't want to be sleeping whilst strongly smelling of something.
Showers don't seem to have the same relaxation appeal as baths; often people don't think that it is possible to relax in the shower and so don't really invest in 'smellies' for the shower. However, this shower gel is definitely luxurious and makes showering into something that is easily as nice as a bath.
I picked this shower gel up in May in Tesco for 99p (it was on offer) and wasn't sure what to expect as I had never tried any of the Original Source products beforehand. It is definitely something I am glad I tried though!
Smell: The first thing you can smell is the cocoa. It is rich and sweet, and while it might not appeal to those who dislike chocolate (although if you hated the smell then why would you buy a chocolate based product?), it definitely appeals to me. When it is in the bottle, it is boredline sickly/sweet but the smell isn't as concentrated when you actually use it. What is also nice about the smell is that it lingers on your body after use; the cocoa smell doesn't immediately go away after being washed off like what happens to so many other shower gels.
Texture: My first impression of this wasn't so positive. While it is creamy and does create quite a nice foam, it's not really as impressive as other products I've tried. I felt that the gel was very runny and often some is wasted because of how fast it comes out of the tube. However, it does make your skin feel smooth so this is only a minor complaint.
Result: I really like this product. While I'm still not a huge fan of showers, this definitely makes the experience more enjoyable. I feel clean and relaxed because of this gel, and frankly its worth it for the smell that lingers on your body afterwards. I should note that I do have dry/sensitive skin so some bathing products often cause my skin to be irritated but this has caused no problems.
I'm not sure if this product is still widely available now (it says it is part of the Winter 08 collection) but other Original Products retail around £1.94. However, as stated I paid under £1.00 for my bottle, because it is only a seasonal product and large supermarkets don't want Christmas products on the shelves when the sun is shining :) Please note that you get 250ml of the gel, and for how I paid for it, I consider this to be a bargin.
Another note is that this is a Vegan product so was not tested on animals/does not contain any animal produce :) This is a delicious smelling, and highly affordable, ethical shower gel.
Original Source products are pretty well know in the UK, and very widely available. They can often be found as part of an offer; I found them as part of a two-for-one at ASDA, so stocked up. All Original Source products I've tried have turned out to be great, but the Vanilla Milk and Cocoa Shower Gel has to be my favourite so far.
The shower gel itself is brown in colour, which is a little off-putting but this is more than made up for by the smell. Upon squeezing the bottle you a greeted by the luxurious scent of chocolate and vanilla- it's almost edible (however, I don't recommend tasting it!). The scent not only lasts during your time in the shower, but also leaves your skin smelling delectable for hours after!
I have sensitive skin in general and am prone to allergic reactions to many toiletries, but have not experienced any problems since using Original Source shower gels. This could be due to the fact that the shower gel boasts naturally sourced ingredients, rather than man-made products to create its scent. The Gel forms a rich laver and a little really does go a long way. They are long lasting and reasonably priced.
Okay, so it's mid-summer 2009 and the bottle reads 'Winter 2008', but that doesn't stop me loving this product any less. The only fear I have is that it may stop being produced come winter 2009!
The function of a shower is best described as 'turning a dirty sleepy something into a fresh new me, ready for the day to come. Naturally, the shower gel is playing a vital role in this context. I take it for granted that any shower gel will get me clean, so it's more important if it makes this progress enjoyable. The special edition Winter from Original Source definitely does that trick, and even better, it seems like the company has decided to continue the vanilla milk & cocoa shower gel even though the winter has long gone!
I would guess that the rich & smooth smell of vanilla and chocolate is a rather acquired taste. Many people still believe that shower gels should smell either refreshingly of citrus or flowery of lavender or maybe roses, and equally many believe that cocoa is restricted to chocolate and desserts. However, this shower gel really oozes luxury, and while you won't experience a kick-start into your day it just delivers some idea of pampering that lifts you above the gray of an average british morning.
On the down side I must admit that brown really is not the best colour for a shower gel...
Apart from that, the Original Source packaging is generally well designed to suit the contemporary designed bathrooms of the design conscious. I would welcome if this 'flavour' would be available in the more environmentally friendly soft pouch package (the one that looks like a refill!) but on the other hand the more conventional hard package might be more suitable if you travel and are worried about spilling liquids inside your suitcase.
Overall, I can only recommend trying Original Source Vanilla Milk & Cocoa, if only to make sure that my favourite fix of limited edition luxury remains available unlimited!
