Sanctuary Salt Scrub
Advantages: Beautiful smell, lasts ages, it actually works!
Disadvantages: Expensive, difficult to open at times
I was introduced to The Sanctuary by my friend from work who said she absolutely swears by it. I decided to give the salt scrub a go because I suffer with ingrown hairs on my legs, and also because I like getting spray tans done and they always tell you to exfoliate first!
I bought the full sized tub from Boots (650g) for £9.99 which I thought was very expensive, but I trusted my friend who had promised amazing results. In hindsight I could have bought the 60g sachet for £1.29 as I had never tried it before. (Not that I needed to have worried because I love the product!)
The scrub comes in a hard clear plastic tub with a metal clasp, a bit like a kilner jar, which looks lovely on your bathroom shelf. I so sometimes find the jar quite hard to open and have to really prise the top off, which can be tricky when you are in the bath and have wet slippy hands!
The scrub itself is quite dry in that it is a lot of salt with a bit of essential oils. This is different to body scrubs I have used in the past that are normally more like a body wash or shower gel with particles in.
You have to scoop some of the mixture out jar, which feels a bit like scooping up wet sand on the beach! You then rub in circular motions over your skin. You must be quite careful and I would recommend doing it in the bath or shower with a lot of water because the scrub can be quite harsh on your skin due to the large particles. For this reason though you can really feel the scrub working without much effort.
In the past I have had to really scrub hard and put in a lot of effort to feel like a product is actually exfoliating, whereas with The Sanctuary Salt Scrub it is very easy. You get great results without much effort.
When you have finished scrubbing you then wash off the salts with warm water, you are then left with the essential oils on your skin which is lovely. It feels a bit like baby oil on your skin, like a layer of 'protection'. After exfoliating I normally expect my skin to feel in need of moisturisation, but with this it is the opposite, you feel like you have moisturised your whole body.
Sometimes it can feel a bit too oily on your skin but you can just wipe any excess off, or rub it in. It is nice to just leave it to work its magic and let it sink into your skin.
The smell is really beautiful - I can't really describe it, but it is the same as some of the other products in the range. It is very relaxing and it reminds me of a spa. The smell lingers in your bathroom after you have used the scrub, and also on your skin which is great.
After using this scrub my skin seems to really glow, it gets rid of the top layer of dead skin cells very effectively and you can clearly see the results (as well as feel them). I no longer suffer from ingrown hairs and my skin is super soft! I think this scrub should be used about once a week, which is what I do. It would be too harsh to use every day.
I wouldn't recommend using this salt scrub at the same time as washing your hair as I have found that you can end up with your hair feeling greasy from the oils. It is best to keep your hair tied back.
I would also be wary about using this scrub on sensitive skin. I once shaved my legs and then the next night I exfoliated.... big mistake! It was so painful where I scrubbed on my legs and I came up in a nasty red rash. I would imagine using it on sensitive or sore skin would cause a similar reaction - so be careful!
Somebody mentioned that the clasp on their tub had gone rusty. Mine has been on the side of my bath for about a year now (it lasts a really long time so great value for money, even if it is £9.99!) and still isn't rusty.
In conclusion, this is a luxury product that I believe is well worth investing in. It is certainly much better than other body scrubs on the market, it leaves your skin soft, smooth and moisturised and the smell is beautiful. I would definately recommend.
