“ Brand: Silvatec / Type: Soaps / What it does: Cleanses, „
As I have always suffered from eczema and allergies, I am always interested in any product that looks as if it will offer some sort of relief. I get occasional mailings from a company called Allergybestbuys, and a product called the Silvatec cleansing bar caught my eye. The following writeup is a direct quote from the Allergybestbuys website:
"This new rich moisturising cleansing bar has all the properties of a traditional bar of soap with the additional benefit of pure silver ions.
When exposed to water these positively charged silver particles are released onto the skin's surface and act as an anti-microbial agent, killing 99.9% of germs including Staphylococcus Aureus, the bacterium that causes infections in skin prone to eczema and acne. With regular use the silver remains on the skin to form a long-lasting anti-microbial barrier. The results of tests by Dr Anthony Hilton, director of Biology at Aston University, showed a significant reduction in bacteria immediately after use and further reduction after an hour."
I was disappointed that I could not find any reviews on the internet for this product, but as Amazon were selling it for £4.99 it thought it was worth having a punt on! I had read a quote from someone who had supposedly used the bar and it had cleared up their eczema, so I was keen to give it a go.
The bar is supposed to come in it's own lidded container, but the one I received from Amazon did not. The bar was a pale grey colour, with no scent. The bar does turn a darker grey colour when exposed to the air, as this is due to the nature of the silver ions in the bar, and does not affect performance in any way.
The first thing that impressed me about the bar is the good amount of lather it produced. A little of this goes a long way! The bar is enriched with glycerine and vitamin E to moisturise the skin, but I must admit, I didn't find the bar very moisturising at all. When I used it on my face, it left my skin feeling quite tight and my skin reddened somewhat, so I decided after a few washes to limit use of the bar to the less sensitive areas of my body.
Although the bar did absolutely nothing to improve my eczema, I did feel confident that my skin was being protected against bacteria, as the bar leaves a protective layer on the skin. When I washed my hands with the bar, I was confident that I didn't need to use those antibacterial gels that I usually carry around with me. When I used the bar in the shower, I felt a lot fresher after using it and my sweat didn't smell at all. This product would really benefit people with problems with body or foot odour.
I would recommend keeping the bar in some sort of container, as you do get a gunky residue on the sink like you do with all soaps, only in this case, the residue is a yukky grey colour! The product is suitable for anyone over 36 months old.
So in conclusion, this product did not cure my eczema, but is a fantastic product for keeping the skin clean and protected from bacteria. This is especially useful when there are lots of bugs around, and you don't need to be paranoid about touching surfaces in public places. This would be a useful bar for parent of new babies, as they would be confident that they were not passing on germs to their baby. I would definitely buy this bar again for it's antibacterial properties, but if you are looking for an eczema cure, this ain't it, though it may benefit those prone to infected eczema conditions.
