Disadvantages: None for me.
~ INFO & PRODUCT DETAILS.. ~
I adore using fruit-scented bath and skin care products and have thoroughly enjoyed trying out many of these types of products from my much-loved ranges at The Body Shop over the years. I do enjoy using body scrub products in the bath too, and this review focuses on my experiences of using "The Body Shop's Mango Body Scrub."
The product is, I believe, only available to buy in one size of tub which is a very generous 200ml in size. I believe I paid around £6 for this tub as part of a promotional offer, which I think offers great value for money, especially as you only need to use a small amount of scrub with each use so the tub lasts for months on end. The normal price is more expensive at £12.50 and you can purchase the item in branches of The Body Shop, or online at their website at www.thebodyshop.co.uk, where postage costs usually apply.
It might be worth noting that there is a small selection of co-ordinating toiletries in The Body Shop's "Mango" range, and these include a fragranced Body Butter, as well as a scented Bath and Shower Gel.

~ MY EXPERIENCES.. ~
I was drawn to this particular Body Scrub for two reasons; firstly, I adore mango and find the scent to be wonderfully refreshing and really rather uplifting, truth be told. Secondly, I suffer from troublesome skin that will become very dry, with small 'rough' patches that appear on my upper arms. These are unsightly at best, but will often become very red and sore if they are allowed to become drier than usual. I was drawn to the statement on the lid of the Mango Body Scrub that informed me the product was suitable for "Very Dry Skin" which struck a chord with me given the problems I suffer from in terms of my own skin, and I couldn't wait to try it out.
The packaging for the Mango Body Scrub is pretty standard with a product like this one, in my experience, comprising of a large circular tub that is made of see through plastic on the bottom, through which I can easily see the thick scrub contained inside. There is a circular lid on top of the tub and this is made of robust plastic in a bright shade of yellow, with an attractive image of mango appearing on the top. I find the lid screws off the bottom of the tub very easily, and I have had no issues with doing this for myself, even though I suffer with limited mobility in my hands.
The scrub itself is what I would describe as being a 'Sugar Scrub' or at least, that is how it looks. The base of the scrub is basically a very dense 'paste' type substance, but with an abundance of sugar-like crystals contained within. These can be difficult to notice at first glance, but when the scrub paste is scooped from the plastic tub there is really no mistaking their presence as the paste feels rather crystallised in its texture. The bright yellow colour of the Mango Body Scrub is extremely attractive and it looks very inviting, in my opinion.
The gorgeous smell of fruity mango is surprisingly strong. This first makes its appearance early on, and is so strong that it is noticeable even as the plastic lid is removed from the large tub. Scooping a small amount of the Body Scrub from the tub allows the scent to become thicker, and this really develops as the scrub is smoothened over my skin. I find that the smell is extremely mouth-watering and is absolutely reminiscent of the gorgeous, juicy aroma of fresh mango - so much so that you could really be forgiven for assuming that fresh mangos were nearby! I find there is nothing 'synthetic' about the fragrance either, which has been the case with other mango-scented body products that I have used before. Some of these felt far too 'perfumed' to be as robust as I would like, and this felt very disappointing. The Body Shop Mango Scrub, in comparison, feels only fruity and fragrant, whilst being extremely refreshing as I had hoped when I purchased the product. I thoroughly enjoyed using the scrub during the summer months last year as it felt so refreshing to use in the milder weather. I had been unsure of the product's versatility and found myself questioning its suitability for use during the colder winter months when they arrived. I can honestly say however, that the fresh, fruity scent of zesty mango that is present throughout the scrub's use, has a wonderful 'uplifting' quality to it that brings a little sunshine during the bleak winter months. There is nothing about the product's scent that I find off-putting or negative in the slightest, and quite the opposite has proven to be true.
Using the Mango Scrub has proven to be very easy, which is ideal for me as I don't like too much 'faffing' about when I am trying to enjoy a relaxing bath. All I need to do is scoop a small amount of the scrub from the plastic tub and smooth it over the skin. Now, I find that the areas that are most problematic for me are around my knees in addition to all of the skin around my elbows, and right up to my shoulders - so, the whole of my upper arms really. These are the areas that cause the most problems for me, so are where I concentrate the use of scrub-based products during my showering/bathing routine.
I find that I only need to dip one fingertip into the tub and this will provide enough of the scrub product that is required to effectively 'smooth' over one arm - any more than this just feels like a bit of a waste. I then tend to smooth the scrub over the skin's surface, taking my time to concentrate on those problematic areas at my elbows and knees by using gentle 'circular' motions to allow the scrub's crystals to work their magic. I find a little GENTLE pressure goes a long way here, as this allows the scrub to really penetrate the skin's surface, but I do take care not to be overly harsh with any scrub product, particularly as my skin is extremely sensitive and will 'flare' easily in protest if I am aggressive during my application technique with such products.
What I have found with the Mango Scrub is that there is a smooth 'oily' essence to be found within the confines of the product's 'body' which at first appears to be purely paste-like in its consistency. This means that when the scrub is 'agitated' on the skin's surface, the process of smoothing the scrub over the skin will allow the oil contained within it to escape, allowing for a deep moisturisation process to take place. At first, the feeling of a light oil 'slick' being left on my skin after rinsing the scrub off took a little getting used to, as I will admit I am not the biggest fan of oil-type products being used on my skin.
I was concerned about my skin feeling greasy or oily after use but this has not proven to be the case at all, mainly because the natural oils contained in the Mango Scrub are so light and delicate. Instead of leaving my skin feeling at all 'heavy' or 'slicked' it feels only smooth and surprisingly soft, with this result being evident before I am even finished bathing.
I find that the application of a good-quality Body Butter product will really increase the moisturisation properties already obtained from the Mango Scrub at this stage, and I tend to apply this immediately after bathing, so as to ensure that none of the scrub's oils are allowed to dissipate or escape from my thirsty skin. In recent times, I have opted to apply the Mango Scrub's 'sister' product, namely The Body Shop's Mango Body Butter, and the use of both products combined has really proven to be a very enjoyable - and worthwhile - skincare experience. I have found that the Mango fragranced Body Butter matches the Body Scrub's gorgeous scent and allows this wonderful fragrance to become thicker, denser, and more robust - which is, of course, very welcome by yours truly, such is the glorious nature of this amazing scent. I find that 'layering' The Body Shop's fruit-scented products in this way is a sure-fire way to experience the glorious scents to their full extent and the scent of the Mango Scrub is no exception to this rule, flourishing beautifully alongside that of it's matching Butter. The scent of the Mango Scrub is evident on my skin for several hours following application when used by itself, but applying the Mango Butter on the skin's surface following bathing allows this scent to last even longer than this, with a delicate trace of it still being evident at night time even when it has been used during my morning bath time. I really like this aspect of the product as I am keen to experience the gorgeous scent as much - and for as long - as possible, so I am more than happy to have it whisper its fruity presence to me throughout the course of the day. I find that this helps create a sort of uplifting quality once again, and for me personally, this has proven very welcome on the cold and dark winter days.
The benefits from using The Body Shop's Mango Body Scrub are evident from a mile off. Not only do I find the product is thoroughly enjoyable to use as part of my skin-care routine, but I find it works extremely well with 'calming' the troublesome dry skin which affects my upper arms. This area is not only completely refreshed and smoothened after use, but the rich oils contained in the scrub go a long way to 'starting off' the vast moisturisation levels that are needed to suitably 'quench' the thirsty, dry skin at these areas. With the skin feeling silky soft and slightly 'slicked' following the use of the product in the bathtub, I am able to capture this sensation completely and allow it to develop further by applying a good quality Body Butter to the areas immediately after use, which allows the skin to take on such a smooth, blemish-free appearance that the untrained eye might question whether there was any indication of dry, flaky skin present in the area to begin with. I can assure you that indeed there was, but these problems have been altogether removed - at least temporarily - by the use of the Mango Scrub, such is its richness and effectiveness at coping with such problems.
I find too that these results are rather long-lasting, so I don't need to use the scrub every day, which suits me down to the ground as it saves me time - and of course, money - in the long run. I am able to achieve these near-miraculous results easily, even if the scrub is only used twice a week or so. I find the results after use will last for a good couple of days before I feel the need to carry out the process again. This result is extremely impressive as far as I am concerned, and it certainly knocks marks off of any rival scrubs that I have used in recent times that I felt needed to be used daily to achieve optimum results.
As indicated previously, I find that a very small amount of scrub will go a surprisingly long way with this particular product, which is testament to me of its quality. It is true to say that the full price of the Mango Body Scrub is rather expensive, but when you consider that I have been using my current tub since June/July of last year this will perhaps make it feel rather more economical that first anticipated. True, I am nearing the end of my first tub now, but I have no complaints at all in terms of the product's price tag and feel it is truly worth every single penny.
As with all products I have used from The Body Shop in the past, I have found there is no irritation or sensitivity to be found to my troublesome, sensitive skin from using the Mango Body Scrub - either during, or after use. Based on my experiences, and given the sensitivity of my own skin, I do recommend the product completely for those consumers who - like me - suffer with problematic skin that will flare easily due to its sensitive nature.
For the reasons outlined in this review, I cannot recommend The Body Shop's Mango Body Scrub highly enough and it is a product that I have already repurchased for myself, based on my positive experiences and the tremendous impact that the product has had on my very dry skin.
Summary: I'd highly recommend it for anyone with very dry skin!
