“ Brand: The Body Shop / Type: Shower Gel / Suitable for: Body „
The Body Shop Earth Lovers range is a bit of a "grower", I have found. I have tried three of the shower gels, and this pear and lemongrass one is definitely my favourite. The packaging is very classy, simple and natural-looking and looks great on my bathroom shelf.
The main advantage of this shower gel is its ingredients - it is soap-free, biodegradable, and doesn't contain any sulphates, parabens or colourants. In addition to this, it has natural extracts of the pear and lemongrass. These attributes about the formula are not only good for the earth (as the earth lovers name suggests - being biodegradable reduces future impact on the planet), but also for the skin - parabens are common preservatives that in recent years have sometimes been associated with skin irritation / allergies (in rare cases). In practice, my family and I have definitely noticed a difference since using this shower gel range - my husband used to sometimes get slight itchiness following the use of popular branded shower gels - either straight after showering or later on in the day after doing anything to raise a sweat. with this shower gel that never happens - there is no itchiness at all. I don't exactly know why, but I can vouch for the fact that for us, these shower gels really make a difference to the comfort of our skin. (we all have "normal" skintype.
The fragrance of this shower gel is lovely - it is very fresh smelling, unisex and quite grassy / planty but without being too earthy. There is a fruitiness, but not a sickly type - it really seems like a pleasant, natural smell. It lingers for a while, and then gently fades.
The formula is a transparent gel, which does not foam as much as conventional shower gels, because of the natural formula. This was originally a bit of a disappointment, but with continued use I don't mind and find that using a bath "lily" (the net-like alternatives to flannels!) really helps to get the foamiest response from this gel. For me the benefits of the gentle formula and natural smell outweigh the lack of great foam.
It's not uncommon for The Body Shop's website to give you a 'free gift' when you spend over a certain amount although it is uncommon that this free gift is a full sized bottle of something. Normally it's just the miniature versions of shower gel/shampoo/face creams but during this particular shopping spree a few months back on The Body Shop website I managed to obtain a full sized 250ml bottle of this Pear & Lemongrass shower gel from their Earth Lovers range absolutely free for spending over £5. I can't say it's a product I'd ever paid a desperate amount of attention to or thought about buying but naturally added a bottle to basket to give it ago with it being free, a bottle of shower gel will always come in handy!
There are seven different scents to choose from in this range namely watermelon and eucalyptus, pear and lemongrass, lemon and thyme, cucumber and mint, apricot and basil, fig and rosemary and an unfragranced one. I love the lemongrass scent thus opted for this particular one although a few of these sound like quite interesting and nice smells to me, something a little different if nothing else! These 250ml bottles cost £5 from The Body Shop.
When The Body Shop calls this range 'Earth Lovers' they aren't messing about! This shower gel is 100% biodegradable, in a 100% recycled plastic bottle and contains no sulphates, parabens, colourants or soap (so it's pretty skin friendly too). I do usually go for soap free shower gels as I find them less drying on my skin and are also safe for the downstairs regions meaning I don't have to fork out extra money for a separate wash just for that purpose! This shower gel also contains fair trade aloe vera which is obviously a good thing too.
The shower gel is presented to us in a slim and tall green tinted plastic bottle with green flip top lid. The sticker on the front displays images of pear and lemongrass at the top, The Body Shop logo, product name and information. On the back is also the usual boring old ingredients list. There are no directions for use for a change though giving me a little more faith in humanity.
Although the main selling point for this particular scent for me was the lemongrass I am quite a fan on the more pear scent this has. There are the faint undertones of lemongrass but the pear scent is definitely the dominant on the two and is really quite nice! It's fruity and refreshing but at the same time subtle and quite 'calm' feeling. I'm definitely a fan of the gentle and natural scent of this shower gel; it's much nicer than overly powerful synthetic fruity smells.
The shower gel itself is quite watering in consistency and colour. It's clear and rather runny and I do have to take special care not to pour too much onto my sponge. Even during the last few bits at the bottom of the bottle there's never any need to squeeze the bottle or vigorously shake it up and down to get the product out, it just tips straight out.
I've used many shower gels from The Body Shop (in fact there are only three I've yet to try and that's because they don't sound very appealing to me) and I generally find they lather up really well. This one makes them all look rubbish though! A small blob is plenty enough to do my entire body; it just instantly lathers into masses of subtle scented foam. If I were to use the amount I use with every other shower gel I could probably get two or three bodies washed with this lather it creates. So, although £5 seems a little expensive, providing you take care not to use more than you need this will last a lot longer than a regular shower gel.
When this lathers up the lemongrass scent does become a little stronger, the pear scent is still the main one but the lemongrass becomes much more detectable and the combination of these two scents works really well. It doesn't create a massively overpowering scent which fills my bathroom or anything but it's still clearly detectable when I'm washing my body.
The results of the shower gel are nice, exactly what you'd expect from a shower gel really! My skin is left feeling refreshed, clean and cleansed and I don't really ask for much else from such a product. It doesn't dry my skin out or irritate it and that subtle scent remains faintly on my skin for a little while although any other product such as body lotion or butter which I put on after my shower will completely overtake that smell left from the shower gel.
I really like this shower gel. Not only is it an eco-conscious product which also uses fair trade ingredients and isn't tested on animals (what's not to like about that?) it's also effective and works for the purpose it is designed for - washing the body. The scent is lovely and something quite different; it makes a nice change from the usual scents I go for! I'd happily fork out £5 for a bottle every now and again to treat myself to something a little different although with the amount of offers on The Body Shop website I don't think I ever really pay full price for anything so will happily be trying about a different scent from this range when I next place an order.
