The Body Shop Sweet Lemon Body Scrub
Advantages: Smells refreshing. Exfoliates well.
While I was stocking up on Christmas presents this year I sneakily bought myself some treats and this Sweet Lemon Body Scrub from The Body Shop was one of the things I got for myself. I got a small tub of this - 50ml sized - but they are usually sold in larger tubs of 200mls.
I like to regularly use body exfoliating products as I do suffer from things like dry skin or patchiness on my body. This tends to be around my shoulders and tops of arms. I also like to exfoliate anywhere where I shave to get rid of flaky skin that has been dislodged by my razorblades. Feet also do well out of exfoliation as I have hard heels that need attention. I therefore thought this product would do well in all these instances.
Before buying the product I had a good smell of it and really liked the fragrance. The consistency of the scrub looked great too, good enough for me to choose to buy it. The product comes in a tub so you can unscrew the top with ease. It has a label on the lid which you can peel back to reveal the ingredients and other information. There are also two labels around the tub which basically state what the product is in dozens of languages and contact information for the brand.
To use this product you have to scoop it out of the tub with your fingers. I really enjoy this sensation as it's quite messy and fun and the feeling of sticking your hands into this gooey substance is quite thrilling. The product is very stiff and has a soft grittiness to it's texture. It does not flow or ooze but sits in peaks like a very thick marmalade.
After getting a lump of this in my fingers I apply straight to the area I wish to exfoliate and rub. You may use this all over the body but not on the face. It does not lather which means the exfoliation process seems to work more effectively. I recently used the Strawberry Body Polish from the same brand and it foams up when using which seems to seperate the exfoliating beads from the skin. This Sweet Lemon Body Scrub is more oil based and when you rub it into your skin you can see the shiny slick of oil transforming your body. The oil base is thick and greasy like baby oil.
The product has a gentle exfoliating style. The grittiness feels like salt (it's actually raw cane sugar). There is also small shreds of lemon peel in there. The product contains soya oil (Fair Trade) and Lemon Seed Oil for softness and fragrance.
I think the product is gritty enough to provide a really good exfoliation but not so gritty that it's unpleasant to use. As the product contains a sugar base it tends to melt away in contact with warm water. I really like that my skin is given this all over moisturisation by the oil in the product. What also tends to happen if you use this in a bathtub is that as you rinse each part of your body the oil sinks into the water and soaks into your whole body - causing your skin to feel soft all over. It removes dead skin and helps soften hardened skin such as on the feet. It also brightens skin and moisturises.
The fragrance of the scrub is a sharp, sweet lemon and orange blend. It is like an alcoholic marmalade aroma. The fragrance is envigorating and refreshing and makes me feel ultra clean and new. I should also make the point that although a lot of cleaning products are lemon based this scrub bears no resemblance to such products and has a sugary lemon scent that is clearly for cosmetic purposes.
The scrub leaves no pieces to pick up at the end of a bath but the extreme oiliness of the product means that there is a kind of oily slick left in the tub which you may wish to rinse away with a cleaning product.
I really like this product. The price for the 200ml sized tub is £12.50 which I find awfully expensive but I would perhaps look for this in the sale or in the smaller sized 50ml or 1.9 Fl. Oz. tub which I have. I would also be thrilled to receive this as a gift.
Summary: A lovely exfoliating product.
