Advantages: Nice scent. Fairtrade

Disadvantages: Overpriced. Poor lather.

Whenever I am in town, I can't resist popping into the Body Shop to check out the delights of the SALE shelf. Well, you don't expect me to pay full price for anything now, do you?

Anyway, I was in luck, because the sale items included various bath and shower gels in fruity fragrances. I'm a big fan of fruity scented bath products, mainly because they are a good way to entice my bath-shy kids into the tub! I had previously read rave reviews on the Body Shop website about this gel so was keen to try it out.

A bottle of the gel varies in cost, depending on which size you buy. I bought the little travel-size bottle, which usually costs £2, but was on sale for £1, not a huge bargain, considering the fact that most supermarkets sell full sized branded shower gels at the same price. However, I like to treat myself now and then and a pound wasn't a lot to pay.

The gel was a lovely pinky-red colour, just the shade you would expect from a product smelling of wild cherries. The bottle is transparent, so you can see the gel inside. I adore anything that smells or tastes like cherry; the sweet scent is very femine and indulgent. When I got the bottle home, I opened it and took a sniff. The fragrance was nice and unmistakably cherry, but it did not smell particularly strong.

Using the product was a bit of a letdown. The water seemed to dilute the scent even further. I was hoping that my bathroom was going to be filled with the scent of cherries, but the smell was very faint, unfortunately. Another downside was that the gel didn't seem to lather very much. I needed to use quite a lot of gel to get any kind of lather. This meant that my 60ml bottle only lasted 3 uses. I was hoping that maybe a little would go a long way, but alas, no.

The product does have a few redeeming features though. Firstly, it is soap-free, which means that it is kind to skin and does not provoke an irritation or dry the skin out. I have very sensitive skin and I was fine with this product. It contains costor oil, which is renowned as a skin hydrator.

Also, as it is a Body Shop product, all of the ingredients are ethically sourced and fairtrade. The bottle is recyclable where facilities exist and should be used within 12 months, not difficult when you only get 3 washes out of it!

In summary, I am going to give this product 3 stars. It smells lovely, is fairtrade and looks great on the bathroom shelf. Unfortunately, it is also a tad expensive for what it delivers and not as good as other cherry-scented brands, such as the wonderful, creamy and pampering Palmolive cherry shower cream, which is quite a bit cheaper. I'm afraid that this is an average product which is overpriced at the usual £4 for a large bottle. I might buy it again on sale, but would not pay the full asking price.

Summary: A little does NOT go a long way.
