Advantages: Nice packaging (except the sticky pads)
Disadvantages: Runny weak products
I was bought a three piece baylis and harding gift set for christmas. I have had hand wash from this company before which was OK and hand cream which was awful so I began using the gift set with caution. In the set is a body wash, body butter and a bath puff sponge on a rope thing. The butter and wash were in the flavour wild rose and raspberry leaf which I thought sounded nice.
Sponge hybrid puffy thing
First to go was the bath sponge puff thing. Made of a foamy material, my daughter soon grabbed it and sunk her teeth into it. I had to throw it away then or she was going to eat it! I have lots of soap and glory puffs which I keep out of reach so it's not a problem.
Body wash
Next up, the body wash. It smelt OK and not too strong and was a pink colour. My first observation was that it is very runny and therefore you use a lot of it each time. It lathers up better using a net puff than the foamy sponge. The bottle is a lid you press to pop up and squeeze the bottle to release the product. I got through it quickly considering it was 500ml. Wouldn't rush to repurchase this but would use it if I got it as a gift again.
Body butter
Finally the body butter (250 ml) again, smells OK, not overpowering. I used it the first time and it was quite runny and thin and not luxurious like you expect a body butter to be. It didn't sink in to the skin that well and seemed to sit on the top of the skin. Packaging wise it comes in a frosted pot with a nice silver lid. My one bugbear with the packaging is the way sticky pads were used to fix this pot into the gift packaging. They were impossible to remove from the bottom of the pot so every time I set it down, it kind of stuck there. This did irritate me quite a bit. I have a lot of body butters on the go, namely soap and glory ones so I used this runny version as a hybrid shaving gel or leg moisturiser and in this capacity using it in the bath it worked rather well!
My thoughts
Overall, this set did not really impress me but I found it all to be OK. I certainly didn't hate it as I used all the products up. They were a bit runny and low quality compared to what I'm used to using. The puff was beyond useless as a sponge or foamer and went quickly in the bin once my daughter had had a few bites.
Price and availability
This set is now reduced to £3 on the Debenhams website but full price was going for £10. Quite cheap for three items. Argos were also selling the same set.
Final thoughts
I really think Baylis and Harding are trying to be a cheap Molton Brown but you really can't compare their products, just the dupe packaging. The brand seemed to be springing up everywhere at Christmas time so you might find yourself owning some of their products by default as the packaging looks so nice, people assume the contents must be too. I find they are mediocre and pretty watered down generally and although I didn't mind the two products in this set I do prefer other body butters and shower gels out there.
Summary: Not impressed
