The Wahl Colour Pro Styler is a complete hair cutting kit. It is a mains operated hair clipper that can be used at home. It is blue in colour and comes with coloured guide combs to make hair cutting easier.
~ What is included in the box? ~
In the mainly black cardboard box you will find a ... total 15 items plus an instruction manual. You get the blue coloured hair clipper, a pair of scissors, a comb, a small bottle of lubricating oil, a little brush and ten coloured guide combs. It has everything you need to start cutting hair as soon as you get it home.
~ Why did I buy it? ~
I bought the Wahl Colour Pro as I needed a replacement for my previous Wahl clippers, I decided to stick with Wahl after buying a few different makes over the years which have been good for one hair cut before giving up, my previous Wahl clippers had been handed down to me by my Nan after she upgraded to a new pair and I had those clippers for about five years, they still worked but it was taking longer and longer for me to complete a hair cut as they weren't as sharp as they originally were, they probably would have done for a few more uses but I thought it best to replace them sooner rather than later as I cut my children's and hubbies hair at home.
I really enjoy cutting and styling hair and I did complete a year and a half of hairdressing training in college a few years back but I never completed the entire course as I got pregnant and I basically couldn't do anything without being ill! I never got around to going back to it although it is something I would love to do. So it makes sense for me to cut their hair at home as I am more than capable of doing it and it saves us a fortune!
I didn't want to go for a cheap set but after seeing these on offer in the Argos catalogue and knowing they are a brilliant brand I went and bought them. At the time they were on offer from £24.99 to £12.99 but I can see that they are now priced at £13.99 and that is their regular selling price. So they are a very decent price indeed.
~ Are they any good? ~
Yes they certainly are good. Having used them numerous times now I think I can give them a pretty thorough review.
My hubby has really thick hair that he likes to keep short with a 'farm' cut - Short back and sides, to do this I used a number 2 grade comb which is the purple comb and clip this onto the clipper blades, I push the lever on the side back so the blades are at the lowest position and slide the button to the on position, the clippers then buzz into action and are ready to use. After completing this part I change guides to a number 4 which is the browny/orange colour guide comb to start the blending in, after that I change down to the number 3 which is dark blue and finish the blending. I then use scissors to cut the top of his hair and when complete I use the clippers with no guides on it to square off the back and the cut is complete.
I use my own professional scissors as I don't find the ones in the kit to be of a great standard, they are fine for beginners and are not too sharp but I am used to using my own scissors so these never feel quite right!
With my children I follow the same routine as my hubby but my eldest will often want to change his hair style so I may use different grade combs for this.
For the purpose of this review I have just cut my hubbies hair using the clippers for the complete style. I have managed to quite easily do a farm cut using grades 2, 3, 4 and 8. I used the lower grade guide combs on the back and sides of his hair and then used the number 8 which is pale blue in colour for the top of his hair and it worked really well. I did use my thinning scissors to complete the cut but it wasn't too bad without them.
Using them in that way it would be quite easy for a novice to get the hang of them and end up with a decent hair cut, but you would need a willing guinea pig!
~ Overall Opinion ~
I am really satisfied with these clippers, I have used them no less than 20 times now already and have never encountered any problems what so ever with them. They are very sharp and make cutting hair a simple task, the blades are made from a high carbon steel that have been precision ground to help them stay sharp for longer.
They are quite heavy to hold, but I much prefer that in a clipper than the more lightweight ones as I feel the weight gives me more control over them.
The clippers come with two tapered guide combs for use around the left and right ear however I have never used these in any clipper set and don't really know their function if I am honest!
The coloured guide combs make it easier to pick up whichever number you need without having the need to peer at them closely for the number, the numbers run down the front of the clippers so you can see at a glance what number comb corrosponds with each colour.
The simple to operate thumb adjustable taper lever makes it easy to add half numbers to whatever guide you are using.
At the low price these are brilliant. I would go as far as saying they are professional quality clippers at a budget price.
I find them great, they have encountered no problems at all and I would recommend cleaning and oiling them after each use to keep them in tip top condition. I cut every ones hair and then oil them before putting them away and this has kept them working perfectly.
Some clippers can pull on the hair and end up hurting the person however I have had no complaints with these so I can say they are great.
The only thing I would recommend is that you make sure the guides are properly clipped onto the clippers before putting them to the hair as the last thing you want to happen is for the guide to fall off and the bare clippers leaving a 'nice' bald patch!
I have never had this happen as I double check the guide is secure for this reason!
Oh, and they have a good length cord which is easy to work with!
