BaByliss 7435U Easy Cut Hair Clipper
by Zmugzy Other reviews have argued that the Babyliss 7435U rotary hair trimmer is a rubbish gadget. I think that this is a bit unfair. It's important to remember that with this trimmer it requires a bit of practice and it's important to follow the instructions regarding cutting technique. There are also one or two other important factors that ... might determine whether this trimmer can give you a decent haircut. I've used a couple of hair trimmers in the past and they were of the conventional type - those with the straight cutting edge. The problem with the straight bladed trimmers is when it comes to shaving the back of the head. Unless you have someone willing and brave enough to help you it can be a bit tricky. That's one reason I decided to give this circular innovation a try. I seem to remember the manufacturer's blurb suggesting that this device would make shaving the back of the head a lot easier. On first sight and touch it seems to be a well designed device with a nice weight to it. It's easy to grip firmly in one hand, which means you can position it around all areas of your head including the back of your head. I would suggest that this rotary trimmer is only really suitable for cutting your hair if you want it short all over and of the same length. There are two circular graded attachments that snap onto the round body of the trimmer providing 6 cutting grades in total. Grades 1 to 3 can be found on one attachment and grades 4 to 6 on the other. Once an attachment is clipped into place you have to twist it whilst using a safety lock in order to get the setting you want. I generally only use the 1 to 3 attachment for the shortest hair cut. I would imagine it being very difficult to get an even cut using grades 5 or 6. As mentioned earlier using the trimmer requires practice. It's important to use a circular motion as you move the trimmer around your head rather than a sweeping motion from one side to the other. As a precaution you might want to use one of the higher grade settings for a longer cut first. Then if you make a mistake you can go to a shorter grade and repair or hide the damage. After the first trim you might miss some longer hairs but you just have to keep going over the same area carefully until all stray hairs are cut short at an even length. I can get quite a good finish to the top and sides of my head... almost professional. However, I would say that this rotary trimmer is most suitable for people with rounder heads as opposed to angular heads... if you know what I mean. More suitable for a Wayne Rooney type than a Ronaldo I would say (not that I could ever imagine those two cutting their own hair). I am more like a Ronaldo (in terms of head angularity rather than good looks and football skills). To extend this theory further the trimmer is probably better suited to younger heads as a child's head tends to be more round than an adult's. Here it's also worth mentioning that the trimmer represents a safe way to cut as opposed to using scissors. However, getting back to head shape, I have found it particularly difficult at times to achieve an even cut length at the back of the head, especially just above the nape. This is unfortunate as I can easily reach the back of my head with this trimmer and cover the whole region. But once or twice whilst attempting a number 2 cut I unintentionally made a spectacular zigzag bald patch at the back. The only way to repair such damage was to adjust the attachment to the lowest grade possible and go extremely short all over. Hence I spent a week looking like a prison inmate. So in order to cut your hair at the back with this trimmer you'll probably still need assistance from a willing friend/partner. Of course if the mullet ever comes back in to fashion (which I doubt) or if you're a WWF wrestler then this won't be a problem because you would no doubt leave the back to grow long. There is an extra straight bladed trimmer (as pictured) included in the box. This is to trim those parts that the rotary trimmer can't reach such as around the ears or doing your sideburns if you're Bradley Wiggins fan. This small trimmer has quite a small cutting head of about 1 inch in length, but works really well. It comes with its own grading attachment with grades 1 to 6. It requires two small batteries that were supplied with the unit upon purchase from Argos. It's important to keep both trimmers well oiled before use if you want them to be durable. A small bottle of oil comes with the kit for this purpose. You will also receive a small pair of ordinary scissors, a long slim plastic comb that inevitably breaks in half and a rather crappy nylon bag to store everything in. Cleaning the trimmer is quite straight forward although a little awkward at times. After a trim I tend to give it a gentle tap and then wipe the interior with a damp cloth. You won't get rid of every hair but regular cleaning and oiling is important to make sure the blades don't get clogged. The hair trimmer is easy to charge. The power cord can be fitted easily and safely into the charging point and the plug is not too bulky. After the first charge, subsequent charges take only an hour or so and each charge should last you seven haircuts at least. The BaByliss 7435U hair trimmer cost me £44 from Argos. At the time of writing they are now selling a newer version - the 7545U for the same price, but I'm sure many of the points outlined in this review will still be relevant. The BaByliss 7435U certainly has it's good points but it may not be the ultimate solution for a DIY haircut - in fact I don't think there is one yet. It didn't really solve the problem I wanted it for - to provide an easy method for cutting hair at the back of the head. However, I still try, and I'd still probably recommend this trimmer... at least for round heads on a budget. Read the complete review |

Remington HC365 Hair Clipper
by Flukepiestalker Why I bought this particular set: ======================= It is a fact that I would rather go to the dentists than the hairdressers - for a start I never know what to say when asked 'how do you want it cut?'. Even with hours of extensive plastic surgery first, I'm never going to come out looking like Brad Pitt, so ... generally my answer was 'just make me look smart for work'. Recently though, I have started swimming (regularly) to get rid of some mid 30's 'podge', so my new answer became 'I'll have a grade 1 all over'. In other words, just shave it all off as it makes it a lot easier (and less time consuming) to 'dry' my hair afterwards, when there isn't any to dry! It also means less drag in the pool. It then occurred to me - why pay a tenner a pop to get my hair cut (and thoroughly hate the experience) when I could just do it myself, at home (whilst watching the football) with a pair of clippers. So armed with a limited budget and not a lot of clue, I went for a pretty 'basic' option with these. I had heard of 'Remington' before so thought for £25 I couldn't really go wrong. Three sets of 'hair' cuts and I'd be up on the hairdressers fees anyway! General Observations & Maintenance: =========================== I should mention that I have very straight and baby soft hair (when not 'gelled'), which may give me slightly rose-tinted spectacles when reviewing this product. For me, these clippers just glide through my hair like a knife through butter, but I'm not sure how they would perform on very tightly packed or curly hair. The clippers design is curved, which makes them easy to hold, though they are very rigid, which make it harder to reach some parts of your head - always check with someone that you haven't missed a bit, before going out in public! The trimmers are also surprisingly heavy - I dropped them on my foot the other week and I think I still have the bruise - which doesn't make them easy to transport and definitely 'out' when thinking of trips abroad as they will increase your luggage weight quite significantly. They are easy enough to clean - I tend to run the blades under a tap (without them being plugged in of course) and attack them with the cleaning brush provided (not mentioned below) after each trim and it seems to work. Accessories: ========= Advanced Ceramic-coated blades infused with Silica for hardness and resilience - no idea what that means in real terms, but the blades have been strong enough to cut my hair on at least a dozen occasions now and show no sign of wear and tear - I've also run them under the tap a few times to clean them and again, they look as good as the ever did. The trimmers themselves have also been 'bounced' down the stairs on a couple of occasions, and again they show no sign of breaking. Solidly built - which is a really good thing! Taper level for cutter length adjustment - I think all trimmers tend to come with this - it's a lever at the base of the trimmer which allows the tapering of hair from the top. I think it makes the 'cut' more even and I've certainly had no problems with people telling me I have a 'wedge', which would happen if it didn't work. Cord / cordless for up to 40 minutes usage - If you are a bloke spending more than 40 minutes cutting your hair, then you have issues. Perfectly adequate. The cord is fairly long too (about 1.5 meters - though not measured), so you can relax on the sofa and watch TV whilst pruning. Six attachable combs - These are good and easy to fit onto/remove from the trimmer blade. Warning though - they are made of plastic and you shouldn't leave them on the floor as they don't survive being trodden on - I am missing a number 7 because of this. With the swimming - I tend to just leave it as a grade 1 or 2 - as I find anything over about 4 makes me look like a fuzzy microphone. There are grades 1-8 spanning 3-24 mm in length, so you have a decent choice. Detail trimmer - this is great for around the ears and for doing my 'goatie' and gives very straight lines, though it can be dangerous if not used correctly! I have managed to cut my chin on several occasions using it, so definitely an item to be wary of! Sectioning clips - never used them and I think have been lost due to being quite small. Ear guides - again, a bit pointless in my book - I find it a lot of hassle trying to line these up whilst trimming - I'd rather get it over a done with in one big swish! Scissors - I'm not sure if it was just the set that I got, but I've won sharper scissors from pulling Christmas crackers. These were seriously blunt - so much so that my 2 year old daughter uses them for cutting paper. Neck Brush, cap, and cape - for that authentic barber shop experience. I'd rather wash off the excess hair in the shower - so again these items have become painting accessories for my daughter! Combs - not sure why these are included either as I shave off the hair (and thus it no longer needs combing). I suppose if you never owned a comb before now, they could be useful as you don't really want to use these clippers on tangled hair. Storage case - this is an excellent idea, even if I don't use it (see what happened to my grade 7 attachable comb). Handy for keeping my wife happy too (she hates clutter). Mine also came with a two year guarantee, but I think it may already be out of that warranty period, or getting very close, and it shows no signs of any ware or tear, so I'm hoping I won't be needing it. Overall Summary: ============= I have definitely made my money back (several times over) by not needing to go to the barbers and, despite my best efforts, are robust enough to last for several years. The only negative point about these clippers (and a shaved head) is the fact that my wife now thinks I look like a criminal. I keep telling her that hair loss is hereditary in my side of my family and that I am just getting ahead of the game, but it doesn't seem to be working. I fear that they are so good that I may come home one day to find they have been 'lost'! Read the complete review |

Babyliss 7890U I-Trim Stubble
by Thebaker50 I should probably start out by saying I am one lazy man! I really am not the sort of person who shave every day, I shave more towards once a week. I found that using conventional razor blades, or my phillips shaver (I will review this at a later date), did not work for me (yes they gave a close shave, closer than this... but they were ... very painful to use when you have any decent amount of facial hair). Also, because i only shave once, maybe twice a week, I would look very odd one day having a clean shave, and the rest having a bit of a beard. Most people who only seen me occasionally would comment on how i can never keep the same look! So I stated looking for a trimmer, and i found one called the barba on amazon. However, i saw the babyliss i-stubble in costco for around 30-35 pounds (it was one special offer), and came with a 3 year warranty, so i couldnt resist! Anyway, opening the packet, you have a shaver, some oil, a brush and a charger. After a long charge (its like 20 hours), i was ready to go. The device is very simple to use. You simply press the up or down arrow, and the little head has a machine which somehow makes the shaver bit move away/towards the head, getting the length you want. You are supposed to be able to go from 0.2mm to something like 5 mm (i leave it on 0.4mm), but i am not totally convinced it is the most accurate method? Anyway, its pretty sweet, you can get the exact thickness of beard you want. Another nifty feature is that the head moves independently from the body for a short arc. You may be thinking what is the point in this, but it means when you drag it along your face, it contours really nicely. It does make a decent difference, with my philshave, I would have to keep contorting my face into weird faces to get it to work, no need with this. The shaver also cuts cleaner, and doesn't "pluck" the hair out, it actually cuts them (unlike my philishave, however maybe with time the blades will become dull? on the packet it says that they are meant to keep their sharpness for a long time). Also the head can be flipped up, for a finisher should you need one (i only really use this near my mostache, i can't get to some hairs with the head on, because it just catches on my nose... however this is a problem for everything i use (blades, philishave), i think i must just have a weird nose! Battery life is very good (but i have not had it for a very long time, about 3 months or so, maybe over time the battery will weaken?). Note that you can do a super fast charge (so a 2 minute charge to charge battery just enough for a shave, or you can do a full battery recharge (which i think is about 8 hours), or you can run it off the mains, it really is up to you. The onyl bad points i have on this are: Price, it ain't bad, but i only got it cheap because it was on special offer. Expect to pay in the region of 45-50 quid for yours. Robustness: although nothing has gone wrong with mine yet, i worry that if you were to drop it on its movable head thing, it would just break clean off. Near nose area: as previous mentioned But these really are little niggles compared to the whole of it, for that reason I give it 5/5 Read the complete review |
