I bought my husband the Remington MB4010 Horizon Beard Trimmer as a stocking filler for Christmas 2012 as I managed to get it on Amazon very cheaply - £9.99 including next day delivery. I've certainly seen it in high street shops like Boots, Superdrug, Argos and independent chemists for £10 - £15 which is certainly still a bargain price.
He doesn't have a long beard, and sometimes he doesn't have a beard at all, so I wanted something cheap and cheerful but with a bit of versatility. I was happy with the Remington, especially with the price and it being a well known name.
So, what comes in the box? You get the Remington MB4010 Horizon Beard Trimmer, a set of 2 x AA non rechargable (cheap!) batteries, the instructional manual and a warranty card.
One thing to note is that the box is just cardboard there is no hard plastic case or even a soft pouch type bag, but for the price I didn't mind too much and ended up buying a cheap black zip up case from the pound shop to store the unit in. This means it is kept clean and can be used for travel.
The unit looks pretty good, it has steel blades covered by an adjustable black plastic shield (0.5 - 16.5mm cutting rangea), it's styled in black plastic with a silver Remington logo and a silver on / off push up switch.
It's very very easy to use, simply adjust the shield to your preferred length and switch on, it trims well and usually only takes 5 or so minutes to do a whole beard. It can be used for moustaches, goatees, sideboards and so on, it gives a neat clip and can be used right side back for detailing.
There are a few small downsides to the Remington MB4010 Horizon Beard Trimmer, with it being a budget model, firstly the batteries are not rechargable (though you could purchase rechargable AAs and a wall charger to save on battery costs), and you cannot run it off the mains when it runs out of battery and you don't have any in the house. Secondly there is no way of collecting the clippings so it makes a real mess of the sink!
But the good sides make up for it I think. It's versatile, with the 6 preset length settings, and it also has self oiling and self sharpening blades which means there is very little maintainance required other than a wipe at the end of use. It also comes with a 2 years manufacturers warranty which is excellent.
Overall for a budget beard trimmer which has the versatility of the adjustable head and the ease of use you can't knock the Remington MB4010 Horizon Beard Trimmer especially if you can pick it up for under a tenner. It would make a nice little gift and is great for travel, too. Overall, I'll give it four stars out of five and recommend it as a budget beard trimmer. If you're looking for bells and whistles you may need to spend more but for a basic trimmer the Remington MB4010 Horizon Beard Trimmer is a great little buy.
