For Christmas this year, I received this Baylis and Harding Mandarin and Grapefruit Gift Set as a gift from a friend at work. It was right up my street as a gift, as I love little luxuries for my bath and shower time and this looked perfect, containing a large 500ml bottle of body wash, a 500ml bottle of shower gel, a 300ml hand and body lotion, the set completed with a body buffer sponge. I can't find the particular set that I have anywhere on sale today, but it seems Debenhams sell a similar range of gift sets, containing similar items from the Mandarin and Grapefruit range for around £12. The one shown in the picture is a smaller gift set available from the same range.
The set I have came in a large box which I thought made it look high quality and a nice gift. Inside the box, the body wash and shower gel came in large transparent bottles, with the hand and body lotion in a non- transparent tube. It did look like a very nice gift and I was pleased when I received it. The whole set is in a gold and cream colour scheme, with the box being a cream colour with gold writing emblazoned onto it. The shower gel and body wash are a golden colour too, with one slightly lighter in colour than the other. The hand wash, although it can't be seen through the bottle, is white in colour when squeezed from the tube.
I have just finished using both of the large bottles from the set, which lasted in total around 6 weeks in our bathroom, including use by my husband too. The Mandarin and Grapefruit is a very appealing scent. I found it to be just the right strength with it being strong enough to be noticeable while in use and after use but not overpowering in any way. I found the scent lasted around an hour or two after using which is something I always look for in my beauty products.
The consistency of the shower gel in particular is quite gloopy and I found it blobbed out of the bottle rather than ran out of it which is good in some respects as I didn't found it ever ran off my fingers quickly, but it's thickness did make it fairly difficult to rub into my skin properly. The body wash had a similar consistency, although I wouldn't say it quite as thick.
The hand and body lotion is a different story. I'm still using this part of the set but I've found that to be quite runny really, more runny than I would normally like with a lotion which I feel should be quite thick in consistency to make it easier to handle. It's runny consistency does make it quite difficult to control when rubbing into the skin, although I do find it rubs in fairly easily if I handle it quickly and it soaks in well. The scent is also very appealing and again not too strong but strong enough to linger for a few hours after using.
The bottles of the shower gel and body wash caused a bit of a problem. Both bottles came with a screw top lid which made them very awkward to use in the shower. The lids are small too and I must have dropped the lids nearly every time I used them - in the end, we decided to leave the tops off the bottles to make them easier to use. Not ideal really, as I personally feel that it makes them more likely to attract germs to them. The hand and body lotion also came with a screw lid although it's not been such a pain to use that providing I used a small bit at a time.
The body buffer sponge is a nice extra to have too and has lasted quite some time without falling apart, something I find happens with these quite soon after using so the one with the set seems to be of good quality. It comes in a beige colour, which complements the colours of the other items in the set.
I do have fairly sensitive skin which doesn't always agree with beauty products but none of the items in my set seem to have caused me any issues.
I would recommend this range on the whole, although I was slightly disappointed with it as I expected so much from it's high quality appearance. It's a nice set and I'm glad that I've had the opportunity to try it but I'm unsure whether I'd purchase the set or items from it for myself in the future because I feel I've used items from other ranges such as sanctuary that have been better on the whole. Three stars is a fair rating - ok but not fantastic.
Thanks for reading :o)
Baylis and Harding Hand Gift Set
Hand Wash 500ml
Hand Lotion 500ml
Clear Tray to stand them on
Baylis and Harding are a manufacturer producing lovely to use soaps and lotions that look and seem to be so much more expensive than they are. I currently have the Rose & Raspberry Leaf Hand Wash as well and have used the Sweet Mandarin and Grapefruit Hand Wash for a while now. However under review here is the Sweet Mandarin and Grapefruit Gift set comprising of the Hand Wash and Lotion that I was lucky enough to receive for Christmas:
Presented in clear plastic containers with push down dispenser, these products have an expensive luxurious appearance despite their generous proportions. The clear plastic is overlaid with gold coloured text and scrolling and the delicate hand wash and effective lotion have a luxurious feel and fragrance. The gift set version has the products standing in a clear plastic holder and packaged in a yellowish coloured box and encapsulated in clear cellophane film.
I was delighted to receive this set for Christmas as I really love the decadent impression of the hand wash, the gentle cleansing action and delicate natural fragrance. The hand wash is pumped out as a pea sized portion of transparent yellow pale lemon gel that is quite adequate to thoroughly clean hands and nails and leaves a subtle pleasing fragrance.
The lotion is slightly off white in colour and carries the same subtle fragrance. I am new to the hand lotion and will be buying it again. The 500ml size will last a good few months yet though and is so convenient to use as it also features the handy portion control of a pump dispenser. It smoothes into my skin easily and leaves them gently scented and soft and subtle. I only use the one pump as the fairly thin lotion spreads well and covers and absorbs into my skin and I use it a couple of times a day when I am at home and when I get home when I have been at work all day.
The holder is a nice touch, but as I use this product in my bathroom, I don't have room for it where the sink is. However, it is lined up as a seedling tray for the spring and will be a subtle stylish addition to my window ledge with seedlings in later in the spring.
Price and Availability:
I buy my Baylis and Harding hand wash in Sainsbury's at just £2.75 for a 500ml bottle. The sets are a little more expensive and I remember seeing them in Sainsbury's too. I have just looked on-line and direct from Baylis and Harding the Lotion and hand wash are £6.00 each or the set is a whopping £36.00. At that rate buy them individually (from Sainsbury's) and package them up nicely yourself. There are various sets available from Amazon but I could not see this one from my quick perusal.
I have been using the hand washes for a while now (over 12 months anyway) and the hand lotion since 2nd January. These make a gift I am delighted to receive. They are an expensive looking gift to give and they do work tremendously well. I particularly like that the hand wash does NOT dry out my hands whilst it DOES clean them and the fragrance is tasteful, fabulous and subtle. The lotion is quick and easy to use and I am enjoying the experience of a hand lotion from a dispenser rather than battling with a little tube.
I received this shower and lotion set for Christmas. I enquired where it was bought from, after use, to determine whether it was a cheap brand without offending the giver. It was bought from Tesco.
The box looked beautiful, the bottles were flimsy plastic, the shower gel bottle had split when I dropped it in the shower - shows how flimsy it is. I washed all over with 10p size blob, there was a faint scent of grapefruit. After a half a bottle (had to use more so the liquid wouldn't seep out of the breakage where the plastic split in the middle) there was the same faint smell of grapefruit but nothing else. I assumed that as a wearer, the nose would get used to the scent thus be ineffective at detecting any delectable fragrance. I then lathered the lotion all over my body to maximise the fragrance of lingering. Couldn't smell anything.
Came downstairs and no one mustered up any 'ooh's and 'ahh's as they tend to do whenever I buy or use scented products. I had to literally strip and have my husband sniff me all over to see if he could smell any outstanding aromas but nothing was detected.
I don't know if I received a faulty pack, nor how much it was, even if it was selling for a £1, it still would be a waste of money. Better to use that £1 and buy a pack of 4 Shields soap bars from Tesco, the scent is obvious
I am a big fan of the Baylis and Harding products as I think they have a really nice range of soaps and lotions at a really good price. I was in Sainsburys the other day looking for a birthday gift for a neighbour and came across this gift set and just had to get it. Firstly the gift set was only £5 (I think Sainsburys have started to do their Christmas gift selection and this was one of the ones on offer) so I not only got her one I got me one too.
The set was really nice looking and good enough for a present for my friend. The gift pack comes in a really nice square cardboard box with a nice ribbon handle at the top. The top of the box is a grey colour and the bottom of the box is a cream colour and has the Baylis and Harding design of round gold mosaic discs. The middle part is clear see through plastic so you can see the bottles inside. It makes a lovely looking gift and looks way more expensive than the £5 I paid for it.
The set comes with 4 different bottles of Baylis and Harding products all in the 100ml size. This is a smaller size bottle than the regular one but to have as little bottles around the house is quite nice. Plus I think this is a nice way of testing the products if you haven't used them before and decided if you like them before you buy the big size versions. Plus, they are nice for putting in an overnight bag if you go away as they don't take up too much room.
The bottles included are:
A Luxury Shower Cream. This is slightly cloudier than the body wash so its almost as if it has some thick cream in it which is nice to know. A balancing body wash, a moisturising hand and body lotion and a body smoothing polish. The body smoothing polish is a lovely product, you can see the bubbles in it, you are told to massage it into your skin and then wash off. I think the bubbles give the opinion that it will be really light and aerate your skin and give it that lovely moisturised feeling.
The scent is absolutely amazing, very fresh and fruity and one of the reasons why I bought this gift pack in the first place as I have tried this fragrance before and absolutely love it.
All in all a nice gift set to give to someone or keep for yourself!!
You may recall that I recently reviewed a Citrus Lime and Eucalyptus gift set belonging to the Baylis and Harding range, so you will be aware that it was very disappointing and that I awarded it only 2 stars. For my birthday in September of last year I received another gift set from this range, namely Sweet Mandarin and Grapefruit and this review discusses my experience of using it. To be honest, after my sheer disappointment with the Citrus Lime and Eucalyptus fragrance I wasn't in a rush to use these products, so banished them to the back of my wardrobe for a good couple of months and it was only when I read some positive reviews on the hand wash that I decided to try them out.
APPEARANCE OF THE PRODUCT
My products are identical to those shown in the photograph that I provided to Dooyoo as above, where they were initially presented in an extremely eye-catching gift box, which was manufactured from transparent plastic with a sturdy cardboard base and tied with a beautiful ribbon displaying the Baylis and Harding name. Inside the gift set are three products and I will discuss each of these individually.
REJUVINATING BODY WASH
The body wash is presented to us in a transparent plastic container and identical to that of the Citrus Lime it is somewhat flimsy. However, whilst the appearance of the lime fragrance is not particularly eye-catching the Sweet Mandarin and Grapefruit looks simply delightful. The body wash is a pale yellow colour with the flip up top being a shiny gold. My initial thoughts when carefully scrutinising the packaging were that the product was superior and somewhat luxurious. We are provided with 500ml of body wash and on the front of the container we are informed that it contains vitamins A, B and C and that this is a balancing body wash. You may recall that in my previous Baylis and Harding review I mentioned that we had been provided with an expiry date, something I found rather strange on a beauty product, particularly as it was in addition to the logo where we are advised to use the product within a specific timescale after opening. However, there is no expiry date on this product and whilst the Citrus Lime needed to be used within 6 months we are informed that the Sweet Mandarin should be used within 12.
To use the wash you initially need to remove the protective foil seal, so don't forget to unscrew the lid and carry out this task prior to use. The wash easily dispenses via the flip up lid, but again I experienced the same problem with this container as I did the previous and that is the lid will not securely clip down. Consequently, the bottle needs to be stored upright after the initial opening. The consistency of the wash is a little too runny for my liking and dispenses rather rapidly, so only a gentle squeeze of the bottle is required. Another problem I encountered was that gaining a firm hold of the flimsy bottle whilst in the shower is somewhat of a challenge, particularly when I have wet and soapy hands.
The fragrance is simply stunning and the aroma of both the mandarin and grapefruit are most definitely evident. I've not known of any other brand to use this delightful combination of citrus fruits, which work perfectly together and provide a very fresh and zesty fragrance making this a well suited product for use in the mornings when you need that extra something to wake you up. The wash lathers extremely easily and feels simply delightful on my skin. I found I only needed to use a small amount, which sufficiently removed all traces of grease and grime and subsequently, left my skin feeling delightful. However, once rinsed away there was no fragrance remaining on my skin; something that I favour in beauty products, particularly as I adore being able to sense them for a good while after bathing or showering. I suffered no adverse reactions when using and for the purpose of this review refrained from using any moisturising products and I can confirm that my skin suffered no redness or dryness. Consequently, if I were to rate this product alone, it would receive 4 stars from me, as I had no choice but to remove one due to the fragrance not transferring to my skin and it being a little too runny. This product is well suited to both men and women due to its' gorgeous fresh and zingy aroma.
INDULGING BODY BUTTER
We are provided with 250ml of body butter, which is presented to us in a very sturdy circular plastic container. Its' appearance mirrors that of the body wash where it looks somewhat superior due to its' shiny golden coloured screw off lid. We are informed that the butter contains vitamins A, B and C, so initial impressions are that this is a rich and very moisturising product. On opening the lid we initially need to remove the large circular protective cardboard covering. However, the moment my fingers touched the edge of the cardboard the one side sunk into the butter, which resulted in it dispersing from the container, so take extra care when attempting to lift away from the product.
The aroma of the butter is simply stunning and perfectly mirrors that of the body wash. It is fresh, zingy and again we are able to witness the delightful combination of mandarin and grapefruit. The butter is white in colour and its' consistency is perfect, so I scooped out a small amount on the tips of my fingers and gently rubbed it into my legs ensuring that I included the dryer areas, such as my knees and feet. It felt cool and wonderfully soothing as it quickly absorbed into my skin and the fresh fragrance was evidence throughout and remained on my skin for several hours after use. A problem I experience with many creams and lotions is that they leave a greasy and/or sticky residue, but this was most certainly not the case with this product, as it always leaves my skin feeling silky soft and smooth and fully moisturised with the added bonus of a gorgeous aroma of both mandarin and grapefruit.
I suffered no adverse effects when using this butter and would advise that the contents of the tub need to be used within 12 months of opening. If I were to rate this product alone it would receive a full 5 stars from me, as it is simply perfect and again suited to both men and women.
As I discussed the washing puff in my previous review I do not wish to be copying and pasting previous text. However, for those of you would did not read my thoughts I would advise that my experience of using the puff was far from favourable, as it has been manufactured from a rather strange substance; something I am unable to identify. Its' texture feels similar to that of a soft polystyrene and it is noisy to use and rather rough on the skin. Consequently, it was discarded after only a few uses when I returned to my favoured net body polisher, which is soft and gentle on my skin. The puff resembles that of a rose and has a double length of twisted cord for you to be able to hang it on your shower hook after use. If I were to rate this puff on its' own, unfortunately, it would receive the minimum amount of stars from me.
My experience of using both the body wash and butter were extremely favourable. I have approximately a quarter of each remaining and I will definitely be replacing both when the containers are empty. As for an overall rating, I am going to give this gift set 4 stars, as I had no choice but to remove one due to the fragrance of the body wash not transferring to the skin. I am not going to remove any stars for the washing puff, particularly as most people would buy this gift set for the beauty items themselves. I have nothing but praise for Sweet Mandarin and Grapefruit and my experience of using these products surprises me, particularly after my very poor experience with using the Citrus Lime and Eucalyptus.
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
At the time of writing (26 January 2011) I would advise that this gorgeous gift set is available on Amazon for £19.99 plus £3.45 postage and packing, which in my opinion is much too expensive. I have not deducted any stars due to the price, as this is down to the trader and not Baylis and Harding, as I am aware that their products are available at a reasonable price. I saw the identical gift set available in our local chemist only a week or so ago where it was reduced to £5.99, so I'm sure you can obtain this at a much more favourable price.
I hope you found my review useful and would thank you for reading.
