Boots No7 Foundation Brush
As you may know, around 8 months ago I was given a Boots No 7 brushes set and though haven been given the exact same name as the one above I think I have a slightly updated / older version as mine is a pale pink colour with a brown bristle brush.
As I received this is a gift set I am unaware as to how much it costs individually, but after looking on the website I think it costs around £12.
As this is a No7 product it does mean that it is exclusive on Boots, though you can often find these items on Boots, also there online store boots.com or Amazon for cheaper, however, there is often a postage charge.
*I would also suggest that you check on http://www.halfpriceperfumes.co.uk/ as they often have No 7 products on here for much lower than the normal retail, so they may also get the brushes on here.*
The brush itself, it a typical sized foundation brush, with quite a thick handle, if this is what you call it? Then goes onto the actual brush itself which does start off squarish, but then very quickly flares out into a sort of semi circle, however, it is much wider / larger than a normal semi circle.
The foundation brush obviously has a purpose, which is to apply foundation, however I also find it works well when using it to apply other items of make up, which I shall go onto to in a minute.
The brush itself is of good quality and it is SO soft, the bristles are very tightly compacted, unlike some of the cheaper ones that look like they have a lot, but in fact are very parsley compacted. The better quality the brush, I also believe gives a much better appliance of the product you are using and a much better 'professional' finished look. Also the softer the brush is, the easier I find it to apply, the make up sort of 'glides' on when using this soft brush, however, which much more brittle brushes it got often feel 'bumpy' whilst applying it.
The bristles also all stay together and when pushed along with the tip of my finger they move altogether and there are no loose ones or sparse ones that stick out in odd directions. This is yet another sign of a good quality brush and is just one of the many reasons I love it. Also the bristles all stick in there shape, so they don't fan out so much that there are gaps inbetween the brush, meaning that there would be a steaminess to your foundation / make up.
When using this brush for the appliance of foundation I was thoroughly impressed. I have used it on both mousse style and liquid style foundation and will let you know how it works on both of these!
Mousse foundation is the one with the slightly lighter texture, almost spongy, so most people would say that it is easier to apply with your fingers, however I decided to give it ago with this brush!
It picked up the foundation much better than expected and when rubbing it on the brush I thought it may go slightly bumpy on the brush and only be smoothed out once applied the face, however, I was impressed to see that it smoothed down the foundation whilst collecting it with my brush!
To apply it felt soft and smooth, also using a brush to apply the mousse foundation I actually found it a lot easier as with fingers it is sometimes hard to blend, however as this brush sort of just 'glided' across my face, as if it was floating it was very easy to use in circular motions in order to blend it.
Mousse foundation is a lot thicker than liquid, so I was a little worried that this brush might give me the 'caked' look, however I was pleased to see that when blended well (which was surprisingly easy with this brush!) that it just gave me a nice, light, matte finish.
I sometimes find that mousse foundation can exaggerate pores / imperfections a little, however, for some reason when using this brush I was able to achieve much better coverage , as it did just glide over these.
After finishing applying the mousse foundation and then looking at the brush I was pleased to see that only a little was left in the brush, admittedly some little clumps of mousse were found within with washing, however, other than this I feel that the mousse foundation transferred well.
Wow, Wow, Wow! If you use liquid foundation and are looking for a new brush (or already have one!) then this is brilliant and gives an absolutely flawless look!
I first applied this foundation to the top of my hand and then rubbed my brush around this in order to pick it up. I was pleased to see that the brush picked up an adequate amount, as with some f/brushes I have had they pick up LOADS of the liquid foundation and I end up looking like a rotten carrot, however, with this one if anything I think it picked up maybe too little.
When I started to apply the brush felt like silk running across my face, also when applying liquid foundation with my fingers I find it sometimes leaves this greasy looking sheen, however when using the brush, despite using liquid foundation it gave me a very matte look.
I feel that the brush did blend the liquid better than the mousse, however, this is perhaps to be expected. I used the brush in circular motions to blend and thought that whilst using liquid foundation it would be more likely for the bristles to become sparse and splay out when using them in circular motions, however I was pleased to see they stayed tightly compacted and still smooth and super soft.
The look I achieved when using this brush is, in my mind, flawless, it does not exaggerate pores / imperfections and you only need a very light amount of the liquid foundation in order to receive a good coverage, which I love as I hate that 'clogged' up feeling you can sometimes get.
When looking at the brush I saw that the very minimal amount was left on and I ran it under warm water (this is the way that I clean them) for a few seconds and it ran clean.
This meant that the liquid foundation had transferred and blended even better on my skin than the mousse and than I would have expected.
Despite this brush being designed for foundation, as I have said I also use it to apply other items of cosmetics and I will tell you how I think it has faired now-
I have used this as a blusher brush on a few occasions and have also been pleased with the results.
I have the powder style blusher, not a cream or mousse, and I used the tip / fan of the brush for the blusher rather than the flat surface, which I used for foundation.
I was pleased to see that it picked up quite a lot of blusher, the reason why I was pleased to see this is that I often have to keep returning to my blusher as my brushes never seem to pick up enough.
I applied this just below my cheek bone, this is because when applied on my apples of my cheek I found it rather hard to 'fill' them all and get a smooth, yet natural line. This is most likely due to the fact that I used the nib of the brush, however, wearing it just under my cheek bones I found worked very well as it was just a thin, natural line I needed, which highlight my cheek bones.
The amount that it picked up was enough to brush up and down one cheek without having any need to return to the palette, which I was very pleased with and was also pleased with end results.
I saw the results that I saw when using it with denudation, which were that all the bristles stayed in a perfect line and that they didn't splay out everywhere.
I think you could probably use this brush to go across the apples of cheeks, however would have to use the flat surface of the brush, rather than the nib as I did.
If I am using a natural colour eyeshadow (nudes and browns) I tend not to worry about doing it too perfectly as it tends to just blend by itself.
As when using these colours I tend to do the whole lid of my eye, when using a small brush I often have to refer to the palette on numerous occasions, however with this brush I find it much more easier.
The brush it very soft, so when using a pressed powder eyeshadow it picks it up very well and you are able to get quite a lot on your brush. My eyelid area seems to be roughly the same size of this brush, maybe a little bigger / smaller, so to apply I simply line the brush up and simply 'shuffle' it from side to side!
When doing this it gives a very subtle effect with the eyeshadow, which is exactly what I want when using a nude colour and I think this actually achieved this better than with a normal eyeshadow brush so I was thoroughly impressed!
I was also pleased to see that almost no eyeshadow was left trapped in the brush, which is always a plus as again it shows it has transferred well, no wastage and less cleaning ;)
8 months on and I am proud to stay I am still in love with this brush and it is still as soft, smooth and versatile as ever. I have not noticed any of the bristles becoming sparse, sticking out in odd places or becoming brittle. They have all stayed in the same neat line, which allows for smoother application of the product and a better end result.
The product is of a very high standard and is so versatile, obviously, some people will just use it as a foundation brush and I cannot rate it enough as just this this, however I have found that it works just as well in other applications of make up if you can't be bothered to get out the other brushes, or simply can't afford more.
As I have said, this product has lasted me 8 months and I can see it lasting me a lot longer, so for £12 I think this is a great buy and it really does achieve flawless results, so despite being a lover of MAC make up brushes the horizon has broadened for me as I now stick to No7 ones as I actually prefer these!
Also, don't feel that you need to use No 7 make up in order to achieve these results, I use a mix of make up including Maybelline, Max Factor and Natural Collection foundation depending on what mood I am in and still can achieve these results - but not without this brush ;)
If for any reason the bristles become inadequate, or it is simply too old, I will definitely be returning to this brush when buying a new one!
