Advantages: Effectively sharpens eye pencils and collects the wood shavings with no mess
Disadvantages: None for me
I experienced a few difficulties in locating the sharpener in the huge Cardiff store, as it was not displayed on the familiar No 7 stand. I eventually discovered it hanging on a hook on an additional No 7 display some twenty yards away, which also contained other No 7 products such as eyelash curlers. Unlike my previous sharpener, which was only suitable for your average sized slim eye pencil, the modernised version offers dual sharpening abilities, so that jumbo sized pencils can also be sharpened.
The design is far superior to the previous model, as the black glossy plastic is considerably sturdy and can withstand knocks from other products contained within my make-up bag. The sharpener is fairly large in size with its measurements of 3 cm in depth, 3½ cm in width and approximately 2½ cm in height. As it is provided in a storage case, which has been manufactured from the same plastic, its overall size is a little larger than the dimensions provided above. However, it perfectly fits into my make up bag.
The updated design is definitely an improvement on the older version, as the collection area would frequently unscrew itself and as a result, was messy to use, as the pencil shavings would disperse into my make up bag. The storage case clips firmly on both the upper and lower sections, so the two sharpening openings are permanently revealed. The lidded section offers a considerably robust hinge and needs to be opened when the sharpener requires emptying and despite the sharpener being repeatedly used, it shows no signs of wear and tear.
Using the sharpener is extremely easy, as it is necessary to turn the pencil only a few times to obtain an almost perfect point although I will gently dab it against the back of my hand to slightly blunt the pencil. The blades fully remove any wood shavings so there is no risk of any tiny particles dispersing into my eyes during application. Whilst the storage case has been designed to collect pencil shavings, I find that very few settle underneath the blades with the majority collecting on the upper section. There is sufficient room for a couple of week's worth of shavings although I tend to empty it after each use.
It is evident that Boots have carefully considered the design of such a small item, as located on the lower side is a small transparent ball of plastic, which is the cleaning device. It is easily removed with a gentle pull to reveal a narrow plastic pin, which enables me to keep the blades free of any debris.
I am extremely happy with my purchase and whilst the sharpener will set you back £4.95 I feel this represents excellent value for money, as it allows me to achieve maximum usage from my eye pencils. At the time of writing, Boots No 7 products are available on a "buy one, get one half price" promotion, which is generally the time that I stock up on my favourite items.
Due to the reasons discussed above, this product receives 5 stars from me together with my recommendation.
