My Soap and Glory Shower puff thing has in all honesty seen better days, it's a shame because I really like it but on the other hand I havent replaced it because I have a bathroom cupboard full of sponges, flannels and so one which have all come with gift-sets or have been purchased as part of an offer. So in my wisdom of not buying anything from Lush for Lent (yeah right) I decided to see exactly what was in the bathroom cupboard under the sink.
Calypso I thought was a drink I used to have at school or a fruit drink my mum would freeze and we would use as ice-pops when it was really sunny. Turns out they also part of the Spontex brand who sell kitchen products such as scouring pads and dishwashers.
Anyway the product I found lurking in a box is called a Calypso Natural Scrub Body Sponge and it was sealed inside a plastic wrapper which was see through in the middle allowing you to see the sponge and decorated with a leaf like pattern everywhere else with the Calypso Logo clearly displayed alongside further information telling you that it is a 'natural scrub', 'Exfoliant with corn grains' and 'Hypoallergenic' all the types of information you need to know right there on the front of the packet.
Inside the packaging you can clearly see a sponge which is a beige colour and it is slightly curved at each end, which I suppose makes it a little more interesting. Then on one side the sponge itself is quite rough and this is the corn grain surface and it acts as an exfoliant who primary job is to remove dead skin cells. Turning the sponge over, you will find that the other side is made of natural cellulose fibres which are used to gently clean the skin.
When it comes to using this product either in the shower or in the bath, you notice that the corn grain side is quite rough to the touch as you rub it along your palm so depending on how much exfoliating you need to do depends on how vigorous you need to press this side of the sponge onto your skin. As the opposite side is like any other sponge you might have used in design and texture it does when used as a sponge make lather really well and when you apply to your body whether it be your arms, legs or wherever it does a really good job at covering. The instructions for using this product, yes there are some, are as follows:
Wet the sponge and apply shower cream, gel or product to create some lather and apply to your body. The turn the sponge over to the corn grain side and massage across your body in circular motions to exfoliate your skin. Then once you have completed this step again wet the sponge to remove any dead pieces of skin and using the sponge side wipe across your body to remove any skin left on the surface and repeat where necessary.
So once you have completed the actions above once or twice your should be able to feel the corn grains working on your skin. As mentioned, if you have some really tough dry skin in need of removing, then you might find you need to apply a little more pressure to ensure the corn grains remove the skin but be careful on how much pressure you add because you don't want to scratch your skin in the process.
After I had used this for the first time when I was surprised at how soft my skin was, especially given how rough the corn grains feel against your skin. My skin was soft and smooth to the touch and in some areas it was slightly pink, especially on my shins which is one of my problem areas, but to combat the pinkness I covered myself in an Aloe Vera cream after drying myself.
Having used more products like this than I can count, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to use, easy to grip and how effective it was at removing dry skin. The corn grains themselves are really coarse which makes them so effective them using, but this sponge is designed for everyday use, so you don't have to use the corn grain side everyday unless you feel it is really necessary. Given it is designed for everyday use I would guess depending on how often you use the corn grains will depend on how long it will last, I have had mine for just over a month and it is still as usable now as it was when I first started to use it, I was advised to change it as soon as the corn grains because blunt to ensure I get the maximum effects from it as I can.
This is a brilliant product and it can be found in places like Tesco, John Lewis, on Amazon and in Waitrose to name but a few. It is also Hypoallergenic which means it can be used by all people with various skin types and allergies. I myself have really senstive skin and have had no allergic reactions to using this product. Its retail price does differ depending on where you purchase it from and prices usually start at around £4.50 and can rise to £9.99 however I noticed today it was on offer in Waitrose for £2.96 and I bought two more to keep in stock for when this one runs out and becomes useless.
