Advantages: Gives you smooth, callus free feet with a minimum of effort and mess

Disadvantages: Prices vary wildly, not quite as tidy as the adverts suggest

As a stereotypical man, I'm really not into clothes shopping and I have a terrible habit of wearing things 'til they're virtually falling to pieces (shoes included). As a result I get fairly bad rough skin around my heels and a recent verruca (ow!) hasn't helped. After sorting this out I decided to try and improve the general condition of my heels and I went through about 3-4 different softening creams, emery boards and pumice stone style products (although for some reason it seems very hard to find a 'real' pumice stone these days?

*Enter Ped Egg*

JML really do corner the market in 'why didn't I think of that?' gadgetry and the Ped Egg is no exception. Like anyone who enjoyed picking their scabs as a child, the concept of a foot grater is fantastically appealing! The commercial for the product is fairly convincing, although I don't have at my feet with quite the sadomasochistic joy of the demonstrator..

*Shop around - it's a grater, not a gouge...er!*

The Ped Egg is sold in various stores (Boots, Superdrug etc.) and it usually seems to be at around the £10 mark. This is incredibly expensive vs the prices online and I bought mine (I believe it's the same product, but licensed for North America) for roughly £3.50 including postage from eBay.

*Grate Scot(t)!*

After taking the Ped Egg from its packaging, it was very simple to use. The parts of the product neatly pop together and you're left with a rounded half egg to hold, with a neatly perforated metal plate on the bottom. This plate is punched so as to provide a series of slightly angled 'blades', which smooth the skin of your feet and remove dead skin as you rub them back and forth over the soles.

The product also comes complete with a couple of adhesive emery board style finishes, which can be used to further improve the tone of your soles. I'll stick with just not having calluses for the moment, thanks.

*General comments and observations*

I'm very pleased with my Ped Egg. It's a very simple idea that works incredibly well and will leave you feeling as if you have got great value for money. I've honestly never used anything more effective.

The product is simple to set up, use and clean, although it's not nearly as good at trapping the small skin flakes removed as it claims to be. Some will still escape, but I suppose that entropy has all of us losing skin all the time without noticing it anyway?

*Be patient*

The Ped Egg is quite gentle on the feet, but due to the nature of the product it can cause some reddening if you rub too hard (ooh er!) Only use it on rough skin, don't use it on cracked skin and generally relax - slow and steady wins the race to have smooth heels! I personally try not to use it more than once a fortnight, as a good grate can prove oddly cathartic.

Summary: The best foot care product since toenail clippers?

This sounds good, but I'll stick to my Body Shop emery boards for feet thing that I have :)

This gadget is also very good at grating cheese as well, nice and even pieces!
