Advantages: Balm helps to protect nose from irritation, menthol acts as a decongestant, good quality tissues
Disadvantages: Menthol aroma deteriorates quickly once the box is opened
We're only midway through February and I'm already suffering my second cold of this year! Back in January, just after returning to work following the Christmas break, I came down with a really heavy cold. Feeling pretty rubbish with a nose redder than Rudolph, I nipped down to Sainsburys in my lunch break and came back with a twin pack of these Kleenex Balsam 'Fresh' tissues.
In all honesty, I bought this particular variety of Kleenex Fresh tissue entirely by accident. I'd rushed down the aisle and saw twin packs on offer so just picked them up, thinking they were the usual Kleenex Balsam brand. To be fair, the colouring on this box is slightly different but not striking enough to really stand out from the usual offering. The main difference between these and the standard Balsam tissues is the addition of menthol - a product which is often used as a decongestant.
I have learnt the hard way that it is a false economy buying cheaper brands of tissue, as I have a tendency towards dry, sensitive skin and find that cheap tissues can make the area around my nose dry and sore with repeated use. I prefer to pay a little extra for premium branded Balsam coated tissues from Kleenex, as they are so soft and gentle against my skin and the addition of a layer of calendula balm helps to protect my nose from irritation, no matter how frequently I need to blow my nose.
When I first tried this relatively new Fresh version, with the added menthol, I didn't actually realise they were any different. My cold was so heavy at the time and my nose was totally blocked and I couldn't detect any aroma whatsoever. By the following day, as my cold was starting to loosen a little, the scent of menthol was unmistakable. It is a distinctive scent that I associate mostly with Vicks Vaporub, so automatically associate it with feeling poorly and the actions of being soothed back to full health! It is quite a strong scent and I could imagine that not everybody would find it a pleasant smell but it does seem to ease my nasal passage a little, which can only be a good thing.
The quality of the tissues themselves is in keep with the quality I associate with the Kleenex brand name. The tissues are very thick and strong and robust enough to be folded between blows, without falling apart or tearing. I find the size of the tissues to be generous enough for everyday use and can't fault the quality at all. The packaging is sturdy too and the opening large enough to make dispensing the tissues trouble-free.
The only minor disappointment that I've experienced with this particular version only became apparent when using these over the past few days. I'm still using the same boxes opened a few weeks ago and have noticed that the menthol fragrance is much less noticeable that it was when the boxes were first opened. Sadly, there is no means of resealing the boxes once opened so the scent is likely to deteriorate when exposed to the air, somewhat defeating the object of buying this particular variety.
I purchased these on a half-price offer and have found the twin pack format useful, as I have a box to hand at home and one sitting on my desk. I would consider repurchasing this particular variety but, due to the gradual decline in the menthol strength, I may well buy the resealable pocket packs instead. Ultimately, value for money will play a part in my next purchase - I would be unlikely to buy either variety if they are considerably more expensive than the standard Balsam offering at the time of purchase, as I'm not convinced the menthol is effective enough to justify too much added expense. I would also be reluctant to pay much in the way of a premium for the convenience of the small pocket packs either.
I do like these tissues and have far too much personal experience of using them over the past couple of months. They are currently available from Asda for £2.78 for a pack of 72 wipes (or two boxes for £3) compared to £2.48 for the standard Balsam tissues, although the offer price remains the same for both varieties. By contrast, the pocket packs cost £1 for nine mini-packs of six tissues (which surprisingly works out cheaper per tissue.)
These prices don't seem unreasonable for a good quality, soothing tissue with the added benefit of menthol so I'm happy to recommend them and, unfortunately, am pretty likely to need to buy more in the near future.
Summary: An excellent quality tissue with the additional of balm and menthol
