=== The product ===
Toner tabs from Lush designed for the face but can also be used in steaming hot water to fragrance a room or in a facial sauna which is how I have used mine before.
=== The packaging ===
Mine came packaged loose with some other items I purchased from the Lush website. I actually received three of these as a free sample initially and have since purchased several on more than one occasion.
=== Where can I buy these & for how much? ===
These can be purchased in Lush stores, from the Lush website or by telephone mail order. Each tab is 5g and costs just 99p.
=== Overall opinion ===
Firstly these tabs look brilliant. While they are all containing the same ingredients there are six different shapes on the top of them so they create a unique look when lain in a dish in my bathroom. This is a cute little quirkiness that I like and not knowing which pattern I will get next is something cute that I look forward to finding out when I open my next Lush delivery. Each tab is small, circular and green in colour.
The recommend use for one of these is as part of a cleanse, tone and moisturise skin regime and I have used these for that purpose a few times. Another way that I have used these is to cut or break them up in a bag and then use a little in a facial sauna that I use quite regularly. When using this tab I can smell lots of wonderful citrus scents. I really do feel like I am getting the full benefit of my facial sauna when using these as my pores are opened up and all the wonderful steam goes on to my face and leaves it feeling soft, smooth and refreshed. My bathroom is also left smelling lovely after using this and the smell lingers for a number of hours.
I will continue to purchase these toner tabs as I really do feel like they work wonders for my skin. My face feels smooth for days after using one of these and it helps to calm down some of the redness and spots that I seem to be suffering from a lot this year. The price of these is very reasonable, particularly as I can make a tab last a few days when used in my facial sauna, and these are often sent to me as free samples when I order other Lush products, possibly because of their low retail value? I'm happy enough to receive some of these free, regardless of the price, and I have used these on and off for months now. They are a fantastic way to treat my skin to some pampering without breaking the budget.
Lush is the type of store that you will smell before you see and it is like a candy store for grown ups with gorgeous aromas enveloping you as soon as you enter the store and a rainbow of colours will greet your eyes. Their creations contain natural ingredients and each product serves a very precise and sometimes unusual purpose and their names are just as well thought out as the products itself.
What does it do?
A Token To The Forest Gods is a perfect example of what Lush do best. Not only does it have an attention grabbing name but it serves a purpose that is not commonly encountered in beauty stores. The product is designed to tone the skin using a sauna effect and the tablet uses steam and aromas to tighten the pores. Tightened pores means that you will have a reduction in excess oils being produced, less spots and blackheads developing while your skin will feel smooth and fresh and look more youthful.
How do you use it?
When using this product, it took me straight back to the way that my mother used to treat a blocked nose when I was a child. You need to get a bowl and fill it with very hot water. Put the bowl on a table and drop one tablet inside. The ingredients in the tablet fizz and dissolve into the water and begin to evaporate within the steam.
You need to sit with your head over the bowl so that the steam hits your face. I put a towel over both my head and the bowl so that none of the steam gets lost into the air around me. You'll need to make sure your eyes are closed and that the water is not boiling so that you don't hurt yourself. You can stay like that for five minutes or until the water has stopped steaming. I then splash my face with cold water to tighten my pores further.
Make sure that you don't use too much water because you want the fumes to be as strong as possible. Once you've finished with the 'sauna', then you can pour the water into a bottle and use it as a toner that can be applied with a cotton pad. Two for the price of one!
How does it work?
Each tablet is full of Citric Acids which is a substance that comes from citrus fruits. The acids remove toxins from the skin and kills bacteria which means that spots can't form and your skin will appear clearer.
Grapefruit Oil is included in order to tighten the skin and reduce the size of the pores, meaning that less oil will be released onto the face and fewer blackheads will form. Sweet Orange and Wild Orange Oil is included for the same purpose and in addition it nourishes the skin with vitamins. Neroli oil also acts as an astringent while brightening the skin too.
Appearance and price
The product looks really cute and the appearance reminds me of that of a Peppermint Cream. They are pale green in colour and round in shape and each one has a picture of something natural moulded on to the top such as stars and leaves.
The product is fairly cheap and it only costs around 99p for each one or you can buy a pack of six for around £5. That's not bad when you think that once it's been used, it can be bottled and used as a liquid toner. It can be bought from your local Lush store or from its online website.
This is a fantastic little product that is a real treat for the skin if used properly. If the water is too hot or too cold or you use too much water then it can all go wrong.
When you put the tablet into the water, it starts fizzing and I put my face over the bowl straight away. The product has quite a strong smell if you haven't used too much water and it is a sharp, sweet and refreshing smell.
I find it quite an invigorating aroma so this is a good one to get you properly awake in the morning. It's not difficult to breathe with your face above the steam but it can get a little uncomfortable under that towel but no more than the feeling of being in an actual sauna. You can't really feel anything happening at the time, other than getting a bit hot and bothered.
Once my skin has been dried, I wouldn't say that I feel transformed or notice incredibly results and immediately after use my skin does look patchy and red. This is from the hot water though and not the product as that can happen in the shower too if the water's too hot. Once that has subsided though my skin does feel smooth and soft and I feel refreshed in myself.
I don't see a difference in the size of my pores but my skin feels tighter in a good way, after use. It isn't as intense as using a toner straight on the skin and I would say it was a gentler and more fun way to tighten the skin.
Although 99p is cheap, if you were to use this daily, that soon becomes almost £7 per week so I use it as a treat rather than as part of my beauty regime. If you find yourself falling madly in love with the product and want to try some more, then also available as part of the Toner Tab collection is the Tea Tree Toner Tab (Bit of a tongue twister!), the Vit C Toner Tab and the Vit E Toner Tab.
I don't think this product would blow anyone away with its results but it really is a treat to use and does make your skin smooth. It would make a lovely present for someone or just to spend a bit of time pampering yourself. It left my skin feeling refreshed and looking healthier after I've used it but I think I'll stick to my normal toner for daily use.
Sodium Bicarbonate, Citric Acid, Perfume, *Limonene, Grapefruit Oil (Citrus paradisi), Sweet Orange Oil (Citrus sinensis), Sweet Wild Orange Oil (Citrus sinensis), Neroli Oil (Citrus Aurantium amara), Gardenia Extract (Gardenia jasminoides), *Citral, *Linalool, Colour 61570
I was a little reluctant to buy Lush's sauna or toner tabs when they first came out as they look like the will require too much time and faff to use, but I decided to try this one anyway.
A normal facial toner tab costs 75p but Token to the Gods costs 95p each or £5.50 for a pack of 6. I haven't seen these anyway else other than from Lush so it's quite a unique treat. Each tab is about the size of a 50p coin but quite a bit thicker. It is a dull green in colour and normally has a fresh citrus smell to it. However, I did buy one in the All-Inclusive box set and when I got round to using it the scent had completely gone!
To use you either drop into the bowl in your sauna, but if like me your not that posh to own one, drop into a bowl of steamy hot water, put your face over the top and cover your head with a towel. Leave for 10 mins so the steam works its way into your skin. Then pat dry.
Alternatively do this, then use a Lush face mask, then use the water on your skin post face mask.
I have used it both ways and was a little disappointed. I don't know if the scent had disappeared in the all-inclusive box but I got no nice scent at all, I find I couldn't use it daily as I can't really spare the time and I really didn't feel the benefits.
Each individual tab contains Grapefruit Oil which is a good source of vitamin C, it smells refreshing and can uplift your mood, Sweet Orange Oil also uplifts your mood and has a great scent, Sweet Wild Orange Oil helps boost your immunity and smells citrus like, Neroli Oil is the only oil scientifically proven to increase serotonin production in the brain and Gardenia extract can treat irritability and inflamation.
I don't know if this was because luckily thanks to good genes and good Lush products I have good skin, or whether the product wasn't that impressive. Either way, I sadly won't be using again.
I bought one of these toner tabs when they were newly released as part of Lush's new range of items for 2010. You can buy the tabs individually, which costs 95p for one 10g tab, or you can buy them in a multi-pack, which costs £5.50 for six tabs with a combined weight totalling 35g.
Lush say these are "Fizzing citrus tabs for saunas or steaming. Our tokens to the forest deities are green, fizzing toner tabs with uplifting grapefruit, sweet orange and neroli oils. Drop into a bowl of hot water and enjoy the sharp, citrusy blast of oils. Your face will be toned, refreshed and a little closer to the divine."
The tablets are small green coloured discs with little leaf patterns decorating the top. These are a very unique product that I have not come across anywhere else, so it's important to understand how to use them properly. The basic idea is that you fill a bowl with boiling water, drop one of these toner tabs into the water, and then let it fizz away. The toner tab will dissolve into the water and the essential oils will be released with the steam.
Take the bowl and sit down somewhere comfortable, you can place the bowl on your lap or on a table in front of you. Lean your head down towards the bowl and then cover your head and the bowl with a towel to trap the steam inside this small area. You then stay like this for a short while, maybe 10-15 minutes, and all the while breathe in the steam and allow it to cover your face and neck.
A good way of gauging how long you need to do this for is to have some music playing in the background, and listen to roughly three songs, which should last about 10 minutes if they are of average length. While you are hidden underneath your towel the steam is working to open your pores and hydrate your skin. The toner tab contains essential oils and these will act to purify and tighten your skin.
This particular toner tab contains orange and grapefruit oils so should have a nice cirtusy scent and be uplifting to your mood. I found the smell of this is faintly herbal when the tab is still dry, it has a gentle fresh scent and is fairly subtle. The smell disappeared when I dissolved the tab in water, and the scent fizzled away so I couldn't smell anything at all.
After I finished using this toner tab my skin felt very hot and sticky to the touch. I did feel very fresh and clean though, and I believe it helped to tighten up my pores as I have not had an outbreak of spots since (keeping my fingers crossed!). Toning is a necessary step between cleansing and moisturising, but I use these toner tabs as an extra special treat for my skin when I want to do a bit of pampering. I usually cleanse as normal, then steam with a toner tab as described above to open my pores, then apply a face mask, clean that off, use a liquid toner solution to get rid of any traces of the mask, then finish with a moisturising lotion. It's a lengthy process but it gives your skin a real treat and using the toner tab before applying the face mask allows you to get a really good deep down clean.
This toner tab worked well on my skin but it did leave me feeling a bit sticky and I couldn't smell it at all when it was working in the steam. A good toner tab but I will probably stick with using the ETC ETC toner tab pack as I like the variety and they have a slightly more noticeable effect on my skin.
Other useful tips for this product:
- If you allow the hot water to cool down you can bottle up some of the water and use this as a toning fluid. Keep it in the fridge and it will stay fresh enough to use for a few days. This is a very light and gentle effect and is great for sensitive skin.
- Alternatively, you could dissolve in a bowl of hot water and use as a foot soak.

Lush Sauna Tab.....
A recent shopping trip to Lush resulted, as it always does, in a rather hefty shopping bag. However my purchased did include one of the cheapest items I have ever bought at Lush and it was this Sauna Tab - A Token To The Forest Gods .
For a mere 95 pence, what you get is a small disc like chalky product that has an all natural green colouring to it. On the top of the Sauna Tab there is a embossed type star shape but there are other designs for the same tab including a leaf, a rain drop and a tree, to name but a few. The designs make no difference to the product as they are all for the same thing.
The directions for use are simple, all you need do it drop the tab into a bowl or sink full of hot water and watch the fizzing commence. I used the tab with very hot water and placed a towel over my head to enjoy the product at its best. It worked well at fizzing down to nothing but turning the water a murky green tinged colour.
The idea of the product is that it is meant to refresh and tone your skin whilst giving you a slight pick me in up terms of scents and aromas. The smells that come from using this tab are, as all of Lush's products, very nose tingling. There are blasts of citrus flavours which include grapefruit and orange and the oils that are contained in the product seem to work well at penetrating the skins surface and make for a very refreshing time.
Not only was the product cheap and simple to use, I found it made my skin feel wonderfully refreshed and revitalised. The aromas filled my bathroom and the scents were most definitely to my liking. My pores opened well and the Sauna tab gave a deep cleaning feel to my skin.
The good thing about Lush is that they do use all natural products so you know you are getting a top quality product and with this Sauna Tab you can certainly feel this too.
All in all I felt that this product was very good and £1 well spent. I will definitely be buying the Sauna Tab again on my next visit to a store or I may even place an online order! I would highly recommend treating yourself to this as it is affordable and feels like a little bit of luxury.
A five star product yet again from Lush and a high recommendation.
Many thanks for taking the time to read.
I do hope that this has been of some help/interest to you.
A Token to the Forest Gods is Lush's latest toner tab. Toner tabs are unique to Lush (as far as I know) and are like mini ballistics designed to steam your face and give you a mini facial. Most of the toner tabs are priced at 75p, but this new one is 95p. It's still pretty cheap if you just use it for the occasional facial, rather than an everyday toning solution.
I got my toner tab in the 'All-Inclusive Package' currently stocked in Lush stores. A Token to the Forest Gods is pale green in colour, unlike the other toner tabs which are varying shades of white. Each tab has a different picture on - mine had what looked like a raindrop or a tear. The tab contains sodium bicarbonate to make it fizz up. It also contains grapefruit oil, sweet orange oil and neroli oil, which apparently tone and refresh the skin.
I filled a large bowl with hot water - normally just-boiled water is recommended but the hot water tap in my room provides water that is so hot it can be scalding! I then dropped my toner tab into the water. It fizzed around the same way as a bath ballistic does, turning the water a very pale green colour.
Before dropping the toner tab into the water, it smelled very faintly citrusy. However, once it had dissolved I found it didn't smell of anything at all, although I felt that sharpness at the back of my nose that citrus scents often produce. I covered my head with a towel and held my face over the steaming bowl, the way you do when you have a cold and you're trying to use steam to help you breathe!
I stayed under for about fifteen minutes all told, popping my head out every now and again to get a breath of cold air. Afterwards I let my face dry out naturally.
I thought my skin looked and felt really refreshed, it seemed brighter and more even-toned. My skin felt moisturised and I thought I could probably get away without using moisturiser, but I applied a little anyway just in case.
The next day, I still thought my skin looked even-toned and glowing, and I noticed that the pores on my nose looked less prominent and I appeared to have fewer blackheads. I was very impressed by this as the skin on my nose is the bane of my life. My skin was also softer to the touch, and smoother.
All things considered, I think this is an excellent addition to the toner tab range. It's no better than the others Lush stock to be quite honest, but neither is it any worse. I'll certainly continue to buy it alongside the others from time to time. It's a shame it's more expensive than the others but it's still a pretty cheap facial!
If you have a spray bottle it's possible to bottle up the toner water, keep it in the fridge and use it for up to three days. Therefore, it would be ideal to take on holiday for a short break as you won't have to worry about liquid allowances in your suitcase. It would also be ideal to use before a face mask, as it cleanses your skin and opens up the pores ready for the mask to get down to work.
To sum up - recommended.
