Everyone knows that since 2006 there are limitations on the amount of liquids that you can bring onto flights. Liquids are limited to 100ml if carried in your hand luggage and have to be placed in a clear re-sealable plastic bag.
I bought the travel bottle set from Marks and Spencer's before going on a weekend trip to Venice with my boyfriend. When we booked the flights it worked out an extra £40.00 between us if we wanted to take more than 15kg of luggage as it would need to be checked in to the holding area. Eager to miss out on the experience of waiting for luggage at the carousel and not wanting to pay the £40.00, we decided to just take hand luggage. 15kg each isn't too bad for a long weekend. Well aware of the restrictions of bringing liquids aboard I decided to go shopping for some miniature toiletries that fitted under the 100ml limit. I was horrified at the prices! They were nearly as expensive as the full sized versions! I could not stomach to pay this amount of money for a piddley amount of shampoo so I decided to look for some travel bottles that I could just fill up with the supply from home. Voila, this M&S set did the business and I paid £7.50. I thought it may be a lot for plastic bottles but I could re use them year after year and were a lot cheaper than buying miniature products!
I was really pleased with the set when I brought it home until I opened it and realised how appalling the zip was. It is extremely low quality and sticks at every given opportunity; a complete battle every time you open or close it! Nevertheless I persevered and stocked up my little bottles with items from the bathroom. The 100ml bottles are perfect for shampoo, body wash and conditioner and they seal tightly so there is no worry of leakage. The funnels make it easy to transfer liquids to travel bottles without any mess. The 18ml jars are great for face cream and I squirted toothpaste into one of them as it seals tight and found it just as easy to dip my toothbrush into the pot. The spatula was helpful in transferring the cream into the pot. The spray pumps are okay and can be swapped onto the tops of the 1200ml bottles transferring it to a pump action bottle; I used one for a leave in conditioner but couldn't find a use for the other one. I would have preferred another 100ml sealed bottle to be honest and the pump is not fantastic. The set comes with a body scrub which is useful and a cheap awful hand mirror. I didn't really need these but since they were there, I took them along.
Rolling up to airport security at Manchester Airport I was told that the plastic carrying case supplied with this set was too big as it has to be 20cm x 20cm and this is a little bigger. The security guard also told me I had too many things in it and to store the body scrub in my hand luggage! I had to go buy a little sandwich sealable bag from a vending machine for £1.00! I got two bags for this price but still find it extortionate! I was very cross that I had bought this set and couldn't use it as a whole. Marks and Spencer's clearly stated on the label that this bag was "ideal for airport security." On my return to the U.K I visited my local M&S and explained my issues and they issued a full refund and I still got to keep the product! Their level of customer service was fantastic and seemed generally concerned about my experience.
I wouldn't recommend this product; I've recently discovered that the travel bottles can be bought separately from Superdrug at about 60p each! You can mix and match and get as many as you want. Sorry M&S but you let me down this time!
One of my Christmas gifts this year from my very thoughtful dad was this travel bottle set from M&S. I travel a lot and have been cursed by lost luggage fairly frequently, so as a result end up trying to take a couple of changes of clothes, and toiletries, in my hand luggage. What with the rules regarding liquids now, this isn't always easy.
This was a really welcome gift because it enables me to take smaller, airline-approved amounts of my favourite toiletries on board, so no wasting money on travel sizes.
Mine doesn't look quite the same as the one shown in the picture, mine is even better because it's ORANGE (which I love if you hadn't guessed), both the binding and the see-through plastic. I'm not sure which other colours are available as I didn't buy it, the website only seems to show the clear and pink version, with no option to choose different.
The case is rounded at the top and has a flat base so that it can be stood up on a counter, or hung up by the loop provided. It zips open down the middle and the bottles are stored in the two halves, a kind of clam shell design. There isn't room in the middle of these two sections to store anything. Not a big deal for me all I need fits into the bottles and jars, and I can take out extras to free up more room in the pockets.
Despite being made of PVC it doesn't look at all cheap or tacky, but is clearly practically indestructible and has a good strong zip and press studs to hold the pockets shut. It measures about 7in square and 4 inches across at the widest point (the base), so shouldn't take up too much room in any carry-on bag.
You can decant your smellies into the three 100ml bottles and two 18ml jars using the spatulas and funnel provided. All have very secure lids and are air-tight. I can't see them leaking, they are after all made for travel, but if they did the bag is easy to wipe clean.
Aside from the bottles and jars, there is also a good double-sized hand mirror and a little orange bath scrunchie. Finally the kit provides waterproof labels so you don't forget what you've brought with you, enough so you can change them as you use the bottles for different things.
The bottles and jars are big enough I feel to bring enough toiletries for a week's holiday. The jars are pretty small, but as I use moisturisers which require very little each use, should hold enough. The pump attachments fasten on securely and have good lids (almost a little TOO hard to remove), but I kind of wish there had been a spray attachment as well instead of two pumps.
Overall a very functional, hassle-free product. Decanting toiletries should be easy with the funnels and spatulas (although can't help feeling the funnels might be a bit narrow for thicker creams) and once you hit the airport you don't need to take everything back out into a plastic bag as it's see-through. Perfect if like me you get easily stressed when travelling no matter how often you do it!
This set sells in store at Marks and Spencer or online for £7.50. If you don't fancy spending quite so much, I did see a set in Primark for just £1 the other day, although it was a lot more basic with just three plain bottles (no pumps). M&S also offer two smaller options at £5 each, one which has 3x bottles without pumps and 2x tubs in bag, and one with 3x bottles with pumps in a bag.
Set contains: 3 x 100ml bottles, 2 x 18ml jars, 2 pumps, 2 funnels, 2 spatulas, 1 mirror and 1 body mop
