The MAC #219 pencil brush, so called because of it's short, tapered / pointy tip (almost as if it has been sharpened) was one of the first makeup brushes I purchased. After reading a few reviews and hearing how great it was from other users I decided to try it out and see if it really was worth the hype.
This bristles are cruelty free white goat hair (like a lot of MAC's brushes) which are densely bundled into a small cone shape. The tip is tapered to pick up lots of product. The bristles are just under 10mm high at the tip and 5mm wide. It retails for £16.64 and can be purchased from any type of MAC store / counter unlike some which are only available from the Pro or freestanding stores (Boo).
~ The main way I use the #219 is for smudging liners around my lashlines. By simply drawing a quick line of eyeliner around both uppers and lowers, then taking this brush and smudging upwards you are left with a look that is effortless, yet effective. You can add a matching shadow on top if you like to 'set' the liner and improve it's wear using the same brush. Love, love, love doing this! Only takes about 2 minutes :-)
~ It is also very easy to apply pigments or shadows to the lower lashline using this brush. Simply dip the tip into the product and gently drag along below the lower lashes. The slim, tapered pointes make for neat application without too depositing any in your lashes which can get messy.
~ Lining the upper lashline with a quick stroke of colour can also be achieved using the #219 pencil. Again, just drag it along or gently press into the lashes from above. Perfect when used with a black / dark shadow for smoking up an everyday look.
~ Also effective for densely shading the crease or socket line with colour. The small tip means that a lot of product will be deposited into the crease and unless you are going for a mod / Twiggy type look you may need to then take a blending brush and diffuse any harsh lines left. Gives a really professional, sculpted effect that is rarely gained with other brushes.
~ Highlighting the tearduct! This brush is a godsend if you like to apply a pop of colour to the inner corner / tearduct to wake up and brighten the eye. Just tap it gently into the area to avoid irritation.
~ And finally, in a pinch that brush can be used for spot concealing. By simply dabbing the end into concealer and again onto the tip of the pimple you can conceal even the largest of spots quickly. Blend from the tip downwards and around using the edge of the bristles to conceal any surrounding redness.
This brush definately lived up to it's claims. SO many uses and very easy to use, I would definately recommend it to anyone whos looking for a multi-use brush. Not really much use if used alone as it would take forever to shade an entire lid using it, but when in conjuntion with another brush, it's amazing.
Definately try it out if you like your makeup to look detailed and neat :-)
