OPI Silver Shatter
Advantages: Creates a striking look, easy to apply & lasts for ages.
Disadvantages: Not the cheapest nail varnish available.
The Silver Shatter acts as a top coat in a sense and must be applied over an actual nail varnish to achieve the best effects. It comes in a clear glass bottle with a black lid, which shows the silver crackled effect on it quite nicely. The OPI logo is evident on the front of the bottle while the inside of the lid is home to the nail varnish brush. The brush is average in terms of size and ensures a really even spread of nail varnish on my nails.
So let's talk about how to use this nail varnish and apply it. Applying it directly onto your nails will result in a very bizarre finish that doesn't look good. I tend to start with a base coat, then cover this once dry with a nail varnish before adding on a second coat of nail varnish. After it's thoroughly dried, I tend to leave it a good fifteen minutes if I can; I apply a coat of the silver shatter on top. You need to put it on quite thickly to achieve the best results, spreading it too thinly will result in the shatter effect not looking quite as dramatic or impressive. Within seconds of applying it you'll notice the nail varnish almost shrinking on your nail, resulting in jagged areas of the under colour being revealed on your nails. This creates a "shattered" effect which is really striking. I'll then finish it with a top coat to add extra shine and smooth my nails out.
The OPI shatter collection can be used over any shade you wish, obviously some look better than others with the silver colour. The overall result is a stunning silver metallic crackle over the under colour which looks great. It must be applied onto dry nails to result in the best effects and it seems to work best with OPI colours, I used it on a No 7 nail varnish and it really didn't shatter in the same way creating a rather gloopy and lumpy effect. The effect normally lasts for about four to five days with me before slight chips start appearing, but I tend to only paint my nails every week unless I'm going out so it can easily last for a week without looking noticeably messy. OPI are certainly one of the best for long lasting nail colour and effects, believe me, I've tried a lot of others!
The only downside is that it is quite hard to get off with nail varnish remover. Due to the fact I end up with about four to five coats of nail varnish on, including this one, you do need to scrub extra hard at your nails to get the varnish completely off. My friend commented that she doesn't like it as it feels quite bumpy on her nails and she prefers them to be smooth, obviously as this nail varnish isn't covering all your nail evenly (as it shrinks together) it does feel ever so slightly uneven when I run my finger across my nails. However I can't say it bothers me in the slightest!
The OPI Silver Shatter Top Coat currently comes in a standard 15ml bottle and retails at various prices depending where you shop. Look Fantastic are retailing it at £10.50 at the moment whilst Beauty Cow offer it for £7.51 (despite the bizarre name for a beauty website)! Salons seem to sell it at around the £10.50 mark although I have seen it priced as expensively as £14 at certain places so it seems cheaper online. The OPI shatter range includes other colours including black, blue, gold, navy, red, turquoise and white. I've also got the black one which is quite a matte colour without a top coat but the others look like they need to be appearing on my bathroom shelves soon! So if you want a change from twentieth century plain coloured nails and fancy shattering into the twenty first century (a few years late granted) then grab some shatter!
Thanks for reading!
