“ Type: Powder Brush / Brand: Ruby & Millie / Make up applicator brush - loose powder / „
I bought the Ruby & Millie Powder Brush from Boots for £4.34 which was reduced from £17.36 - a massive saving of £13.02 (or 75 percent!). I was only actually looking for a cheap make-up brush and would never normally splash out on an expensive applicator, but a Ruby & Millie Powder Brush for such a cheap price was too good an opportunity to miss.
The brush does just look like a basic non-gadgety powder applicator and there really isn't anything about it that stands out. Its colours are neutral (grey and silver) but actually I like the fact that it looks quite simple and non-fussy because somehow this makes it more classy. The brush applicator is attached to the silver and black handle which has the Ruby & Millie tastefully lettered on the side of the grey part of the handle. The handle is long enough to get good grip on it, but it is also short enough for me to fit in my make-up bag - although its too big to fit into my touch-up makeup pouch that I carry around with me.
The brush itself is made up of fine bristles which are about 5cms in length and they kind of bunch together at the top and then splay out so that they are less dense at the proximal end compared to the base. The density of the bristles means that the powder is applied finely and over a larger and so its not suitable for precision application, but for general all over application - such as foundation, powder blusher and bronzer, its perfect. It results in the powder being applied finely and gives a really natural appearance.
The brush seems well made in terms of being robust. I haven't found that the bristles fall out and I've also found that the brush is easy enough to be "cleaned" by shaking the powder out of the brush. The handle is obviously wipeable - and by keeping it in the pouch that is supplied with it, I manage to keep the powder from the brush off of everything else!
I do think this is a good powder brush and at the inexpensive reduced price I can't really fault it.
When it comes to the Ruby & Millie make-up and brushes.... well I quite simply love them. I particularly own a lot of the brushes from the range that I bought individually from Boots over the past year or so and actually did invest in two huge kits of the make up and a kit of make-up brushes too in recent times. I've lost count of the amount of money I have spent on this range believe me and protect the lot with my life lol.
Being a qualified beauty therapist though I do believe in good tools of the trade. Its no good buying great make up without having clean and good quality tools to apply it all with and me, well I'd actually buy cheap make-up and apply it well than use expensive and put it on with tatty tools any day of the week!
So the other day whilst in Boots I found a reduced section of products and was pleased to see this brush make an appearance and was only sad that there was only one left to buy or I'd have bought alot more of them. At the price of £2.20 instead of about £17.00 for this brush I was equally more thrilled when I took it to the till and it went through at only £1.10...you probably heard me whoop for joy (much to my boyfriends dismay!). I was so delighted lol.
The brush comes in a see-through plastic to the front oblong hanging wallet type thing that has a press zipper style idea to the top of it so you can reuse it and store your brush in it if you want to. The back of the wallet is see-through, frosted white and there is a card with a womans face in black and white through the front of it and then the back of the card is black and white with plenty of information on it such as information about the brush and how to use it and contact details for Ruby & Millie are given. Its a nice reusable wallet this one and informative enough at the same time and of course the inlay is removable too making it a plain wallet!
A Bit About The Product According To The Information On The Card In The Wallet:
Ruby and Millie believe that good make up tools allow you better control and application, your make up will look better and last longer.
Ruby and Millie believe that the application of loose powder is the final touch to flawless make up and the professional way to apply that is with a big soft brush.
'Use face make up cleverly and only where you need it, it doesn't have to be applied like a mask' Ruby.
The Brush Itself:
The brush itself is really nice and plain to look at. Short, with a grey handle with Ruby & Millie in black lettering neatly up the side of it, this then has a bright silver casing that is rather long to the top of it to which lots of black, smooth hairs/bristles are rather securely attached to it. Its a rather stubby brush though not too short and all you do with this of course is to coat it in loose powder, tap the brush and away you go. The inlay card also says we can use this with bronzing powder to and me, well I find this such a good weight and so easy to control that I like using it for blusher, highlighter the lot as its easy to clean through with warm soapy water and to keep in shape and looking as good as new.
This is almost the perfect, one step tool for the face. I say almost cos if your read other reviews on here you will see none of us are best pleased with the bristles this has to it. Although smooth and theres plenty of them, the hairs do come out. Not too badly but they do which to me is a major negative having to keep stopping to rid my face of irritating bristles!
Other than that which isn't great, powders cling to this with ease, transfer easily onto the face and it does help to keep the face from going mask like. I like my brush and consider it a bargain however I wouldn't pay anywhere near its usual £17.00 price tag for it and would even stop and think about it at half that price as although this looks and feels good quality I can't ignore the fact that bristles do come out of it all too easily!
Available online and from Boots.
It's so great having friends who work in Boots, as when they buy and get given things on offer that they don't particularly want, they give them to you!
One such item was this Ruby & Millie Powder brush. I have tried few things from the Ruby & Millie range before. Even though I'm not too familiar with it however, I still like the range, only because we share a name!
I can't see myself buying this brush for full price, as it is, in my opinion, very expensively priced at £16.64. I know there are many more similar priced make up brushes out there, but still I just don't think this price can be justified. Especially when I wasn't too happy with the brush itself . . .
The brush is shown in the image provided. It has black bristles, a silver middle and a grey handle, which says on it 'RUBY & MILLIE'. In my opinion this is a very bland, basic design and not very interesting. It would never have caught my attention in store.
I found it quite hard to use this brush. I thought the bristles were too wide and spread out which meant I didn't have much control over where I was putting the powder. This meant the brush could not be used for blusher. For all over face powder though, it is not so bad. But it does make the powder particles get flicked everywhere though, and you need to wipe up and hoover the carpet after use!
Overall I would not recommend this brush as I thought it was far too expensive and doesnt' live up to the price. It is OK for putting on all over face powder but there are cheaper brushes out there you can use for this purpose.
Thanks for reading xo
When I decided to buy good set of brushes, powder brush was at the very bottom of my to-buy list. Partly because it was one of the most expensive Ruby & Millie brushes (£17 normally, I bought mine with a £5 off Boots voucher), partly because I thought that I could use any kind of brush to spread the powder evenly. How wrong I was!
This brush is relatively big - the 'wand' is thick (around 2 cm in diameter) and silvery, it looks extremely elegant and it is labelled 'Ruby & Millie face'. To be honest, I think that Ruby & Millie brushes look very elegant and quite luxurious yet they are still for affordable prices. The brush isn't very long - around 12 cm (which is not longer than other brushes) and the hairy 'head' at the end is around 3 cm long and even 4 cm in diameter.
I don't use loose powder - maybe because I am not very experienced in applying make up - and I find pressed foundation powder much easier to use. You just brush it, blow it (or shake the excess off the brush) and voila! you can apply it onto your face. I may be making it sound dead easy, but believe me - it is. This brush helps it to spread very evenly on your face. I must admit I had the problem of applying too much powder and I looked extremely pale and fake - with this brush, it is not a problem anymore.
The only problem that I have with this brush is that the hair at the end keeps on falling out. At first, I thought it was happening because it was new and it will stop. However, it hasn't. every time I apply powder, I find an odd hair or two somewhere on my neck. It doesn't seem like a big deal, but when I am in a rush in the morning it gets a bit annoying.
The brush is fairly soft and extremely pleasant to you. I guess that if I wasn't so ticklish, I would be using it on my face because it feels so soft.
Overall, it is a good brush for a reasonable price (especially with a voucher!).
