I don't buy boxes of tissues very often as my Husband uses hankies and the kids and I are happy to use kitchen or toilet roll for our runny nose needs but I do like to have a box of good quality tissues in the lounge for guests to use.
The current box of tissues is a box of Velvet Classic Tissues that my Husband put in the shopping basket last week in Morrisons. They were on offer at a 99p which is good value for this sort of product from a brand name.
My box of Velvet Classic Tissues is decorated in shades of pink, there was also boxes decorated in shades of purple. The box is quite attractive to look at and does not stand out in my lounge. The style of box would be suitable for the bedroom too.
On the box I am told that there are 80 three ply tissues within and each measures 200mm x 209mm and all together they would cover an area of 3.34m square. The tissues are made from paper from responsible sources as approved by the forest stewardship council. There are also contact details for SCA Hygiene who makes this product. The box is fully recyclable.
On the top of the box is a serrated oval that should be removed to access the tissues within. Once this is removed I am faced with a sheet of plastic covering the tissues. In the plastic is a little slit that the tissues can be pulled through. The tissues are easy to pull out and I never get more than one at a time.
The tissues are nice and soft and very absorbent. They feel soft on my nose, I have a bit of a runny nose at the moment which is why I am using these more than usual and they are much more comfortable to use than toilet tissue or kitchen roll. Each tissue is the right size for one good nose blow or for a few good sniffles. The tissues do not break up when damp which is great as there is nothing worse then the tissue falling into holes as you blow your nose.
All things considered Velvet Classic Tissues are very good. The box is attractive, the tissues are easily dispensed one at a time and stay in one piece and are very soft, gentle and absorbent.
I brought these when on offer at a pound in morrisons. When not on offer they retail at £1.94 a pack.
Thank you for reading.
When it comes to tissues I tend to buy the supermarket own brand ones most often. I find the very cheap value ranges are often too thin and the branded ones more than I usually want to pay, so own brand is fine by me. Unfortunately my husband is more fussy and insists on branded ones, which is why we ended up with these.
We actually bought these in Costco which is a wholesaler. I can't remember what we paid but we ended up with around twelve boxes and by buying in bulk we paid much less than the retail price. This kept us both happy as he got his branded tissues and we didn't spend a fortune! We bought the tissues around a year ago and many colds later we are down to around four boxes, so I've had lots of experience of these!
The tissues come in the standard cardboard box. The boxes have a pleasant swirly pattern and are available in shades of lilac, pink and blue. The colour of the box has no bearing on the colour of the tissues which are all white inside.
One thing I like about the box is that when you remove the cardboard oval from the top there is a sort of plastic over the hole from which the tissues are dispensed. This makes it easier to pull out just one tissue at a time, so you don't end up pulling out three when you only wanted one!
The tissues themselves are 3-ply and plain white. Unlike some of the other expensive brands there are no fancy borders or patterns printed onto these. I'd say they are a standard size, the box says 200mmx210mm but I can't say I've ever measured them myself! The paper the tissues are made with is from responsible sources and for every tree they use they plant three more according to the box.
I find that the tissues feel very soft and they also feel strong and good quality. They don't fall apart or tear easily. When I have had heavy colds I find I use less of these tissues than the normal brands, which is probably because they are quite absorbent and less prone to disintegrating. Being so soft they don't seem to irritate my nose as much as cheaper brands, so I am not left with any redness or soreness. In terms of quality and functionality (if that's the right word in this case!) I am very pleased with them and they do the job well.
The only other use I have had for these is in a cosmetic sense. For blotting lipstick they are ideal as they aren't 'dusty' and being strong they won't leave bits of tissue behind. I have also used them for wiping smudged mascara from beneath my eyes and again they are effective, probably just owing to them being strong.
The price for a box of these tissues (and there are approximately 80 tissues per box) is around £1.99 in most of the main supermarkets (ASDA are the cheapest at £1.94). In total honesty, being a cheapskate that is still a little more than I would like to pay, but being strong and good quality a box does last well.
Overall I am very pleased with these tissues. There's not a lot you can say about tissues really, but these ones I find to be strong, soft and good quality and I would happily recommend them.
I don't use a lot of tissues but I always like to have a box in both my bedroom and the living room, generally if I didn't have any that would be the time I was in dire need so I find it useful to keep those two boxes there just in case. When I finished using my last box (after months of use) I was browsing my local Asda for whichever were on offer and came across these Velvet tissues for just £1 and thought they were worth a try. I have since purchased a further box on offer as they are lovely.
As I say I bought my box from Asda but I have also seen them in Sainsbury and Tesco so most leading supermarkets should stock them at a cost of £1.95, I personally think this is a bit steep but anything over £1 is a bit too expensive for me which is why I go for those boxes that are on offer at £1, when they are on offer I pick up a box as it doesn't come around often. In comparison to regular priced tissues these are around a similar price which is pretty acceptable I think.
The boxes I find are lovely and come in a variety of pastel colours, I have had the lavander one pictured and currently have the pale pink one as it fits in with my chocolate and pink colour scheme. The box is rather feminine looking rather than the block colours of the regular boxes this is pastel and has tiny butterflies dotted around it. The opening is the regular cardboard oval that has perforated edges allowing you to tear it off easily. Underneath is a thin plastic film with a slit in the middle allowing the tissues to be pulled from the box one at a time.
Once removed from the box the tissues are of regular size (210mm by 210mm) and 3 ply. There are around 80 in the box which is standard I think but they aren't so tightly packed that it's a struggle to remove them from the box. I find the tissues are exceptionally soft and thick that they feel soft against the skin leaving a runny nose clean but not irritated and sore as some can. They are very absorbent and don't become useless after just 1 use which is good when you have a cold and are going through tissues like nobodies business as it is. They effectively take care of the runny nose or watering eyes without breaking and disintegrating in your hands which is a further positive.
I also like the fact that Velvet construct these from recognised sources and for every one tree they use 3 more are planted. It makes me feel part of looking after the world. Overall I think these tissues are excellent and I am more than happy to buy them at £1 a box although I wouldn't be prepared to spend almost £2 per box not because of lack of quality more because there is no need when you can get a perfectly good box at £1, however if these are on offer I always pick up a box to keep in stock.
@ The box, Absorbing Ability @
The box for these tissues is made of solid cardboard and is smooth on the outside but rough on the inside. The box is quite strong and can withstand a few dings, although the corners become bent over time. You can depress and the box permanently by applying pressure to the corners. On top you have a very hand dispensing system which is covered by a plastic layer on both sides, although in my experience i have had multiple tissues come through at once and at times the tissues build up in the slot. The tissue slot is covered by a large card plate which to all intents and purposes, keeps the tissues fresh. Its more of a hygiene thing not wasteful packaging.
The tissues can absorb water and other liquids quite well but they are not like bounty where you can keep re using them. They absorb soft drinks spillages without tearing apart straight away but constant scrubbing on the floor over a large patch of liquid will cause them to rip and tear. They normally break apart into several small pieces rather than just tear into two. They are not tough and not designed for wiping stuff up but in an emergency, you can do.
@ Comfort @
These tissues are quite soft but rubbing them up against tour nose all day when your nose runs like water, will hurt just because of the surface of the tissues. They don't feel rough and they can be depressed easily so screwing them up, or scrunching them into a very tight ball takes little effort, and they will open back up again.
The tissues are not uncomfortable to use but its just when you've been using them for hours on end they stop providing soft comfort. The surface of the tissues is smooth and silky and feel very soft to touch with your finger. Typically each tissue gets about three uses for me before it breaks apart or becomes completely used up.
@ Overall @
These tissues are great value for money and i am pleased with the overall quality. They weren't made for absorbing things. They do get a lot of use out of them and the box design is great, just pull one tissue out at a time, even though it does occasionally get a few more through. The tissues are not too thick but not to thin either. These are top quality tissues and are highly recommended.
Tissues seem to be an essential item for me, I pretty much constantly have the sniffles. I vary what brand I buy depending on what is the best price at the time, unless I am actually ill in which case I am very loyal to my trusted Kleenex Balsam tissues. These Velvet Classic Soft tissues are available from most supermarkets and cost RRP £1.99 per pack (this works out at a cost of £2.49 per 100 sheets).
Product description: "Velvet Classic and beautifully soft.
These Velvet tissues are beautifully soft, luxuriously strong and highly absorbent, giving your skin the velvety comfort it deserves."
Each box contains 80 x 3-ply tissues and the sheet size is 200mm x 210mm. This is a very useful size, not too big and bulky and not too small. The 3-ply makes a sturdy tissue which is strong and does not tear easily. The fibres of the paper do seem to be very soft and this reduces irritation when using to blow my nose. I have found that my skin has not suffered at all when I have used these tissues and they are soft enough to use on the face and body.
The tissues come packed in a standard sort of rectangular cardboard box, with a pop out section on the top for removing the tissues. The one and only problem I have with these tissues is that the way that they are packed into the box makes it impossible to remove just one individual tissue. They seem to be slightly joined together at the edges where the sheets are plied together, and this means that the tissues cling to each other. When I reach in to pull out a tissue they all cling together and I usually end up grabbing about 3 at a time! I then have to waste my time fiddling about and pulling the tissues apart from each other and then stuff them mesily back into the top of the box.
A nice little feature of the packaging is that it comes in a range of colours, including red blue and purple. This is a bit of a novelty factor and not very important, but it's nice to be able to choose! :) I bought the red packet to match in with the colour scheme in my living room, which is red and cream.
Velvet are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) which means their materials are obtained from well-managed forests and other controlled sources. The label on the box states that the paper used is an FSC mixed paper from responsible sources. Good for the environment and good for your conscience!
These tissues are also good for wiping up small spills and cleaning up around the house as they are strong enough to hold up to small amount of liquids. These tissues are a really useful household staple and are good for all sorts of practical tasks. They are of a good quality and I would happily buy them again if the price is right!
Velvet Classic Tissues
Tissues are something which we always have around the house, for either winter colds or summer hay fever. Unfortunately not all tissues are created equal and although there is a place for cheaper tissues, personally I really do prefer to spend a little extra and get something that is both kind to my skin and won't just fall apart. I wouldn't say that I am particularly loyal to any one specific brand of tissues above any others, but I do return time and time again to buying these Velvet Classic tissues and although they aren't quite as soft as velvet they really are a nice quality tissue.
Probably the main reason that I continue to go back time and time again to buy these tissues is because they feel very luxurious, and soft as well as still being strong. I can give these tissues a good tug and unless you have already made a small tear they really do stand up well (or as well as you would want from a quality tissue). The tissues are 3 ply, which also means that as well as being a substantial tissue they won't fall apart all that easily when damp, so you can relax and blow your nose worry free. In each box there are approximately 80 individual tissues and it really depends on colds and hay fever symptoms depending on how long a box of these last. On average, they will last much longer than a cheaper box of tissues because you can reuse each tissue a few times before throwing it away. The tissues are generous in proportion and average 20 cm x 21 cms making these a rather large square(ish) tissue again something that I personally prefer.
Unfortunately my husband suffers from quite bad hay fever and I always think that it's bad enough that his nose is already irritated without having the added irritant of using a rough tissue. These Velvet classic tissues are really soft and although they don't have a balm coating they still are very kind to your skin.
If I was being overly picky and I did come up with a complaint it would be that I feel there is a bit of extra packaging than is really required. Whenever I open the box I always feel that it is actually a bit bigger than necessary to adequately hold the tissues. The packaging does look nice but nothing out of the ordinary for brand tissues and opening the tear away hole is usually not a problem. However, I have on occasion had to use scissors just to tidy it up as I do leave these out and on my living room side table for easy use.
These tissues are widely available and I have seen them to buy in most supermarkets although I tend to always pick mine up from Tesco. These tissues are probably middle of the range price wise, usually retailing for around £1.50 - £2. However, whenever these are on special offer I tend to stock up on them because I know that personally these are a product that I go back to time and time again.
These really are nice tissues to use and I love the larger size of them as well as the thickness. Therefore, from me these really do earn the full five out of five stars. I would happily recommend these tissues to anyone and you do get a nice quality product for your money. Personally for me I would rather pay a little more to get a tissue that doesn't fall apart easily and really is soft and gentle on your skin.
Just as a side note while doing a bit of research for this review I learned that Velvet plant 3 trees for every tree that they use in production of the tissues. This in itself has really made me appreciate the company a bit more and really guarantees that in the future I will definitely be a repeat customer.
There was a time, not so long ago, when no one would have considered paying a couple of pounds for a box of paper hankies that would be used up and thrown away in a couple of days if you're lucky. No, almost everyone would have a cotton, or possibly linen, handkerchief which would go in the boil wash once a week by which time it would be stiff and discoloured with sn*t. At least that is how it was when I was a child (No, not in the nineteenth century; I'm talking about the 1960s or early 1970s).
Nowadays of course all that has changed and the supermarket shelves are packed with a bewildering variety of more and more exotic paper hankies, some costing as much as a couple of litres of petrol. And they're not all called Kleenex either. Which is why I was interested when I saw my local Co-op had the range of Classic Velvet tissues at half price. All the more interested since I already had a couple of 50p off coupons for these tissues. Net cost to me at the till 51p a box, compared to the full price of £2.01. And inside the lid of each box was another 50p coupon! So I was able to repeat my purchase and stock up.
As boxes of tissues go, these are reasonably attractive. The main box colour is white but overlaid with swirly floral patterns in either pink, blue or purple with blue butterflies depicted flying among the flowers. The main label reads "Classic... (Velvet softsoftsoft) ...and Beautifully Soft" so I think the message is clear that these are a "classic" paper hankie and exceptionally soft. The classic part probably refers to the fact that the tissues are plain white - whatever colour the box is the tissues are white - and not impregnated with any lotions or balsams. There is also a green label printed on the box which the message "for every tree we use we replant 3". This presumably indicates eco-awareness on the part of the manufactures, SCA Hygiene Products. Of course, the three that are replanted will take some years to grow to maturity - and not all may survive - but as a strategy it sounds reasonable.
To open it you tear off an oval insert on the top of the box (provided with a thoughtful thumb hole) and, if you're lucky, this will have a 50p coupon printed on the back. The next barrier is a plastic film with the words Velvet and softsoftsoft on it. Pressing this it will split along a central perforation to release the tissues within. At last your mucus can meet its match.
The tissues are three-ply and to my touch and feel pleasantly soft. Of course there is no scent. Absorbency seems good and can contain the usual effects of blowing one's nose or sneezing without tearing or rupturing, the three plies hold together and don't separate easily, while the surface of the tissue has a finely stippled appearance. Three sizes are available, standard (200mm x 210mm) which comes in a box of 80; large (275mm x 225mm) in boxes of 50; dressing-table size - a smaller cube-shaped box of 50. All are the same price, in the Co-op at least, so it's a question of which one suits you best.
I happen to prefer these to the Kleenex Balsam tissues my wife normally buys. For softness and strength there's really nothing in it. It's just a question of whether you like or need a balsam pre-applied to your tissues. Plain tissues have the advantage that they can also be used to wipe your eyes or mouth and are safe for sensitive skins. If you need a balsam then a drop of Olbas oil works well I find. It also comes down to price and the offer available at the time.
At the price I paid the only other option would be a "value" tissue, which I have also tried. However they are only two-ply so tear easily, feel rough to the touch and are smaller too. Acceptable in an emergency only I would say.
The cardboard box is recyclable as is the plastic film (made from LDPE by the looks of it). For the small amount of film it may not be worth the effort of separating it though. The paper used is from renewable resources and the box carries a FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certificate. SCA clearly want to give the message that they are being environmentally responsible, even though paper making is inherently damaging to the environment through its use of resources (trees and huge amounts of water mainly) and the harmful chemicals employed.
I always have tissues sitting around the house because I'm a bit of a sneezer, I have allergies and often have bouts of "serial sneezing" where I can sneeze for 20 times or more in a row. The tissues I buy always have to be fairly soft and I tend to go for quality brands on this kind of item. Whilst strolling around Morrisons a couple of weeks ago looking for some decent tissues I spotted these Velvet Classic tissues on offer, 2 boxes for £3 wasn't a bad deal so I bought a couple of boxes.
These tissues are made by the same people who make the Velvet toilet rolls and at the moment don't seem to be widely available but I'm hoping that will change.
Each box is decorated with pastel swirls, butterflies, petals and leaves and both pink and purple boxes were available when I bought mine. The contents are identical for each box though and the design of the box is just to make them look appealing. They do too!
Each box contains about 80 tissues and each tissue is 200mm x 210mm so plenty of tissue for a nose. They are apparently 3 ply but these tissues are so nice you can't get the 3 ply sections to come apart, I thought they were just one super thick ply because of this. I don't really like tissues that fall apart, they don't look like good quality and often aren't very soft or absorbent. The tissues are just a plain white and have a slightly dimpled effect.
So what did I think? I think these are the best tissues I've bought and used in decades! They are super soft, thick and absorbent and feel so luxurious I'm completely hooked on them. The box is attractive enough to place anywhere in your house and the contents are far superior to any other brand on the market I've used. I have sensitive skin and these tissues don't rub it or make it red even when I have to use several throughout the day. For removing make up these tissues are thick enough to cope with it without any holes appearing or bits flaking off. To say I'm impressed with these is an understatement!
My partner often grabs a tissue to clean his glasses with and he commented on how thick and soft these are, they're more like a cloth than a tissue. They are more than up to the job of cleaning glasses and a couple of times we've had some minor spills in the living room and I've grabbed a tissue rather than go to the kitchen for kitchen roll and they've coped with that perfectly well too.
Overall I'm astounded at how good these tissues are and when you sneeze as much as I do it's really important to have good quality tissues. I'm completely hooked and just know I'll be buying these again and again as long as they're available. I highly recommend these to anyone and everyone, they're super soft and thick and absolutely brilliant! Keep your eyes open for them.
